About this project
Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance is a pen & paper tabletop RPG set in a detailed fantasy world at the birth of its steampunk era. The setting combines classic Tolkien fantasy with Renaissance ideals of art, philosophy, and invention and all the great new technology that the power of steam has unlocked.
The Core Rulebook for Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance released last year to great reviews and steady sales through an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign. We wanted to dive back into the world of Edara and offer the world that we have built to a wider audience, and so we bring you...
What is the Traveler's Guide to Edara?
This book is a fully featured campaign supplement for the Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance corebook, that can be used to design and run your own campaigns within Edara. Gain access to a list of important characters, detailed maps, and engaging story arcs. Learn about the governments, economics, military forces, and politics that govern Edara. And all of this presented in the style of a traveler's guide.
The Traveler's Guide is a full-color, fully illustrated, beautifully designed 8.5 x 11 follow up to the successful Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance fantasy adventure RPG. We received great praise for the illustrations and design of the Edara core book and we intend to deliver that same quality in this campaign guide. The book is set to release this November, but if we can get it done in time for Gen Con 2015, we will be able to release it at the convention!
The world of Edara is full of adventure.
Five nations rule the land and jockey for political power and economic influence, while the noble houses play their Machiavellian games in the background.
Orcs and Ogres clash in endless honor duels while protecting their lands from the tunneling Dwarves and burrowing Goblins that live inside the mountains.
Science battles religion in an attempt to better understand the world while diplomats and philosophers attempt to sooth the racial tensions left over from the Great War.
The Traveler's Guide takes you on a detailed tour through the five kingdoms of Edara, and offers full statistics, history, important landmarks and NPCs, full size maps, and campaign plot hooks for each one. It also includes new backgrounds, traits, and diverse racial options to better reflect the region in which your character grew up.
The Kingdom of Kuria: A feudal kingdom closed off from the rest of the world. A place where humans will thrive, but where other races are looked at with mistrust and hate. It is the center for renaissance study and scientific achievement, with many colleges and factories, and the first working steam trains. But beware the schemes of the royal families, as their machinations often lead their pawns to tragedy.
The Dwarven Holds: Underground cities steeped in tradition and highly organized into an efficient caste system. The Dwarven Holds are home to cutting edge feats of engineering and craftsman ship, but the Dwarves have tunneled far too deep, and many unfriendly things wait in the darkness.
The Flamma Mountains: These towering peaks offer shelter to the nomadic Orc and Ogre war camps but between the never ending clan wars and the dragons that are said to live atop the peaks, the Flamma Mountains can be a deadly place for outsiders.
The Sylvan Forest: Said to be a sea of endless green, this forest is home to the Elves, who act as shepherds for the abundant wildlife that live beside them. But not all of the forests' beasts are friendly, and not all of its vistas are placid.
The Free Cities: A collection of self-governed cities bordering on lawless. They are hubs of travel and trade but the only laws are made by the ones with the fastest hands and accurate revolvers.
The Traveler's Guide to Edara is meant to be paired with the Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance Core Rulebook. It plays off of the information presented in the core book and offers some new mechanics and character creation options.
However, when all is said and done, this book is a RPG setting. It contains historical write-ups, campaign plot hooks, detailed NPCs and locations, maps, and story content that can be used with any RPG system. There are also GM tips for bringing the world of Edara to your favorite system, including adapting the unique 'Bands' that drive Edara's character creation and bringing those disciplines to the core classes that belong to other systems. Experience the conflict of science vs religion and steampunk vs renaissance, to Fate, Savage Worlds, or any system you can think of!
A large part of what makes these regions of Edara unique are the struggles and challenges that adventurers will find in them. The Traveler's Guide to Edara will offer expansive adventure hooks, complete with tailored dungeon building tips and even more adversaries!
We included many Adversaries in the Edara Corebook, but the Traveler's guide allows us to bring in even more, divided up by region and terrain. And with our built-in leveling guide, it is easy for the GM to adjust these challenges to the party's level.
You may wonder why we are bringing this project to Kickstarter instead of funding it ourselves. The reason is because every bit of money that the Edara corebook has brought in has gone back into the company. Costs for conventions and advertising and producing the Adventure Modules make it unfeasible for us to fund this book ourselves.
We could still produce it, and sell it as an artless black and white PDF, but we feel the fans deserve more. You deserve rich, colorful artwork to really bring the book to life. You deserve a detailed layout, like what we put forth with the corebook. And you deserve a finely tuned, fully edited, well produced book. And that is what we are going to bring you.
Here is a breakdown of our projected costs
Artwork: $3,000 +
Graphic Design and Layout: $1,000
Basically everything we make above our goal is going to be used to bring in even more artwork. We find nothing more exciting than a fully illustrated campaign guide.
Our goal is to thoroughly explore the world of Edara and bring players in direct contact with the richness of the world. What better way to showcase the rich culture of Edara than with short stories written by some of the finest talent in the industry. Each story will dive into the day-to-day life of characters in Edara, from the Kurian politicians to the Sylvan tribesman. By bringing in such incredible talent, we can get five different points of view, with each writer bringing his or her unique style to the world of Edara.
Stay Tuned for more stretch goals! Once we smash these goals, we will announce our next set, including conversion books for some of the more popular game systems out there!
Carl Harrison - Lead Developer & Co-Designer
Carl Harrison is the Lead Designer for Edara: A Steampunk Renaissance, and the entire game grew from his idea to build on a Tolkienesque fantasy campaign world that he developed over several games and came to really love. His education as a Latin and Classical Cultures major has come in handy in fleshing out the cultures of the world. When not working on Edara, Carl is a Lead Q&A Tester for Firaxis games, and spends way too much time playing Civilization.
Ryan Schoon - Lead Writer & Co-Designer
Ryan is the lead writer for Caelestis Designs and the Traveler's Guide to Edara. Aside from the work done on the Edara line, Ryan has also written for many hit RPGs, including Apocalypse Prevention, Inc 2nd Edition and Fragged Empire, as well as the upcoming card game Strife. He is also part of the Independent Game Developers Network, a collective group that works together to bring a wider focus onto indie games like this one.
In addition to the Traveler's Guide, Ryan's next big releases are The Faces of Thedas companion for the Dragon Age RPG by Green Ronin and the next set of Episodic Adventures for Edara. You can find him on Twitter @LoreMasterRyan
John Adamus - Editior
John Adamus acted as editor on many ENnie award-winning roleplaying games, from Marvel Heroic Roleplaying to Fate Core Worlds in Fire & Shadow. He's worked on over a dozen Kickstarter-funded role-playing games. He's available on Twitter at @awesome_john.
The Writer Next Door - Editor
We have several podcast interviews and video reviews lined up for Edara this next month! Keep checking back as we update this section each time a new review is posted!
Check us out on the Adventures from the Shed podcast, where they had a blast playing in the Edara setting!

Risks and challenges
As we learned with our first Kickstarter campaign, delays are always a huge risk. When producing our first batch of books, we ran into issues with the print review taking longer than anticipated, and issues with the files not updating correctly resulting in multiple PDF versions needing to be released. However, we learned a lot from those issues and have experience now with formatting books and meeting deadlines. We don't foresee any delays on this project, as long as the artwork all comes in on time and the editing meets its deadline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
