The story of Dale Karger: One of those days you can only dream of

The Dogfight Elite team has been sending emails to every veteran group and museum we could think of, with the help of the community. We try to explain that the main objective of Dogfight Elite is to be a historical and educational game, that should put real life stories of veterans and squadrons, no matter how small and unknown, into the spotlight. But nothing prepared us for this response, no matter how much we try to explain it and remain cool, this email was heartfelt by the whole team.

Email from Dale Karger

hello Joaquin,

i have been doing a lot of thinking lately about life. actually that is because someone sent me a video of am interview my father made 5 years ago. ok, here's a deal for you. i will up my pledge to $1000.....if instead of painting a plane only i alone can fly, you paint the one of the games default P51Ds like one of my father's planes. he was in the 357th FG 364th Sq. at 19 years old he became the 3rd youngest american ace and the youngest ace to survive the war. not only was he an ace but one of the few to also shoot down an me 262 jet. he had 3 different paint schemes but they all bore the name Cathy Mae.... which was his sweetheart at the time and became my mother years later. i know it isnt the most macho or flashy name but it is a way to honor both my parents and contribute to a great game. actually i think you ought to make the default planes painted in something historic and include a history of the plane and the paint scheme....but that part is entirely up to you. i would just like one of the Cathy Mae's to be featured in DFE. i can supply you with photos....artist renditions.....and Jpegs of skins someone made up for me to use on IL2. what do you say???

oh...i got an email back from the redtail.org ... they passed my email to their corporate to see if they may be interested in backing you with a donation. their corp is the CAF which restores and flys ww2 warbirds...hope they throw some $$$ your way.

 regards

dale

Dale, this pledge meant the world to us. Cathy Mae will be THE default paint for P51d, we can't think of anything more macho or flashy than honoring your parents. We are anxiously waiting for those pics!

Very touching story and an honor to be able to read it.

Dale is on a trip this weekend, I'm sure he will reply when he comes back. We are already working on the system to allow you to choose your plane paintings (Cathy Mae being he default for the P51d!) and adding the history of each painting before selecting them.

Btw, someone on the forum was quick to find life pictures of Dale Karger with Cathy Mae colors:
