Last year I was delighted to release Mutable and even more thrilled when it was chosen as #10 Album of the Year by A Closer Listen and also honoured by inclusion in Headphone Commute's best of 2018 lists. Following on from that I'm delighted to present Formic Syntax.
A New Project
Once again I wish to be able to share the experience of this release with you in the best ways possible, and by raising funds here and now, it will allow me to cover some of the costs I've already incurred (the album has already been mastered by the ever excellent Rafael Anton Irisarri), and the costs which are still to come.
Between vinyl pressing, CD production, and the mastering work already done, I expect costs to easily reach €2,000. I'm hoping to raise at least €800 so that it won't sting quite so much!
What's on offer?
A whole selection of great things!
- Ecopack CD with booklet/insert (design isn't finalised just yet)
- 140g Vinyl with beautiful cover art and free art print inside
- High quality limited-edition matt 24x21cm prints of the artwork on 170gsm paper
- Special support tier package
- The original painting! Oil on 70x60cm canvas - only 1 available!
The tracks on Formic Syntax have a distinctly harder edge than recent releases and much of the album is pulsating with angular sonics and crisp, sharp polyrhythms. As always I have tried to find ways to densely layer the audio spectrum with constantly varying electronics, whilst hopefully maintaining clarity, purpose, and soul.
You can check out sneak previews of the tracks below:
Behind Closed Eyes opens the album with subtle melodic pads, underlying bass drones, fractured field recordings topped off with alien distorted crackles. A Bipolar Retraction draws you out of ambience and into hypnotic chaos (and is quite possibly my favourite piece of the whole release!). Unmeshing Cinematic Realism fragments things even more, just held together by driving beat which is continually close to tripping over itself, and Alcovic Arch reins you back in with a more palatable yet beat driven structure. The album then eases back and into two slow and languid pieces which hark back previous ambient releases whilst, I hope, maintaining a beautiful attention to detail and sculpting of sound. The nine minute closing piece is another favourite of mine, shimmering and effervescent!
The Whole Package
The release is complemented by cover art with which I'm really delighted, and is itself a remix of a unique painting created specially for the release by Polish artist Adrianna Snochowska.
The original is a 70 x 60 cm oil painting on canvas, and a print of the artwork is included with each vinyl copy, and will be reproduced in either a booklet or insert with the CD version. You can also order just a print if you want!
The original painting is shown below and can also be purchased at a 20% discount from its usual price!
You will be helping to support an independent artist who pours a lot of love into each track he makes and works very hard to purchase the best equipment he can afford. With your help I hope to at least break even and continue to provide you with listening pleasure for many years to come!

Thank you for taking the time to check out my project. I hope you like it and that you enjoy the music I'm creating.
Risks and challenges
As with every single vinyl pressing project, the delivery time has to be quite flexible. I'm working with a pressing plant I've worked with before and am hopeful that things should run on time, but if the test pressings have problems or the pressing plant is delayed, well there's nothing I can do to change that!
But I'm hopeful it will all come together without any issues and I can deliver your tasty new record in good time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
