About this project

Hello & Welcome!

Thank you so much for visiting our Kickstarter page (www.eatsplace.com/fund). Our mission is to open EatsPlace, a food and restaurant concept that will have a pop-uppery (dining space to host pop-up restaurants and chef residencies), community commercial kitchen rentals and a marketplace, and we need your help to do it!

We're located in the Park View / Petworth area on Georgia Avenue. Maps by Torrie Partridge of Cherry Blossom Creative. Get yours for a $35 pledge.

EatsPlace's mission is to be an evolving creative enterprise that lives, breathes, and changes according to what’s in season, what chefs are dreaming up and what neighbors crave. We'll be located on Georgia Avenue in the Parkview/Petworth area of Washington DC. We promote good eating, food education and slow food business development through:

(1) Pop-uppery: EatsPlace will be a dedicated dining space that allows guest chefs to have residencies and pop-up their restaurants. EatsPlace will have a new restaurant popping up every month or so, but don't worry your favorites will return for encore performances, or we'll help them open up their own place!

(2) Shared Community Commercial Kitchen: EatsPlace will rent out its fully licensed commercial kitchen to local caterers and food producers to allow them to make and sell their food at food carts, farmers markets, grocery stores and to you.

(3) Marketplace: EatsPlace will stock both food and food-related supplies. You will be able to buy foods prepared in-house, from pickles to pasta to complete prepared meals. Shop here for weekly provisions or daily bread and support local culinary entrepreneurs. Our community kitchen users will be able to sell their products at the EatsPlace marketplace as well. All kinds of foods, sauces, sausages and baked goods are prepared on site and sold under the same roof. It doesn't get any more local than that.

(4) Education: EatsPlace will host events such as cooking classes, tasting  courses, skill-share workshops and other community activities. We will also offer career-building courses like food law, food packaging 101, and trade show secrets revealed.

Raising money here will show our other investors that the community wants a place to celebrate food. We've got the largest piece of the pie, the property, but we still have to convert the space and build it up and out. Your much appreciated contribution will help us build out and purchase equipment for production, including prep tables, a food processor, a mixer, a fryer and ranges for culinary roamings, and shelving and walk-in cooling to store everybody's delicious creations, as well as purchase initial supplies and ingredients.

Every little bit helps, and if you don't feel able to, please share this project with anyone you think would be interested. Link to this page at www.eatsplace.com/fund -- EatsPlace and countless food producers and eaters THANK YOU!

Funding is All-or-Nothing:  You won't be charged unless we reach our goal -- Kickstarter uses an all-or-nothing funding model. That means that the pledges are only redeemable if we meet or surpass the goal of $25,000. We can always zoom past and exceed that amount, but if  we don't meet our funding goal, EatsPlace gets nothing.

About Me:
I'm a native Washingtonian who grew up in the kitchen of my father's restaurant. I've been a bartender, barista and cheesemonger (a poet, a pawn and a lawyer...that's life).  In 2011 I started Artisanal Soy, a small batch kimchee company that won the prestigious Good Food Awards.  I'm thrilled to open a place that will bring more food to more people. I am so grateful to have this opportunity, and look forward to moving into our new home -- EatsPlace!

Risks and challenges

The bulk of the challenge has been met ... we have secured a great building in a great location on Georgia Avenue, 2 blocks from the Petworth metro. But a community project without risk is not worth pursuing, and although the concept has been very successful in other cities, EatsPlace will be the first food incubator and dedicated pop-uppery in Washington DC. We have an experienced management team and rock-solid advisory board, but there is a risk of not having community support but that's why we're launching Kickstarter...to spread the word and prove DC needs and wants this!
