If you walk along a Croatian city street today, you’ll surely see a pair of „Startas“.
"Startas" sneakers were born in the Croatian city of Vukovar in 1976, originally designed by Borovo d.d. for ping-pong players.
These soft, low-heeled shoes with a rubber sole, made completely out of natural materials, quickly became iconic in the sports world, as well as a fashion must-have in the former republic of Yugoslavia.
A huge production boom was soon stopped by the terrible conflicts that hit the Balkans in the early 90’s. The Borovo company closed its doors from 1991 to 1998, due to consequences suffered during the bombing of Vukovar.
In 1998, the company slowly restarted its production, but remained in the shadows up until a few years ago.
In 2013, after 5 years spent rethinking the brand and adding some contemporary spice to it, the "Startas" sneaker once again became an omnipresent fashion detail on the streets of Croatia.
Still manufactured in the same place they started out in and with the same 40-year-old technique, cut and sewn by hand, each pair of the "Startas" represent an authentic story of Croatian history and culture.
Our crowdfunding project is related to EASA (European Architecture Students’ Assembly).
EASA is a student run network which was started in Liverpool in 1981. Each year, EASA manifests itself through the summer assembly, gathering over 600 architecture students and young architects from Europe. It is the largest student event in the architectural field, revolving around a two-week intensive programme of workshops, lectures, discussions, excursions… EASA is the leading international network in the field of non-academic education.
The 38th edition of EASA will take place from 21st of July till 4th of August, in the Croatian city of Rijeka, under the name of RE:EASA. RE:EASA concerns itself with the human activities connected to the prefix ‘re’, and all phenomena associated with it– rethinking, reusing, recycling, reinventing… RE: EASA wishes to be a framework platform for young European architects to come and work together for the betterment of the entire EASA and European architecture community.
We recognized Borovo as a company representing all the values for which the RE: in RE:EASA stands for, with the "Startas" sneaker being a symbol of the power of rethinking and reinventing a classic and iconic item.
A collaboration started. We decided to design our own- "RE:" version of the well known "Startas" sneaker, while the Borovo company agreed to produce them for us.
The "RE:Startas" sneaker is an original product, designed especially for the RE:EASA assembly.
Its purpose is to give the participants a valuable material product to take away from the experience of the assembly, one they will not throw away, but keep using and reusing in everyday life back at home.
It is a simple monochromatic sneaker, with a pop of the RE:EASA orange on its sole and shoelaces.
We decided to implement only a simple "RE:" on one of the sneakers, for the users to add their own ideas on it upon receiving them.
If your pledge reaches €60 or more, each of your two pairs of sneakers will be accompanied by both orange and gray laces.
Our goal is to sell 200 pairs of the "RE:Startas" sneakers, which will kick off their production in the Borovo factory in Vukovar.
If you want to pick up your pair of RE:Startas on RE:EASA, please select Croatia as delivery country.
For those who will not be participating in the assembly, your sneakers will be shipped to you and standard post fees will be charged (European Union countries €15, €30 for the rest of the world, free if you are picking them up in Croatia).
It is our goal to finish and ship our first order (until July 1st) by the beginning of August. If there will be more interest, the second order (until August 4th) will be finished and shipped at the beginning of September.
Our "RE:Startas" shoes are unisex and they come in standard European sizes from 36 to 46. If you are in between numbers, we recommend taking one size bigger.
Don't worry, there is no need to pick your size now, because we will ask you to specify it after the campaign ends!

Risks and challenges
We know it’s hard to believe, but there are no risks in this project.
We purposely decided to work with a renowned Croatian shoe factory, which means that professionals will hand make each pair of our "RE:Startas" canvas sneakers.
We need 200 pairs of shoes to start the production.
The only possible problem we could have is not collecting 200 pairs by 1st of July, meaning you won’t be able to enjoy your shoes during RE:EASA assembly, but you would get them shipped home in August or September.
