About

Ears On is a non-profit organization geared towards connecting previously used, recycled hearing aids with children (0-18 years in age) in need of a hearing aid via a network of local Columbus providers. Currently, there is no marketplace that exclusively deals in the handling of recycling and refurbishing of pediatric hearing aids. Based on the personal experience of the co-founders of Ears On, we understand the financial burden of purchasing hearing aids not covered by insurance companies. 70% of private healthcare insurance does not cover the cost of hearing aids, even for children.

In support of children getting their hearing aids, we’d like to move into a model of EarsOn.Org becoming a publisher of children’s picture books that will give children the tools and talking points they need to address questions about their hearing aids. This book can be used in the classroom by the teacher or between a parent and child. They can be purchased by parents, pediatric audiology centers, doctor’s offices, schools, and hearing aid loaner banks.

We have conducted surveys and interviews with parents and audiology centers to confirm their is a need for a book like this.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge is the financial backing for our project. We have filed for our 501c3 status so we can apply for grants, but we'd like to move forward with creating the book. We already have illustrators that have bid on the project, and we have experience in the children's book market space. Ears On has participated and won a social enterprise contest and is participating in a 2nd one in hopes of gathering more funding for our non-profit and our vision.
