Thank you for taking interest in our project!
We are Early Spirit, and we're building the best Canadian folk music debut of 2018. It's called Unrelated because, at each of our 100+ performances per year, someone asks us if we are a family band. None of us are related! But we're on a mission to bring more great music into your life, and your support is crucial to making it happen.
Early Spirit is Ben Kelly (drums), Gabriel Dubreuil (violin), Jay Knutson (guitar and lead vocal), and Will Ross (bass). We all love hanging out together and growing our musical family: nobody's leaving this lineup! Here's a bit more about us.
Gabriel returned to Vancouver after completing a degree at the Berklee College of Music in 2016 and formed a trio with Jay, and Will right away. On a shoestring budget, they performed at festivals and self-produced a debut album.
The trio leveled up to a band when Ben joined in 2017. His energy made the difference in starting to hone the band's sound. We clicked immediately because, over 15 years, Jay had taught and mentored Will, Gabriel, and Ben in the North Shore Celtic Ensemble. And yes, Jay cycles through their names when trying to get the attention of one: “Ben…Will…Gabriel?”
Musically, we're diverse. Jay has a rich performance history with iconic Canadian acts including Connie Kaldor, Hart Rouge, and Spirit of the West; he is a talented songwriter whose lyrics and guitar playing are the driving force of Early Spirit. Gabriel combines traditional Celtic and Quebecois fiddling, world music, and jazz into his instrumental compositions. Ben’s approach to folk drumming is quirky and melodic, giving the band its charm. Will plays a monster bass line and even doubles Gabriel's melodies during big moments.
This Kickstarter campaign allows us to release a full-length album featuring songs and instrumentals. In March, we recorded the first four tracks at Vancouver's Monarch Studios. We will record the remaining tracks in June, working with sound engineer James Stephens in Ottawa. Our team also includes producer Leonard Podolak (The Duhks, producer for Ten Strings and a Goat Skin) and post-production expert Mark Busic (Genticorum, le Vent du Nord). We feature several guest musicians on “Unrelated” including Michelle Campagne (Hart Rouge) and more to be announced.
Pre-orders will be fulfilled by late September, and the release concert in Vancouver will be held at the Rogue Folk Club on Friday, November 9th.
The album will cost $16,000 CAD to produce from start to finish. We are asking for your support to help us raise one-quarter of the total: $4,000 CAD. This amount helps to cover our studio costs, post-production, and CD printing.
We are covering the remaining expenses by performing throughout the summer and fall!
Any additional funds that are raised will be used for publicity and marketing so that we ensure our music is heard and reaches the widest audience possible.
