You, the game designer, need three basic things in order to make a successful game. First, you need a good idea for a thought-provoking game with an interesting and engaging theme. Second, you need the resources to translate that idea into a workable, playable prototype. And third, you need a publisher to deliver the fruit of your ideas and hard work to gamers everywhere. With these needs in mind, we created the Game Designer's Toolkit.
The most obvious use of the Toolkit is as a source of materials. The base Toolkit contains 35 different types of pieces. With the premium tool kit, you'll get 51 different types of components in a rainbow of colors. Many of these pieces are things that cannot be gotten anywhere else, and certainly not at a better price.
A less obvious but equally noteworthy use of the Game Designer's Toolkit is as a source of ideas. Instead of only including blank markers, standard dice, white cards, and a gray game board, nearly all the pieces in the toolkit are detailed. All it takes is a scribbled note to indicate that the horses you are using are actually taking the place of alien invaders in your game, but what if the mobsters and dragons included spark a unique and fun idea that would have never occurred if you were just staring at cubes and disks? Regarding the creative possibilities you get with the Game Designers Toolkit, Fantastiqa designer Alf Seegert has this to say:
"It’s perfectly feasible to go through [the Game Designer's Toolkit] and go, “Oh good, now I have some tanks for my war game” or “Ah, more cubes. Handy!” But it might offer something even richer than that. What if you used this box to challenge yourself to a metagame of game creation itself? Mix up all the pieces, grab a handful, and see what weird worlds, what dreamy themes, what mad mechanics might emerge from the limits offered by serendipity."
There will be things in the toolbox that you will need to relabel, alter, or notate as something else entirely. But if one of these pieces ends up giving you an idea that would have otherwise gone unthought, we think that's worth more than some nondescript cubes that can be purchased for cents on the dollar in any hobby store.
Finally, there's the question of publishing. How does a box of pieces help you infiltrate that shadowy world of game publishers? Simply put, we at Eagle and Gryphon games are interested in seeing how you use the pieces we have provided! We are going to look at every submission that comes our way from Toolkit backers, searching for those games that rise above the rest to take a place beside over 100 other Eagle and Gryphon titles.
If the above reasons still leave you cold, our very own Dale Tolley, designer of the upcoming Cheesenomics, has 9 more reasons for you to check out the Game Designer's Toolkit!

Encouraging, fostering, and sponsoring creativity. That's what we think Kickstarter is all about. And it is certainly what we think Eagle Games and Gryphon Games are all about as well. If you looked closely at the inventory above, you'll notice just about everything we're offering comes from one of our existing games. As a publisher that has been in business for over 13 years, we have accumulated surplus parts here and there. When we looked at all these things together, we recognized that there was a real opportunity to make something special out of it all. Instead of continuing to store these parts in our warehouse, why not deeply discount them, add some items to make the whole package more cohesive, and get that package to people who have a use for it? We know you have the ideas to make great things, and we have the components to get you there.
So please, let those creative juices flow and let's publish some great new creative games together.
Stretch goals are our way of saying "thank you" to our supporters and encouraging you to get your friends on board! For this project, every stretch goal will contain both additional parts and unlock more of the Game Designer's Handbook, a compilation of essays written specifically for backers of the Game Designer's Toolkit. All of the essays are written by designers of one or more fantastic Eagle or Gryphon games. The first essay, by Dale Tolley of Cheesenomics, can be found here. When we reach our funding goal of $3000, we will also include the second essay by Tom Lehmann (Race for the Galaxy, Roll Through the Ages: Iron Age). Tom takes us through his unboxing of the Game Designer's Toolkit, with commentary on the uses he finds for the various components.Once complete, the Game Designer's Handbook will cover a range of topics, from the general use of having a toolkit, to how to generate ideas, to how to effectively approach publishers.
All the stretch goals that are unlocked will be sent to every backer who has pledged $41 or more (that's equivalent to a War-Starter's Toolkit plus shipping to a business address).
Stretch Goal #1 - $6,000 - UNLOCKED!
We raised $6,000, so we will include four more runners of horses (2 black, 2 brown). Also included is Essay #3, the second installment by Dale Tolley (the guy loves us, what can we say?). It is full of useful tips on how to get the most mileage out of your Toolkit. Dale goes over easy methods of converting pieces to the purpose you need them for, whatever the challenge. We're also including essay #4 by Railways of North America designer Rick Holzgrafe. Rick's essay is full of useful information about how to create prototypes with your Game Designer's Toolkit.
Stretch Goal #2 - $10,000 - UNLOCKED!
At the $10,000 pledge level, we will include a Sapphire Dragon in every Toolkit. Essays #5 and #6 are by Alf Seegert of Fantastiqa and Josh Raab of Nika. These essays focus on how to use your Game Designer's Toolkit as an effective tool for generating game ideas. Both Alf and Josh talk about the benefits of letting the components take the lead when pondering new game ideas.
Stretch Goal #3 - $15,000
At the $15,000 pledge level, we will include an entire second set of miniatures (that's 4 runners) from American Civil War. Our final essay is also included in this stretch goal. Matt Riddle, co-designer of Fleet, writes about how to create an effective prototype to attract publishers to your game.
Add-ons are available to you when you have made at least a $5 pledge to this Kickstarter project. You simply use the "Manage Your Pledge" button and add the required add-on amount (below) to your pledge depending upon what you want to add. 2-3 weeks after this Kickstarter project ends, you will get a survey from us asking for your address and for a summary of your add-ons so that we can match that summary to your pledge and get you exactly what you paid for when the items are ready to ship. Please write a message to us if you have further questions about add-ons.
Important: If you plan to request more than 2 copies of an add-on, please let us know beforehand so that we can ensure sufficient stock exists.

The Pacifist's Booster Pack
Many people have been asking how we can add more 'oomph' to their Euro needs. The Pacifist's Booster Pack is the answer to that call for peaceful pieces. Whether you're late to the party and missing the goodies the early-comers got, or if you're just plain piece crazy, the Pacifist's Booster pack is for you!
Because we need to manufacture these parts fresh for this Kickstarter, the Booster Pack will not ship with other Game Designer Toolkit pledge levels or add-ons. We will send you your toolkit and then this package will follow in June or July.
To get your Booster Pack, you must first either make a pledge for at least $41 (the War-Starter's Toolkit plus shipping to a business address) or have an existing pledge of at least $41. Then all you do is add $33 to your pledge ($25 for the pieces and $8 for shipping). In return you will receive:
1) 100 plastic coins from Age of Empires 3 (50 gold and 50 silver)
2) 80 natural wood 10mm cubes
3) 60 painted wood 10mm cubes (20 each in red, and white and blue)
4) 60 Fantastiqa gems in 6 different colors
5) 24 ROTW markers (6 each of hotels, crossings, fuel depots and water tanks in 4 different colors)
6) 6 brown Francis Drake frigates
7) 20 white 16mm D6 dice
Important Note for International Backers: Shipping just the Booster Pack internationally is prohibitively expensive. For international backers interested in the Booster Pack, we will need to hold the whole Toolkit until it can all be shipped together. Additional shipping fees may need to be added. Please send us a message if you are interested and we can work out the details.
Do you have any requests?
Our goal in this project is to empower designers, not pigeon-hole them. If something you're itching for isn't available, let us know through messages or comments. We are not going to make changes to what is in the basic toolkits (except through stretch goals, of course), but we will introduce extra add-on options where we can.

When designing this project, we had a long discussion about whether we wanted to include shipping in the pledge levels, or if we wanted to add a shipping surcharge. So many Kickstarters now feature "free shipping" that it's easy to forget how much of the pledge amount is actually being charged just to cover the expense of getting your product to you. I personally like to know what part of my money is going where. In recognition of this, we've decided to keep shipping a separate charge. Below is a chart of how much you will need to add to your pledge to cover shipping:
US Residential Address (houses, condos, apartments): $13
US Business Address (locations not listed above): $11
Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Denmark, Finland, France, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Italy, or Sweden: $55
UK, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore: $60
New Zealand, Poland, Ukraine: $65
The high cost of shipping internationally is an unfortunate part of shipping single units. If you are located internationally and are interested in starting or joining a shipping pool with other backers in your country, please send us a message.
Happy Designing Everyone!
Risks and challenges
The entire Game Designer's Toolkit will be assembled in our Kentucky warehouse, and we will ensure the utmost accuracy and care. However, we do occasionally make mistakes. When mistakes do occur, our customer service department will work with you to take care of any problems that might arise. Please contact us with regard to any such issues within 30 days of receiving your copy of the toolkit.
Shipping issue are rare, but they do sometimes occur, especially when shipping to destinations outside of the US. We will obtain tracking information when it is possible, but sometimes it is not. We cannot guarantee that there will not be shipping problems, as we cannot guarantee the service and reliability of the various postal/delivery services involved around the world. You will have to assume that risk along with us.
Eagle and Gryphon Games has completed and delivered on over 20 Kickstarter projects to date, with 6 more currently either still being Kickstarted or in production. We deliver on our promises reliably and usually on time (the few delays we have had were related to production issues, and even then we have never been more than 45 days late). Putting it simply, you will get everything you are promised when you pledge to one of our Kickstarter projects, and it will be delivered to you in as timely a manner as possible.
