Lisboa is a game about the reconstruction of the great Portuguese capital city after a series of terrible catastrophes. On November 1, 1755, Lisboa suffered an earthquake of an estimated magnitude of 8.5–9.0, followed by a devastating tsunami and 3 days of raging fires. The city was almost totally destroyed.
The Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, was then the minister of foreign affairs. The King put him in charge of the reconstruction of Lisboa. The Marquis gathered a team of engineers and architects to aid him in this reconstruction.
Lisboa is thus played, in part, on a representational map of the city. During the planning of the downtown re-building project, the type of businesses permitted in each street was pre-determined. The clockmakers and goldsmiths had their street; as did the bookstores and libraries; the tailors and silk vendors; and the toolmakers as well. This all comes into play on the Lisboa gameboard.
Players represent the nobility of Lisboa who will use their influence in the reconstruction and business development of the new city.
In rebuilding the city, players will make use of the Royal Builder, who works with the architects to build Lisboa anew, while the Marquis will provide aid in the development of commerce. The King will provide players with political help in re-opening the beautiful new city. But the true reason you are rebuilding the city is not for greatness, or even fame or fortune. As a nobleman or noblewoman of Lisboa, your primary motivation is the acquisition of Wigs--a most important trading commodity of the Era, and the means of scoring points in the game.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION
Vital Lacerda is an "Alfacinha"! (One who is from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.) There is no one better qualified to design the best game ever produced about Lisbon than Vital. As you read through this Kickstarter project, we believe you will be impressed with the painstaking details Vital has incorporated into the game, capturing the pivotal historic events that gave rise to the complete rebuilding of Lisbon in the late 18th Century. Thanks for your support and enjoy the game.
*Spot UV Varnish -- This is a special printing technique that applies a clear varnish to specific areas of the board, giving them a slightly raised and glossy appearance. This effect will be applied to all of the important iconography on the board, further facilitating clarity during game play.
**Specially-designed player board -- This adds a multi-level player board that features pre-cut spaces for components such as cubes and wooden houses, preventing them from moving during play. It also adds “feet” that lift the middle section, allowing players to more easily tuck cards under the board.

AN EXCELLENT REVIEW from CREAKING SHELVES
Please wait until the Survey comes to you just after this KS projects ends to pledge for these add-ons! Actual shipping expense will be added to your pledge for these add-ons after the KS project has ended.
Add-Ons have been the source of a lot of confusion and some "issues" in the past. It is very difficult and expensive for us to coordinate and pay for shipping and stocking goods in four or more locations around the world. As a result, we are offering these Add-Ons only AFTER the KS program ends (via our survey that you will receive within two weeks after this KS ends) AND we are only offering them to US and Canadian Backers for certain.
There will be an additional cost for shipping Add-Ons (matching our costs for shipping, we do not make a profit on shipping!) and you will be advised of those extra shipping costs after you have filled out and returned the survey and worksheet. If the shipping costs prove unacceptable to you, you may cancel your order and you will not be charged anything for Add-ons. If the shipping charges are acceptable, you will pay for the Add-ons via PayPal or wire payment.
For backers in the EU, Australia, Asia and South America, we will provide these Add-Ons on a first come, first served basis. If we do not have the stock needed, we will offer you a FULL refund.

MEET THE DESIGNER
Hello everyone. I am Vital Lacerda, the designer of Lisboa. I was born in Lisbon 49 years ago, a city I adore and still live in with Sandra, my wife, and my two lovely daughters. I have a masters degree in Marketing and Advertising, and after working in advertising agencies for almost 15 years as an art director, I decided to try my luck as a freelance graphic designer. I've been working like this since 2007. At that same time I also began designing board games, my true and great passion.
Most of all, I consider myself a gamer who had the luck of having a few publishers who believed in my games. I published Vinhos in 2010; CO2 two years later; Kanban in 2014 and the Gallerist in 2015. This year I also did a major re-release of my first game Vinhos--with a great production done by my friends at Eagle-Gryphon Games. In this new production of Vinhos Deluxe, you can find the original 2010 game as well as a new streamlined version based on 6 years of playtesting by thousands of players all over the world-- including You (I hope).
Fortunately, all my games were well-accepted by enough gamers that they were "successful". Lisboa will be my 6th big release. I believe it has the strongest and best-integrated theme of all my games. It's a game about my town and its reconstruction by the great builders of a bygone era. I hope you will enjoy Lisboa as much you did all the others.
I have a tendency to design "thinking" games because those are the types of games I love to play. A big box game takes a lot of time to design, play test and develop. So when I begin such an endeavor, I always look for a few characteristics that are fun for me in those type of games. They need to be challenging; they need to require deep thinking and difficult decision-making; they must allow great control; and they must involve intense competition and heavy strategy. Those are the games I love to play and design.
I usually start to look for a theme to be the foundation of the game. Strategic thinking inside a game that is supported by a strong theme must always be present. That it is the most challenging thing when designing such a game. My games are usually based in a simple core that offers the player a lot of layers to explore. Lisboa is not an exception to any of this and I hope it gives you the challenge and the fun you are looking for.
I like interconnected mechanisms a lot — pursuing strategies, different complex paths — but I also love to adapt, make tactical moves, and have some randomness in games. I try to avoid luck in longer games. I believe luck should be delivered not by the system, but by player decisions.
I also love to move pieces on a board. That is precisely one of the things I most care about in games. I love moving wood and cardboard over the board, I like to touch, to feel. For me, it makes the game much more dynamic, colorful, and fun. Because of that, my games always deliver to the players loads of great components inside a big heavy box. And you may expect the same in Lisboa. I hope you enjoy playing Lisboa as much as I enjoyed designing it. I really still love playing it! Go to the rules section above, read the rules and take a look at the video. I sincerely hope this is a game for you and your friends. Thank you very much for reading this and for supporting me on this campaign.
MEET THE ARTIST
Ian O’Toole is an Irish illustrator and graphic designer working out of Perth in Western Australia. Lisboa is his third collaboration with Vital and Eagle-Gryphon Games, following The Gallerist and Vinhos Deluxe. He has over fifteen years’ experience working in many creative fields, producing illustration, design and 3d animation for a broad selection of industries.
Ian works in a wide variety of styles and particularly enjoys drawing from design trends throughout history. Lisboa presented an excellent chance to do just that. Ian works from his home in Perth, one of the most isolated cities in the world, with his wife, two children and dog.
We are very pleased to announce that we will have co-production partners in Brazil; Germany/Austria/Switzerland; France/Belgium; Italy; Israel; Spain/Portugal; Poland; Singapore/Malaysia/The Phillipines/Indonesia and China for Lisboa. This will help Backers from each of these countries place their orders and save on shipping expenses. You will need to contact them for payment arrangements and to calculate shipping. You will need to order your games from them during the same period of time that we are running this Kickstarter (November 15 through December 15) in order to be treated just as if you were backing this project via KS. If you do, you will receive (through these partners) the same Stretch Goals you would have gotten through us if you had backed this KS.
We will be regularly updating the combined Stretch Goals from each of these partners for orders taken between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15. The total of all such orders when added to our KS total will be used to determine the achieved Stretch Goals!

You may pledge for this and contact them at Spieleschmiede.de to arrange for shipping and obtain any other information. They will be preparing full German rules and a player-aid for this otherwise language-neutral game.

We are aware that many of you would like to be able to pick up your copy of the Origins Convention in Columbus, Ohio, on June 14 to 18, 2017. If possible, we will try to accommodate you. This is going to be tight timing given the schedule for both production and shipping as well, but we will do the best we can. If you want to try the Origins pick up option, please select Antarctica as your shipping address and Kickstarter will automatically add $5 to your pledge to help us defray shipping, fees, taxes, and drayage expenses that we will incur. If we are not able to get the games to Origins in time, we will apply the $5 to conventional shipping from our US warehouse to your real shipping address, which we will get from you at the time of our post-Kickstarter survey--a week or two after this KS ends.

Risks and challenges
Eagle-Gryphon Games stands by our products. If there are issues with your game, please contact our customer service department within 30 days of receiving your copy of the game that you have pledged for. We will take every step necessary to get you exactly what you purchased. Contact: email@example.com.
Shipping issues are relatively uncommon, but they do sometimes occur, especially when shipping to destinations outside of the US. We will send you tracking information when it is possible, but sometimes it is not. We cannot guarantee that there will not be local shipping problems, as we cannot guarantee the service and reliability of the various postal/delivery services involved around the world. You will have to assume that risk along with us.
We double check all of your games for damage before packing them up to send to you. However there is a small chance that your games may get damaged during shipping by the carrier. Please keep in mind that we did not cause that damage, nor are we responsible for it. If your package is damaged then your first recourse should be to recover your losses from the carrier, not us. If you are still struggling to find a solution through your carrier then we can try to assist you.
We will always do our best through Kickstarter updates to keep you as informed as possible to the status of your game(s). However, in this business there are a number of uncertain and ever changing factors that are beyond our control, such as: holidays, customs, quality control, inspection delays, inclement weather and dock strikes - to name a few. As you can imagine we have little to no control over such factors, but if anything is to occur we assure you that you will be the first to know.
To put it simply, you will get everything you are promised when you pledge to one of our Kickstarter Projects, and it will be delivered to you in as timely a manner as possible.
Shipping can be problematic and expensive. We ask that you are patient and tolerant and share the burden with us of making sure that shipping is as positive an experience as it can be. But be aware of what is involved please.
We ship your game(s) to you via various fulfillment partners located around the world. We do this in an effort to keep expenses as low possible, and hope that you will see this change reflected in the shipping costs for this project.
Shipping is far more comprehensive than many people realize. Not only does “shipping” include the postage cost, it also includes: getting the container shipped to the US, or the EU, or Australia; the Customs and VAT (or equivalent) and other import fees and taxes; the drayage from the port to the warehouse; the warehouse fees to unload and sort out and prepare packages; the materials and labor involved in the last item; fees to the warehouse for their service to us. Only after all of that do we consider the postage! We need to cover all of those costs--and they really add up. Frequently they cost as much or more than the game(s) did to produce.
When we combine a low margin price (such as the one we offer on all of our KS projects) with this shipping expense, we do not make any profit if we are not very careful. We hope that the shipping we are charging for this project is as low as we can make it and still stay in business. We ask that you understand this, and when we occasionally make mistakes in quoting shipping expenses, please be tolerant. We will give you a refund if we must make shipping fee changes and they are not acceptable to you.
We also reserve the right to combine the shipping of any and all pledges for multiple KS projects if the projects and the shipping are run close to the same time and if we can ship them all within a reasonable time (30 days) of us receiving them. Of course, we will advise you ASAP if it looks like we will be holding up shipping for this reason and you will always have the right to pay additional fees to get expedited delivery on individual orders/pledges.
Internationally, for unusual shipping destinations or multiple games, get in touch with us and tell us the total of how many games you want; which ones; and where you would like them shipped.
To get in touch with us, please send us a Message (not a Comment) using the "Contact Me" button at the top of the KS project. Or email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
We will not ship to Russia, the Ukraine and select places in Asia and the rest of the world, except for specially-made arrangements wherein the Backer takes the risk involved in receiving the package.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
