The Processor Independent Embedded Platform (PIEP) is more than a collection of embedded hardware components. It truly is a 'platform' capable of working with multiple processors. There is nothing like it on the market today.

FEATURES/DIFFERENTIATORS

Processor Independence - Our processors are not embedded on the motherboard; rather, E3 processor boards snap or plug into the motherboard - we currently offer FreeScale, PIC and ARM boards.

Pluggable & Stackable Peripherals - potentially 36 peripherals can be stacked on the motherboard.

Ease of Use - Wire-cutters and a small screw driver is all that you must have to use the PIEP.

Competitive Footprint - roughly 4 x 4 overall and most peripherals occupy a 1.25 x 1.25 space.

Rugged Design - suitable for low-volume, field-deployable systems.

Remote Installation/Mount Capabilities with our Remote Mount Kit.

Arduino (UNO) Compatibility - PIEP peripherals can be used with Arduino products and Arduino based peripherals can be used with the PIEP motherboard.

 

PRODUCTS

Our patent pending Processor Independent Embedded Platform (PIEP) allows embedded solution developers to prototype and test their designs quickly and easily. We currently offer the PIEP with three supporting processors (PIC, ARM, Freescale) and approximately 20 peripherals.   • Motherboard (4 x 4) - accepts 1 of 3 processor boards and up to 36 peripherals
  • Atmel ARM Processor Board - 1 of 3 processors, plugs into the motherboard
  • Freescale Processor Board - 1 of 3 processors, plugs into the motherboard
  • PIC Processor Board - 1 of 3 processors, plugs into the motherboard
  • 3-Digit Numerical Display Board - great for providing numeric feedback
  • Accelerometer Board - digital and analog modes
  • Arduino Shield Adapter Board - two-way integrations with Arduino Shields
  • Breakout Board - a highly versatile peripheral with many uses, compatible with all SPIP headers and voltages
  • Buzzer Board - great for audible feedback
  • CAN Bus Driver Board - a popular embedded communication choice for end uses requiring high speed, reliable communications
  • Digital Port Expander Board - The E3 Digital Port Expander Board creates two 8-bit general purpose I/O ports with interrupt capabilities
  • Digital to Analog Converter Board - two-channel, twelve-bit
  • EEPROM Board - the peripheral interface is I2C based and operates at either 3.3V or 5V
  • H-Bridge Board - a double-wide board (it occupies two peripheral slots) that drives two servo or one stepper motor (24 Volts / 2 Amps max)
  • Motion Sensor Board - an infrared based peripheral with a rated range of up to 5 meters
  • Real Time Date/Clock Board - time/date functions, I2C based with an onboard lithium battery backup
  • Relay Board - offers two small signal relays, each configured for single pole, double throw operation
  • SCI to RS232 Board - converts TTL level serial communications signals to RS232 compliant signals
  • SCI to USB Board - add USB capabilities to your embedded project
  • SPI to SCI Board - creates an additional SCI port from SPI resources by means of the MAX3100 interface chip
  • Switch & LED Board - user control and feedback with four momentary switches and four visual status indicators
  • Temp/RH Board - measure temp and relative humidity (-40 to 85 degrees Celcius and 0% to 100% relative humidity)
  • Terminal Board - a general purpose peripheral that is useful for debugging, testing and external signal interfaces
  • Thermocouple Board - ideally suited for high temperature measurements (optimized - 25 to 100 degrees C; full range - 0 to 400 degrees C)
  • Remote Mount Kit - two breakout boards and an interconnect cable

ABOUT US

E3 Embedded Systems, LLC is based in Augusta, Georgia. E3 was founded by Kevin Huffman and Chad DeMeyers in the Summer of 2013. Over the past year we have established the company and honed our products. Kevin invented the PIEP... first conceiving it more than three years ago. MISSION

E3 Embedded Systems offers creative products for creative people. Our embedded controller platform can rapidly help people learn, design, prototype and build embedded solutions. E3's mission is to continually grow a processor independent product base that is the most flexible and comprehensive available. We strive to make our platform one that exceeds customers’ expectations and allows them to save time and money. At E3, we are fully aware that our success depends on yours – it is a simple truth that guides our decisions.

HIGH-LEVEL PROJECT PLAN

  • Initial round of funding - DONE
  • Business basics (Federal Tax ID, Business Licenses, Banking Accounts, State Registration, Patent, Operating Agreement,Website, Email, etc.) - DONE
  • Products designed and beta tested (Kevin has been working part-time on this for years) - DONE
  • Ten-build - Kevin, the inventor, created and assembled 10 prototypes (of everything... 10 motherboards, 30 processor boards [10 per processor] and 200 peripherals [10 per peripheral])... we gave away the ten-build to trusted embedded developers (friends, engineers, engineering schools, embedded development publications, etc.) and we plan to get feedback from these trusted sources prior to our first production run - IN PROCESS
  • Ten-build feedback changes - Based on the feedback we get from our ten-build evaluators, we will tweak the PIEP - FUTURE
  • KickStarter video and campaign - IN PROCESS
  • KickStarter campaign successful - Assuming you like the PIEP as much as we do, we will reach our goal(s) from a successful KickStarter campaign - FUTURE/IN PROCESS
  • Establish manufacturing partner(s) - Kevin has been a custom embedded developer for 25 years and has worked with MANY US based companies that can manufacture E3's designs... some of these same companies helped us with our prototypes - FUTURE
  • Initial Production Run - We plan to use KickStarter funds for our initial production run, and, a significant part of our stretch goals will be used to accelerate new product development - FUTURE
  • KickStarter rewards - With a successful campaign, we will ship your rewards... many of those rewards will come from our first production run - FUTURE
  • Establish partnerships with online retailers - FUTURE
  • Sell PIEP online - FUTURE
  • Sell PIEP direct (in the education space) - FUTURE
  • Continue to innovate and invent other PIEP related products - ONGOING

REWARDS

We are promising most of our rewards to be delivered in January; HOWEVER, please know that we plan to do everything in our power to make shipments in December (in time for Christmas and the Holiday season).  We think we can make it... but we do not want to make a promise we cannot keep (the timing will be tight).

STRETCH GOALS

We have not decided the $ amount for this stretch goal, but it will not be too far above our initial goal.  We are calling it Tech Bundle 1.  If we hit the goal, we will commit to designing, testing and selling (in 2015) 4 of the 6 products listed below.

  • 2x4 Motherboard - Fewer peripherals but smaller form factor, (this will definitely make the cut)
  • BeagleBone Adapter - Similar to the Arduino Shield
  • Tiny Circuits Adapter - Similar to the Arduino Shield
  • LCD Display
  • Flash Memory
  • Ethernet Adapter

Risks and challenges

We do not envision many obstacles to a successful campaign as we have reviewed our numbers several times. Our biggest obstacles would be a jump in manufacturing costs and/or transportation/delivery costs. We are hoping to use KickStarter funds to (1) send out promised rewards and (2) fund our initial production run. Should we run into obstacles, sending out your promised rewards will remain our primary goal. We may be forced to simply have a smaller batch of products produced in our initial production run. In other words, if we run into obstacles, it is our intention to have those obstacles affect us... not you.
