The Society for the Preservation of CJ Henderson

$4,232

On July 4th, 2014 the world lost an iconic author and all-around great guy, CJ Henderson. He lost his battle with cancer, but he did not go quietly and he will not be forgotten. His work is immortalized in over 40 novels or works of non-fiction, and at least as many collections, anthologies, and magazines. In fact, new works by CJ Henderson will publish for years to come thanks to his heroic efforts to finish and find homes for those projects as-yet unpublished at the time of his illness.

CJ always did what he could to give other authors a boost. Encouraging them, mentoring them, sending opportunities their way. With that in mind those of us who called him friend feel there is no better tribute we can raise in his memory than an anthology filled with people he has helped over the years, writing stories inspired by CJ or his work.

We are running this campaign a little longer than usual, primarily because December 26th was CJ's birthday and we plan to celebrate that along with the landmarks we hit with this campaign.

He touched our hearts and now we share that with the world because he will not be forgotten. Will you help us share this amazing man with the world?

CJ's collection of works is vast and varied. Everything from hard-boiled detectives to military science fiction. He's written comics for Marvel and flash fiction for the annual Boris Valejo calendars. He's know for writing pulp and writing Lovecraftian mythos. We wanted to capture some small cross-section of that scope of work.

With that in mind, the authors in this collection--Jean Rabe, James Chambers, Patrick Thomas, Greg Schauer, Leona Wisoker, John L. French, Jeff Young, David Boop, Robert M. Price, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, and CJ Henderson himself--have lent their own voices to CJ's worlds, sought to capture a glimmer of him through his beloved written word.

This collection is currently comprised of the following stories:

  • What Tales He Knows by John L. French
  • Henderson Rising by Patrick Thomas
  • Shadow of the Infinite by Leona Wisoker
  • Every Second of Every Day by James Chambers
  • Finder by Jeff Young
  • In the Dying Light by Danielle Ackley-McPhail
  • Star Lights by Jean Rabe
  • Scorn and Jealousy by CJ Henderson and David Boop
  • Digging Doomsday by Robert M. Price
  • Sorrow by CJ Henderson

The collection will feature custom cover artwork drawn by Ben Fogletto and colored by Erica Henderson.

Quick Explanation: Kickstarter doesn't really have an intuitive way to do add-ons, and the process can be confusing, so here's a quick explanation.

To add one of the below onto your current pledge, just click on the "Manage Your Pledge" button at the top right of the page, click in the "Pledge Amount" box, and change the pledge amount to reflect the addition of the amount of the add-on you want.

Example: if your current pledge amount is $10, and you want to add a $5 add-on, you would click into the "Pledge Amount" box and change the pledge amount to $15. At the end of the Kickstarter we'll send out a questionnaire to find out what add-ons you contributed for.

Please note, for each of the authors in this book this is a for-the-love anthology. Each has elected to not take payment for their stories, so as our thanks we have included their other works in the Add-Ons section of this campaign, along with titles from CJ's backlist. Please browse through and see if any of the titles catch your interest. Where applicable, we can autograph a book to whomever you want and you can order more than one copy of the same book when doing an add-on.

Leona Wisoker writes speculative fiction, edits, teaches, blogs, and occasionally reviews books, music, and food items. Her work is fueled equally by coffee and conviction. She often chooses reading material alphabetically rather than by subject or author, which has led her to read about aardvarks, birds, child-warriors, dragons, eggs, faeries, ghosts, horses, and many other random subjects.

Leona's science-fantasy series, The Children of the Desert, is set in a world still struggling through a number of basic moral and developmental issues. The beliefs and strengths of each character are tested to the limit in the course of multiple intersecting story arcs. And, of course, there's a mysterious ancient race in the background that could destroy all life on earth if they get sufficiently annoyed. Anything less would just be boring.

Her short stories have appeared in Futures: Fire to Fly, Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, Galactic Creatures anthology, Sha'Da: Pawns anthology, and more. She has lived in Florida, Connecticut, Oregon, New Hampshire, Las Vegas, Alaska, California, and Virginia; has experienced the alternate realities of Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, New York, Long Island, and Italy; and believes that "home is wherever my coffee cup is filled."

She lives in Virginia with an extraordinarily patient husband and two large dogs.

Jeff Young is a bookseller first and a writer second – although he wouldn’t mind a reversal of fortune. He received a Writers of the Future award for “Written in Light” which appears in the 26th L.Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future anthology. Jeff has contributed to the anthologies By Any Means, Best Laid Plans, Dogs of War, In an Iron Cage: The Magic of Steampunk, Clockwork Chaos and Fantastic Futures 13, as well as the upcoming anthologies Gaslight and Grimm and The Ministry of Extraordinary Weapons. He is the editor for the Drunken Comic Book Monkey line for Fortress Publishing as well as the anthology TV Gods. He has led the Watch the Skies SF&F Discussion Group of Camp Hill and Harrisburg for thirteen years.

The Weird Wild West is an anthology of fantastic stories of the Wild West as it never was—and in all the weirdest ways that can be imagined, featuring some of the best writers in the speculative fiction world. All the strangeness history left out of the books...it's here, waiting for you, pilgrim. With an initial line-up of stories by R S Belcher, Tonia Brown, Diana Pharaoh Francis, John Hartness, Jonathan Maberry, Gail Martin, Misty Massey, and James Tuck, and four slots for open submissions.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the contributors to the first Athena's Daughters.

The Athena's Daughters anthology series was envisioned as a platform by which creative women could showcase their incredible talents in a historically male-dominated genre.

The result is a series of anthologies where women are involved in all aspects of the creative process, from the artists to the authors, the editors to the project managers. Women of all ages and races, abilities and physical attributes, unified by a love for art and literature.

For the second installment of the series, Silence in the Library Publishing issued an open submissions call, intent on populating the anthology with the best speculative fiction from up and coming women authors, including Emily Lavin Leverett, one of the editors of The Weird Wild West. After reading hundreds of submissions, the editors, Janine K. Spendlove and Maggie Allen, have put together a group of stories that we know their readers are going to love.

To support their campaign and get even more great fiction visit: http://tiny.cc/athenas2.
