220 BACKER BONUS REWARD - To celebrate our final day we are adding a new bonus reward level. If we hit 220 backers all backers will receive DRM-Free copies of all five Radiation Angels - The Mission Files short stories by James Daniel Ross.

PUBLICATION NOTE: Man and Machine is expected to complete by November 2016 not 2017. If We Had Known is expected to complete by March 2017. If unlocked, The Best of Defending the Future and From the Archives are both expected to complete by November 2017. Apologies for any confusion.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Man and Machine Dedication -Today it is the anniversary of CJ Henderson's passing.

CJ is the reason The Defending The Future Anthology Series exists. Before CJ passed he wrote something of a farewell to the DTF family. It spoke of his pleasure and joy in being among the DTF rank of authors and his experience writing for the series. It's not a story, but it is deeply personal and a fitting final word from the grandfather of the series.

In tribute to him and his involvement, Man and Machine will be dedicated to CJ Henderson and the book will include this final farewell from our friend. Also, for those short on funds or who are CJ fans rather than DTF fans, we are adding for this week a special $1 pledge level that will get backers at that level a digital copy of CJ's farewell and their names in the back of the book on a CJ Henderson memorial page.

Please share the word on this if you know anyone who might be interested: http://tiny.cc/DTF7

Thank you all for being a part of this journey and helping to keep CJ's legacy alive.

The plan had been to un-man the battlespace; replacing flesh and blood with steel and carbon fiber. Machines, both remote-guided and autonomous, would fight and be destroyed in the name of freedom, sparing the troops. However, as with all arms races, the opposing side’s technology eventually catches ups to yours, resulting in the need to put lives back on the frontline to deal with the unknown.

Gear up! This fight is far from over in 13 new stories of the struggle to survive, the new machines of war.

With stories by Bud Sparhawk, Jennifer Brozek, Ronald Garner, Aaron Rosenberg, Brenda Cooper, James Chambers, Nancy Jane Moore, Patrick Thomas, Jeff Young, Eric Hardenbrook, Robert E. Waters, Anton Kukal, and Danielle Ackley-McPhail.

FIRST 100 BACKERS - Will receive special eSpec Books DRM-free editions of the first six books in the Defending the Future series: Breach the Hull, So it Begins, By Other Means, No Man's Land, Best Laid Plains, and Dogs of War. (If you already have these books and would like to wave your bonus to the next backer in line you have that option.)

DOUBLE UP BONUSES - We have a pretty light goal on this campaign because our expenses are light. That means we don't really have room for Pre-Funding Bonuses...but we do love our free loot, so here's what we're going to do. For every time we hit funding that is a multiple of our goal amount, you get a group of DRM-Free stories! (Details to come.)

Quick Explanation: Kickstarter doesn't really have an intuitive way to do add-ons, and the process can be confusing, so here's a quick explanation. To add one of the below onto your current pledge, just click on the "Manage Your Pledge" button at the top right of the page, click in the "Pledge Amount" box, and change the pledge amount to reflect the addition of the amount of the add-on you want.

Example: if your current pledge amount is $10, and you want to add a $5 add-on, you would click into the "Pledge Amount" box and change the pledge amount to $15. At the end of the Kickstarter, we'll send out a questionnaire to find out what add-ons you contributed for.

NOTES: all ebooks listed available in .epub, mobi, or .pdf, unless indicated. Also, we can autograph a book to whomever you want and you can order more than one copy of the same book when doing an add-on.

$5 – Add a DRM-Free digital copy of the eSpec Books title of your choice to your order (Gaslight and Grimm, The Weird Wild West, The Side of Good/The Side of Evil, The Society for the Preservation of CJ Henderson, Dogs of War, If We Had Known, Best of DTF, OR From the Archives). Multiply by the number of titles desired if you want more than one.

$5 – Add DRM-Free digital copies of the James Daniel Ross's eShorts collection: Radiation Angels: The Mission Files to your order.

$10 – Add DRM-Free digital copies of the Jeffrey Lyman eShorts collection: The Fall of Autumn, Lord of Fire, Lord of Wind, and The Troll King.

$10 – Add a custom Defending the Future or Man and Machine color embroidered mission patch to your order.

$10 – Add a custom DTF: Breach the Hull color embroidered patch to your order. The number in the upper right of each image represents how many we have of that patch. If a patch is not specified, Jeffrey Lyman's BREACH THE HULL patch is the default.

$20 – Upgrade your digital copy of Man and Machine to a print copy.

$25 – Add a print copy of the eSpec Books title of your choice to your order (Gaslight and Grimm, The Weird Wild West, The Side of Good/The Side of Evil, The Society for the Preservation of CJ Henderson, Dogs of War, If We Had Known, Best of DTF, OR From the Archives). Multiply by the number of titles desired if you want more than one. They make great gifts! (Includes domestic shipping. If you're a backer outside the U.S. who has backed at a level that does not include shipping, please add $25 for shipping.)

$35 - Add a custom Dogs of War tee shirt to your pledge reward, (Includes domestic shipping. If you're a backer outside the U.S. who has backed at a level that does not include shipping, please add $25 for shipping.)

Breach The Hull

"[Breach the Hull] kicks down the doors in a way that allows anyone access to the genre [ . . . ] it read like a bunch of soldiers sitting around swapping stories of the wars. Fun, fast-paced, and packed with action. I give it a thumbs up." —Jonathan Maberry, multi-Bram Stoker Award-winning author

By Other Means

If you enjoy a well-told story in the military SF genre, this is the book for you." —Don Sakers, Analog

No Man's Land

"There's not a single piece here that isn't well worth reading." —David Weber, bestselling author of the Honorverse series

Best Laid Plans

"Highly recommended for McPhail fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, military/naval snafus, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!" – 5 Stars, Arthur W. Jordin, Amazon Reviewer

Dogs of War

"Dogs of War takes the theme of dogs (or other companion animals) in combat, and runs with it in seventeen different directions, each one fascinating. [...] Military science fictions fans will love this anthology." – Luke's Reviews

Risks and challenges

This is a relatively low-risk campaign. We have already begun receiving and editing the stories and we have a proven track record with the DTF series. While it is always, unfortunately, possible for things to go wrong, those would be in the nature of delays only.
