Our world is undergoing unprecedented change in terms of human history due to climate change. Although there's a lot of potential for mitigating climate change by reducing GHG emissions, deforestation, etc., it's also important to adapt to the changes that are already arriving.

Adaptation can take many forms (technical, social, etc.), but it will always require goals and plans to achieve them. This project will contribute to setting goals and making plans by helping people see how their lives -- and the lives of people around the world -- might be affected by climate change.

This project will contribute to that process by rewarding writers whose short stories (or "visions") will help us understand life in a climate-changed world. Those visions will appear in Life Plus 2 Meters (volume 2).

You can visit the Life Plus 2 Meters project here to download a free copy of the first book, Life Plus 2 Meters (volume 1), which has contributions from 27 authors. That book shows that there are talented writers with interesting ways of thinking about how climate change will affect our futures.

The funds raised from this Kickstarter will be combined with €300 of seed funding from my university (Leiden University College) to support prizes for authors submitting new visions to the Life Plus 2 Meters project. These visions will be published as Life Plus 2 Meters (volume 2).

Kickstarter funds (net of costs and KS fees) will fund four sets of prizes, each with first, second and third prizes:

  • Storyteller vision, from any author
  • Practitioner vision, from any author
  • Best vision, for authors 25 years or younger.
  • Best vision, for authors from economically developing countries (EDCs)

Rules: Authors can enter their vision for either storyteller OR Practitioner category. Under-26 and/or EDC authors can win in the main category OR in their own category (not both). These separate categories are to encourage entries from under-represented authors.

Prizes in each category will be allocated in first/second/third prize shares of 50/33/17 percent. Thus, $600 in total prize money would send $150 to each category, with $75 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third place.

All funds raised above the target (net of costs and fees) will go towards prizes.

Note: I will not make anything from this project. (I've spent about $300, but it's been worth it ;)

Winners will be determined by votes. Voters will come from backers that choose rewards that have votes and authors who contributed to Volume 1. (They cannot vote if they contribute to Volume 2.)

Bottom Line: You are supporting a project to reward the best authors of visions of (non) adaptation to life in a climate changed world. Thank you!

Risks and challenges

I have completed a successful kickstarter (see The WaterSmarts Calendar at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dzetland/the-2015-water-smarts-calender) and written one book that is available for free (see Living with Water Scarcity at http://livingwithwaterscarcity.com).

I have also bootstrapped Volume 1 of this project, as a demonstration of its potential.

I am confident that this project will deliver amazing stories to backers -- and the world.
