Grand Success! And the campaign goes on...
Catamancer has been successfully funded! Its basic goal of €2,600 will allow us to finish the game with over 100 cards with sketch art for all the cards. Thanks to our stretch goals, we'll be able to additionally complete at least 17 cards with fully rendered artwork! And finally, we're funding the art for around 40-50 cards ourselves.
That leaves us with around 40 cards that will only receive sketch art right now. To be able to afford fully rendered art for these cards, our campaign continues on our Catamancer website! If you want to support Catamancer and still be able to receive the Kickstarter supporter rewards, then you can do so via Paypal or by contacting us directly!
The alpha phase should start in January 2016, so we hope to see you then! Stay tuned for updates and thank you, thank you, thank you for all your support!

Catamancer in the Media
- Wired - 'Catamancer' is the all-cat 'Hearthstone' you've been waiting for
- GameSkinny - Kickstarter Spotlight
- Furstarter - A Game of Kitties: Catamancer
Catamancer is a free-to-play online Collectible Card Game (CCG) with an emphasis on fun, strategy and cats. Units are placed on a grid-based arena board, allowing for unique mechanics not seen in other CCGs.
Defend fields, jump over units, knock them back or pull them towards you! Summon neutral units that don't belong to either player, use unit skills and hide your units underneath cardboard boxes to play ultimate mind games with your opponent. And this is only the beginning!
Help us create art for over 100 cards to get this game going!
Here's some pre-alpha gameplay footage!
Our reward tiers stack, meaning unmentioned rewards of lower tiers often are included in higher tiers. For a complete reference of all our rewards, check out this table below!
We will be ready for alpha in January 2016. If you are at the Zoologist tier or above, you will be part of a small group of people who help us test the game and provide us with feedback. Your feedback will have direct influence on the game interface and game mechanics.
NOTE: All Zoologist backers receive 2 alpha accounts, so they can enjoy the alpha with one of their friends.
We expect Beta testing to begin around June 2016, but possibly earlier. Beta testers will assist us with tracking down bugs, edge cases and providing feedback on game balance. As a beta tester, you will have a big influence on the balance of the game and on our direction for future cards!
Kickstarter Exclusive Card Back
This beautiful card back will be exclusively available for backers of Catamancer!
This is just a little something to reward our BGO players! It will be previewed in BGO soon, including its animations!
If you don't have a credit card to back our project, then there are a few things you can do:
- Find a friend or family member who can help you out.
- Use a trustworthy, reliable prepaid card option. We know that Paysafecard is a reliable service that can be used in many countries.
- Wait for the project to reach its funding goal. If it is met, we will open up an additional Paypal payment method!
Early in development we decided that Catamancer should be a quality CCG with beautiful artwork. We've browsed through the portfolios of hundreds of artists over the course of many months in search of talented artists with differing art styles. We could never have guessed that we could find so many talented artists who would be so happy to work with us on Catamancer!

Some call me the Rainbow Wrangler, others might skip the informalities and call me a UK-based freelancer artist. I’ve been colouring comics professionally since 2008, working with many clients from Marvel, Dark Horse, Markosia and Orang Utan Comics. Most recently, I’ve expanded my creative study into costume and prop-making. I’m also a longtime graphics contributor for Board Game Online. Catamancer is an absolute dream come true; it means continued collaboration with Dys and Sil, and cats, cats as far as the eye can see! Being a humble servant to four of my own, inspiration is never too far away! ;3

I am a US based digital painter who focuses on fun, fantasy, and light-hearted themes. My technique and style are a blend of modern methods with roots in traditional oil painting employing a large color palette and high saturation. I currently work full time as a conceptual illustrator for a research laboratory and spend my evenings creating personal illustrations or working on client commissions.
Rachel Sharp / sharkie19 (portfolio)
I'm at a point in my life where I'd like to take that next step toward getting a career doing what I truly love, making art. I'm always striving to improve and with improvement comes the increasing cost of classes and materials to learn new things. I've been sharing my work with the internet since 2007 and I look forward to doing the same for many years to come.

I like to dream and show my dreams to people to give world more magic. :3 Also I love collecting fossils. I love to use the theme of paleontology in my works.
Devin Elle Kurtz / TamberElla (portfolio)
I am a digital artist who specializes in realistic creatures, both fantastic and actual. I like music festivals, sushi, and my sixteen pet tarantulas.
Chelsea Kenna / Autogatos (portfolio)
I graduated from Laguna College of Art and Design in 2008 with a BFA in Illustration. I spent several years working in social and mobile gaming as a Lead Artist and concept artist, and currently work as a freelance illustrator doing illustration for picture books, greeting cards, apparel, comics, and a variety of other projects. My main artistic passions are cartooning and illustration. I especially enjoy drawing animals, but am always willing to tackle a wide variety of subject matter. I primarily work digitally, using Adobe Photoshop. My other interests include cooking, video games, and cats.
Olga Levina / SceithAilm (portfolio)
I am a Russian artist from Saint Petersburg with a great passion for Norse mythology. My love for Tolkien has taken shape in the form of Catdalf the Grey and Catdalf the White in Catamancer.
Meike Hakkaart / Maquenda (portfolio)
I'm Meike, a 22 year old girl from the Netherlands. I'm in my third year of art school to study Illustration Design. I am a naturalist and wildlife/fantasy painter. I see many beautiful shapes and patterns in nature that I blend into my paintings.
Jonas Jödicke / JoJoesArt (portfolio)
I am a digital and watercolor freelance artist from Berlin. I was born in 1994 and started to grow a solid internet fanbase when I began to upload some of my works to social media platforms in 2009. I love to portrait dream-like and surreal creatures and sceneries. My art makes the viewers dive into different worlds and so do I whenever I pick up a brush and start to paint.
Johanna Tarkela / Lhuin (portfolio)
I'm a freelance illustrator from Finland, currently residing in the UK. I work mainly digitally in Photoshop with a focus on realism, and I love portraying anything to do with nature and animals & creatures, with a bit of an addiction to detail and working on fur! I also enjoy trying to create an interesting atmosphere in my work with the colours and light I use.
Alli White / Skirtzzz (portfolio)
I am a tiny gal who lives in the mountains of Northwestern Idaho. When I'm not having conversations with the wild turkeys, I'm probably drawing cute girls.
Petr Passek Aleksandrovich (portfolio)
My name is Petr Passek. I am professionally engaged in painting. I studied at the Volgograd State Social Pedagogical University on the graphic faculty. I love painting and drawing for my work and I decided long ago that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life!
When you play a game of Catamancer, you use a deck of cards that you have constructed yourself in the Catalogue. A deck consists of 30 cards. You can only put 2 copies of a card in your deck and only 1 copy of Mythical cards.
On the left side of the arena you see your own Catalyst. Your ultimate goal is to protect your Catalyst and destroy your opponent's. You summon units by playing Unit Cards (red) and unleash abilities by playing Ability Cards (green).
Every turn you recharge your Energy and gain one extra Max Energy. So the first turn you have 1 Energy, the second turn you have 2 Energy and so on. This allows you to start using more expensive cards as the game progresses.
At the start of your turn you draw a random card from your deck. During your turn you can use the Buy Card option to draw another card from your deck for an Energy Cost. This cost increases by 1 every time it is used throughout the game.
Every card has an Energy Cost, displayed in the top left of the card (purple crystal). This shows how much Energy you need to pay to play that card.
Units have three values: Attack (red crystal), Health (green crystal), Speed (orange crystal).
- Attack is the amount of damage this unit does in an attack.
- Health indicates the hitpoints of the unit. When it reaches 0, the unit dies.
- Speed is the amount of Moves that a unit starts each turn with. Moves are spent on moving and using unit skills.
Units typically cannot move or attack the same turn they were summoned. Units with the keyword Initiative break this rule and can move and attack the turn they're played.
The game ends when one of either Catalysts reaches 0 Health, causing that player to lose. Since there are many cards (and new ones being added regularly) there will be endless strategies available to win the game.
All your collected cards are stored inside your Catalogue. This is the place where you build new decks, combine cards and breed cards. You can save your named decks easily, allowing you to quickly select one of your decks when you want to play. We haven't decided how many decks you can store, but rest assured it will be a lot more than 9!
Unit Cards Most cards summon units. You can summon your unit in the Friendly Zone, which is your side of the arena. Units form your army and managing them is key to your success!
Although there are some factionless ability cards, most of them are found in factions. Abilities often have very powerful effects, capable of turning the tides of your game. Buff your units or unleash powerful area damage on your opponent!
- Core - Free. Every players gets these 25 cards. Basic mechanics.
- Common - Easy to collect. Simple mechanics.
- Rare - Harder to collect. More complex mechanics.
- Mythical - Very hard to collect. Unique mechanics.
Most cards in the game belong to no faction. These cards can be put into any deck. Faction specific cards can only be put into a deck of a that faction. For our initial Kickstarter goal, there will be 3 factions:
- Hell Cats
- Ninja Cats
Each faction has its own strengths, but we'll leave it to the community to find out what those are!
These rare cards can sometimes be found inside Card Packs. A Breeder Card allows you to turn it into any card of that quality. These are amazing when you're trying to build a specific deck!
To expand your collection of cards, you need to obtain Card Packs. These can be bought in our Game Shop, but they can also be earned by simply playing the game. A cheap way to pick up early Card Packs is backing our Kickstarter. How convenient!
A Card Pack is always faction themed. It contains 3 faction cards and 3 factionless cards. At least one of these cards is Rare, but possibly more! There is a tiny chance that your Card Pack is a Mythical Card Pack, containing 2 Mythical, 3 Rares and 1 Breeder!
Card Combining When you have more than 2 copies of a specific card, you can combine the leftover cards to craft a new card! By combining cards you will create a random new card of which you don't have 2 copies already! Very handy when you're trying to complete your collection!
Free to play
Catamancer is entirely free to play, but does provide optional purchase options. It is possible for players to collect every card, skin, animation and achievement through normal gameplay.
Catamancer is being developed using our home made Frostbolt Framework, which allows the game to easily be deployed on many different platforms. At first, Catamancer will become available on PC (browser), Android and iOS. No matter where you are, you'll be able to play Catamancer! And you only need a single account!
Player versus Player (PvP)
First and foremost you can play against other players over the internet. You can play a quick casual game or an intense ranked game against an opponent of equal skill.
PvP is not for everyone and many people enjoy solo content once in a while. We're dedicated to adding a lot of fun and challenging solo options to the game. Solve puzzles, battle special computer bosses or break records, both personal and public!
Most CCGs don't have achievements or only very basic ones. We are dedicated towards creating a great amount of fun achievements that will tempt you to try interesting builds and strategies. They will be fun to collect and help you learn to play the game.
The more you play, the more you expand your card collection. With every new card, tons of new possibilities arise. Besides collecting cards, we aim to add many more collectibles, such as achievements, skins, animations and emotes!
Catamancer offers a wide array of card mechanics. A card explains in its card text how it functions, with keywords written in bold text.
+X Ability Power
Ability Power affects the power of certain Ability Cards in various ways.
Any damage this unit takes is reduced by X, down to a minimum of 1.
When summoned, this unit appears as a Cardboard Box to your opponent. While inside the box this unit can move, attack and use skills as usual. Taking damage, attacking or using a skill will remove Cardboard Box and reveal the unit.
Death Effect: X
After this unit dies, X will trigger.
This unit controls three spaces around it. One space above, one space underneath and one space in the opponent’s direction. Enemy units on these defended fields can only move backwards or attack the Defender.
This unit deals X extra damage when attacking a Catalyst.
This unit can attack twice per turn. After its first attack, it keeps its remaining Moves.
This unit will not take retaliation damage when it kills a unit with an attack.
This unit can move and attack the turn it is played. It instantly gains Moves equal to its Speed.
Move Effect: X
Whenever this unit moves to a different field, X triggers.
When a unit is Neutered it loses all its special properties, leaving it with only its base Attack, Health and Speed.
Play Effect: X
After this unit has been played from the player’s hand, X will trigger. Play Effects will not trigger when the unit was summoned through other means.
This unit can attack from a range of X fields away. Units have a default Range of 1.
This unit will Heal for X Health at the start of your turn.
The next time this unit would take damage, the damage is blocked and Shielded fades.
Skill (X) (Y): Z
This unit can perform action Z at the cost of X Moves. This skill can be used every Y turns.
A stunned unit cannot move, attack or use skills. This effect normally wears off after 1 turn.
Summon Effect: X
After this unit appears on the board, X will trigger. Summon Effects will trigger when the unit was summoned through any means, unlike Play Effects.
So, who are we to claim we can pull off such a feat? We are Dysprosium and Silicon, two game developers with over 5 years of experience as a team. During this time, we've developed a framework that allows us to create games the way we like it. It's time to push it to the limit!
Our first game (Board Game Online) has already been played by over 1.5 million different people from all over the world. We've had to create a multi-server system to keep it running and we're re-using this technology for Catamancer. This allows us to create a game that's playable on multiple platforms with the greatest of ease!
We are ready to turn Catamancer into one of the best card games ever made. Will you give us this chance?
Risks and challenges
We have more than 5 years of experience in game development and we've learned more than enough in that time to know what we can and cannot handle. Catamancer is a project we *can* handle.
We have a *lot* of artists and will likely hire more once the project is funded. Even if several of our artists become unable to fulfill their commitments, we'll still have many to fall back on.
We've taken a pretty good margin by setting our launch date at July 2016. Even if we bump into obstacles, we'll likely still be able to reach our initial goal. Should things go terribly wrong, we can delay some of the less crucial features of the game and still hit our launch date.
If we bump into financial issues, we have our income from BGO to soften the blows, as well as reserve funds we can tap into. We are confident that the set goal is enough to complete the project as outlined and future development will have to be funded by the game's income.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
