What is Magnic Light?
Magnic Light is the first touchless dynamo bike light that works on pure aluminium wheels. A tiny 60g-light unit will generate never-ending bright light without any batteries, without wheel-contact, without cables, and without noticeable resistance. What sounds like a miracle is based on simple physical principles. It has nothing to do with perpetual motion machine concepts or pseudo-science. During our first Kickstarter-campaign of the original Magnic Light in February 2012, many could not believe this technology would actually work.
How does it work?
The key is so-called eddy current technology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddy_current): Energy is drawn from the rotating bicycle wheels without any physical contact, and thus without friction. Instead, eddy currents created by strong magnets generate electricity to power the lights (International Patent Pending PCT/EP/2012/001431). When the wheel spins, magnets inside the generator induce eddy currents with corresponding magnetic fields in the wheel, which in turn interact with the magnets in the generator. The resulting electricity will power your lights indefinitely without any environmentally harmful batteries or cumbersome cables. You will not feel any resistance as the lights send their bright beam ahead.
Is Magnic Light suitable for competition?
Two weeks before project end a german cycling team contacted us: The 4 "German Frauleins" from Hamburg. In June they will compete as a team in the most famous nonstop long distance race of the world, the Race Across America from US west to east coast- and they will compete with Magnic light illumination!
They try to be the first pure female team from Germany reaching the finish line of the Race accross America with 5000km length and time limit 9 days, which means 27km/h average speed. Illumination is required for cycling at night but until now competitors have used battery lights because dynamos cost too much valuable energy. It seems up until now noone has used a dynamo for this demanding race but with Magnic light this is possible because you don't feel the resistance. And we hope this is a good demonstration of the properties of the new Magnic Light iC: Tiny, lightweight, easy and robust. Only highest quality!
The main principle of Magnic Light is simple, but costly: Uncompromising efficiency in every aspect! This means, Magnic Light magnets have the highest known magnetization level. Magnic Light LEDs have the highest efficiency currently available. Magnic Light lenses have highest light yield for the driver. Finally, the Magnic Light body has the smallest size and weight possible for its purpose: Powerful light without any effort!
In 2013 Magnic Light was awarded with the ISPO Brandnew Award of ISPO Munich as winner of the category bike parts.
What's new in Magnic Light iC?
With Magnic Light iC we present a new exciting technology on Kickstarter: Microprocessor-controlled steady light + intelligent energy control + non-blinding light-technology.
You might wonder why we need a microprocessor for an additional steady light. This is necessary to keep efficiency at the highest level.
For a standard bicycle dynamo, energy loss caused by standard steady-light electronics (incl. rectifiers) is relatively insignificant compared to the bigger total energy consumption of the entire system. Magnic Light operates at a lower energetic level so these losses are not acceptable. Although traditional large dynamos employ more energy, the emitted light of Magnic Light features approximately the same luminosity - mainly for two reasons:
1.Speed optimized generator without lossy electronics
The Magnic Light microprocessor adapts the generator electronics to your cycling speed: This means that, starting at a speed of 3km/h to a speed above 30 km/h the generator works with high efficiency. In comparison, most standard dynamos have a very limited optimal speed range between 10 and 20 km/h.
2.Leds with 160 lumen per watt
The Magnic Light generator is tailored to the LEDs used, which reach almost 50% of the theoretically possible values- while good old standard systems barely attain 10-25 %:
Theoretically, the maximum white light you can obtain from 1 watt is appr. 350 lumen. However, good-quality LEDs only deliver about 40 lumen per watt (as used in many bicycle lights), which represents only 11% of the maximum. Light bulbs, on the other hand, only put out 10-15 lumen per watt, while theoretical maximum light possible is 685 lumen per watt (for green light). .
With high power LEDs one can reach appr. 80 lm/W, while the Cree LEDs used in Magnic Light deliver ~160 lumen per watt. This is possible because we feed each LED with less than 1 watt, which results in the ability to operate at temperatures below 35° C. This way, we harvest roughly 46% of the theoretical maximum white light, and hence 4 times more than standard LEDs.

For Magnic Light iC, we have redesigned our lenses to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. This was a complex task for the engineer, as we demanded to keep the same lens-size, same body-size, as well as the same beam-angle of 8 degrees. .
Why again on Kickstarter?
Our first Kickstarter project was a big success, and thanks to the help of our backers, we were able to build a worldwide production network starting from the ground up. We delivered a product of higher quality than we had ever expected. Thanks to Kickstarter, Magnic Light has become a well known, worldwide product. The technology we have created has the potential to dramatically change the bicycle market and furthermore revolutionize other industrial applications.
As a small start-up company we are facing a difficult situation. Production for the distributor market presents a much higher risk, it costs significantly more money, and follows entirely different rules from a Kickstarter campaign. We believe in the Kickstarter community and its ability to nurture quality over low-cost driven business tactics. If this Kickstarter project proves successful, we will be able to produce the best second generation Magnic Lights possible. In our first campaign, delivering such quality would have been impossible without the exceptional assistance of companies who believed in the potential of Magnic Light. Our teams in Asia, Europe, and the US work hard together on the development of Magnic Light. Many have become good friends along the way.

Magnic Light History
We started the production at home. Here you see me in front of our barn, where we have started the production of Magnic Light. I am filling the generator cores with glue before I carry them to final assembly in our neighboring city Bielefeld, at company Osnitron. They made the soldering and insertion of LEDs and lenses, because it was too much work for me after I tried to do it on my own in the beginning.
In the last months we got great feedback and many requests for a steady light version. Standard solutions with rectifier & capacitor would cost too much efficiency for Magnic Light. So we decided to do it better and keep efficiency high by using ananoWatt microprocessor technology.
We are convinced that a good product needs fair conditions for employees and for its customers. For you, as a Kickstarter backer, this means we can offer rewards at prices far below the market level (approx. 40%), because we can ship to you directly.

Quality & Reliability
Magnic Light has more than proven its reliability throughout the last 9 months. More than one million kilometers have been illuminated with Magnic Light by the growing community. Out of the thousands of Magnic Light sold, only 9 units were exchanged, mainly due to mounting / adapter problems, which we improved in the new version.
We have succesfully produced Magnic Light in 2013. Most of the tools for injection molding can still be used for Magnic Light iC. This means there only remain a few uncertainties in the scheduling. In a worst case scenario, delays in production or transport may be a question of a few weeks, but not months.

Risks and challenges
We used Kickstarter to launch Magnic Light last year, and found 483 backers who made our dream come true. The experience of our first run will help us in the realization of this project. However, as a small company we are dependent on handful of people. Thus, our timeline depends on good health and the circumstances we are faced with in life. With that in mind, we have left nothing to chance and used and tested all production and delivery routes successfully throughout the past 12 months. We are aware that with the invention of Magnic Light, we have created a technology that will prevail with or without us.
