What is The Small Silver Speedster?
The Small Silver Speedster is set in 1957, just as Porsche begins to gain its cult status and domination in sports car racing. It's the story of a father and his young daughter as they fly to New York City to pick up their new 356 A Speedster at Max Hoffman's iconic dealership (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright). While there, they enjoy a chance meeting with racing pioneer Denise McCluggage (whose path they will later cross on the track!). The pair then break in the Speedster with a cross-country drive home to California via Route 66. They prepare the Speedster for the emerging sports car racing scene of the 1950s – as iconic tracks like Riverside, Laguna Seca, and others open across the country. And together, they drive the car to its first race...
It's historical fiction, rigorously researched, then boiled down into a fascinating story that both kids and grownups will love.
I’ve set a milestone at $50,000. If we hit this milestone, I’ll create a second version with revised illustrations and text. When the book ships, you'll have the choice of the Father/Daughter or Father/Son version of the book (or some of each depending on the reward level you select).
Research & Reference
I've purchased years worth of 1950s sports car and racing magazines –– AutoSport, Motor Sport, Auto Speed and Sport –– everything I can to have a complete picture of the advent of the sport. I've read reviews and tests of the "NEW Porsche Speedster!". I've spent hours searching the archives of The Revs Institute – just looking at Riverside and Laguna Seca in the '50s. I’ve been in contact with Porsche and have their support. I've researched Max Hoffman, Porsche’s entry into the USA, Denise McCluggage’s racing career and her wins in Porsches. I’ve looked at the programs and tickets and maps of the tracks as they got started – and how they differ from today...
Just like The Little Red Racing Car and The Greatest Race, this book is going to be a stickler for accuracy – with the added emotion of a family story.
There are three primary reward tiers: the Base, the Super, and the Carrera. Just like the cars, the higher the reward tier, the more features you get.
There is one more exclusive and limited reward level: the Patron. In addition to every other reward from the campaign, Patrons' books will be embellished with a cast metal “Patron” badge on the cover and a signature plate inside. They will also receive an original piece of art from the creation of the book, a 24x36" print of sketches from the creation of the book, and a 24x36" Giclee print of a finished illustration from the book.
Since 2012, I’ve put my decades of experience in Design and Creative Direction to work, creating these two books. They've been well received.
I’m a passionate car guy who originally saw the need for authentic automotive stories when I began looking for books to share with my son. I’m an award-winning Designer and Design Director who’s worked on numerous branding, marketing, and social media campaigns for the Fortune 500, and who — thanks to my son (and to you) — is no longer wasting my time on such things.
I’m the founder and sole designer of Carpe Viam Productions. Ideating, sketching and designing an ever-growing collection of stuff for “automotive enthusiasts present and future”.
Risks and challenges
There are always challenges that arise, but this being my third book, I am coming in prepared.
For the first time since I began writing books, I have the story completely mapped out before starting the writing process. I’m very excited about this, as I believe it will equip me to hit every date for the delivery of this book by the holidays of 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
