This project started about 18 months ago after realizing that most device stands and mounts are one-trick acts; they have only one use and work with only one device. So, the Gekko Stand's initial purpose was to support multiple devices without having to switch out a case or bolt on an accessory in order to do so.
The first solid prototype was made out of a gooseneck hose with a neodymium magnet on one end and a clamp on the other. It worked, but we knew we weren't even close to where we wanted to be. The stand still had many limitations and we were determined to improve.
After receiving feedback and a lot of brainstorming, our focus shifted towards improving the arm. A gooseneck hose or soft flexible pipe wasn't going to cut it. Sure, it held devices, but we wanted something that you could bend, wrap, coil, straighten, and make any size you want. Our solution became the ball-and-socket-joint arm.
Finally, we had a big problem that needed to be addressed: people generally aren't comfortable putting magnets around their electronics. So, we explored a few different options and discovered that cutting-edge NanoSuction technology was the answer we were looking for. Not only is it stronger than the neodymium, but it also can work with more devices, as well as on the opposing end of the arm. After experimenting with different materials and assembly structures, we soon reached a perfect balance of strength, size, and structure. We now have an extremely solid, versatile, and elegant product that we are proud of, and we can't wait for you to get one too!

We have several functional prototypes made from hand molds, 3D printing, stereolithography and laser sintering, but in order to do our first production run we have to use injection molding. The Gekko Stand requires molds that make three different parts: one part is the ball and socket joint, the second part is the ball-end pad backing, and the third is the socket-end pad backing. In order to do injection molding we need to get the tooling done on two mold bases. Luckily, we've already purchased the bases and all we need to do is pay for the tooling. So, we figured Kickstarter would be the perfect place to have this Jerry Maguire moment, "Help me, help you, help me!" We know you're going to love the Gekko Stand and we've already loved the process of developing it so far... Now all we need is you!
Risks and challenges
We have done our best to prepare for the inherent risks that are associated with the design and manufacturing process that we could encounter during the project's course. There are a few potential risks, but we're more than qualified to overcome them successfully if they appear.
As with any Kickstarter design project, time is of the essence. It is frustrating to the backers of a project if their product doesn't get delivered within the estimated timeframe. Although we have everything from manufacturing, packaging, distribution and all of our downstream operations lined up and ready to go, our pledge to you is to keep the communication line open. If for any reason we experience delays during the project, you will hear about it promptly on our Kickstarter updates, as well as on GekkoStand.com. We will also be sharing general info along the way, and milestones that we reach during the process.
The Gekko Stand has very tight tolerances between the ball and socket joints. This is the key to the articulating arm, and if the tolerance is too tight or not tight enough, the stand would not be functional. We have several prototypes that have been molded, laser sintered, and 3D printed. All of them work and we have reached the perfect tolerance level to balance maximum stability with ease of adjustment. Our final 3D CAD files have gone through digital feasibility studies, nylon laser sintering, and all we need to do is pay for the tooling on the mold bases so we can start our first commercial production run.
Suppliers can be an issue during the manufacturing process, but we have all of the supplies we need onsite at our production facility in Reno. The lead tool designer has over 30 years of experience and the facility we have agreed to do business with has been operating in Reno since 1977. They have a full turn-key operation and the ability to produce 8,000,000 units/year with just one production mold for the Gekko Stand.
