Thank you all so much for your support of "Dwell."
We'd like to let you know we've added the gift of a digital download of one of the performances to all Reward levels. This way, those of you who can't be at the performance in person can still be a part of the experience. We'll let you know the details when we send out information about your other rewards.
Clint Edwards, Lauren Welliehausen and Phoebe Reeves all grew up together in Ballston Spa, NY. They all graduated from Ballston Spa High School and went on to study music in college--except Phoebe jumped ship and became an English major instead.
Now, some (ahem...quite a few) years later, they have reunited to create and perform a pair of art-song cycles inspired by their childhood home. It began when Lauren, a soprano who now lives in Germany with her family, asked Clint to write something special for her. Clint called Phoebe and asked if she'd like to collaborate with him on an art song. That art song become "Hiraeth," a twenty-minute song cycle for soprano and string quartet, which premiered in Germany in June of 2018.
Building on the success of "Hiraeth," Clint and Phoebe went to work on a second piece, this time for soprano, baritone, and string quartet. "Dwell" explores the town of Ballston Spa in its earliest years, through the eyes of woman and her garden. It is also haunted by the voice of this woman's descendant as he travels there in an attempt to understand his past and those who came before. Like "Hiraeth" before it, much of the texture and imagery comes from the natural world and the landscapes that surround people's daily lives.
We have four concerts scheduled for this premiere, which will include both works: Saratoga Springs NY, New Jersey, and two in Germany. Here on Kickstarter, we're working to raise the funds to pay for the musicians' airline fare to travel to Germany, as well as to defray costs for these four performances.
Dates and details of each concert will be posted here as they evolve.
First performance: Saratoga Methodist Church, Friday October 18th
Second performance: New Jersey, Saturday October 19th
Third performance: Hildesheim, Germany, Friday November 1st
Fourth performance: Völksen, Germany, Saturday November 2nd
Risks and challenges
Music is work, and musicians are workers. It is our hope that all the musicians performing Dwell will receive fair compensation for their efforts. Of course, making art is a joy, but when it is also a livelihood, it must be sustainable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
