About this project
Finally, you’re free to play golf whenever you want, wherever you can, regardless of lifestyle, trunk space or the lack thereof. Our new, fully functional, high-performance set of DV8 golf clubs does everything traditional clubs can, plus one thing they cannot: let you golf without obstacles.
Because traditional golf clubs are bulky, heavy and cumbersome, they create obstacles that all too often force you to either sacrifice golf entirely or sacrifice your other lifestyle passions and pursuits to practice or play.
Urban transit, let alone a cramped apartment, is an obstacle.
Lack of trunk space is an obstacle.
For bikers, cyclists and scooter riders, having no trunk space at all is definitely an obstacle.
Forget the traditional, regulation set of 14 different club heads with 14 different shafts. DV8 lets you carry those same 14 club heads but with only 1 or 2 shafts. We simply vary the shaft length from our patented quick-change coupler to club head, keeping each club true to its regular length and performance.
First we reinvented your clubs, then we reinvented your bag. No bigger or heavier than your computer backpack with customizable, colorful, front-panel styling. Size, weight, function, convenience, style – the DV8 bag has no baggage.
This patented DV8 stainless steel quick-change coupler is the heart of it all. Forged from 5 years of meticulous design, innovation and craftsmanship, it allows DV8 clubs to swing, hit, feel and perform like traditional clubs. The unique DV8 coupler also lets you change club heads in under 3 seconds. The end result?
When not in use, DV8 club heads fit securely into labeled slots in the bag’s precision engineered block of EVA foam – the same lightweight, durable foam found in high-end camera/lens cases. As shown, shaft sections store vertically in the protective foam block and are accessed at the top of the bag.
When you arrive at the range or golf course, simply assemble the two part DV8 shaft. That’ll take you all of 5 seconds and you won’t need to disassemble the shaft until you’ve completed play. While most golfers can tighten this coupling by hand, we provide an easy to use tool that will give those that need it a little extra leverage.
With your shaft assembled, you’re now ready to practice or play. Club heads go in and out of the DV8 bag quickly and easily and heads can be interchanged on the shaft in under 3 seconds. No obstacle to that.
Finally, DV8 clubs are just as easy on your wallet as they are on your back. Because most golfers practice with only 4 to 5 clubs or play rounds with up to 14, we will allow buyers at retail to build the DV8 set that works best for them (instead of forcing people to buy prepackaged configurations that might be too much or too little).
At launch, we’ll offer a range of set configurations for those who know what they want but for others, we’ll provide the flexibility to add heads individually to create custom practice or playing sets. Cost of equipment is a big obstacle to more people picking up this wonderful game. DV8 however has found a way to eliminate even that obstacle.
We were born in a fight next to an airport taxi.
It was 2009. Four men were arguing, taxi trunk open and their tee time in jeopardy. Around them, all their golf bags, luggage and brief cases that wouldn’t fit. Tempers flared. Somebody would have to miss the round.
Nearby, DV8 Sports founder and inventor Pat Brady looked on.
Ironically, Pat’s not a golfer. But he’s a heralded engineer, inventor and passionate problem-solver. Witness his 13 US patents and 6 pending US patents on other inventions. He knew that if he could revolutionize call routing and telephony customer service, enable the detection of emotion in speech and be on the forefront of energy harvesting from nano-antenna technology, he could certainly make golf clubs less cumbersome.
An idea quickly took root. An idea centered on stainless steel coupling devices, a single shaft and a golf bag like nothing in the history of golf.
But Pat also knew what he didn’t know. So he joined forces with his friend and partner in several other successful ventures, Don Akerberg, who’s an avid golfer. They knew that finding a way to make clubs travel smaller was easy. Making them feel, swing, hit and perform like traditional clubs, well, that would be difficult.
It would take four evolutions of coupler design, metallurgy and machining, plus numerous combinations of shaft and head design.
While Don knew golf, Pat and Don both knew they didn’t know the business of golf. So insert Richard Stamper as President/CEO, a friend of a friend of Don and veteran of Callaway Golf and former president of Srixon Sports and SkyCaddie. With a team now in place, DV8 Sports was formed and prototype clubs and bags were soon built, refined and tested.
So it wasn’t just an idea for more compact clubs that was born in that 2009 airport argument. It was the vision of golf without obstacles and a collaboration of old friends and new that would ultimately realize Pat's vision - and come to be known as "The (Pat) BRADY BUNCH"!
Are shaft flex and durability obstacles? Matrix Composites, the #1 metal wood shaft supplier in golf created a custom graphite shaft exclusively for DV8 clubs. Then they put it to their test and 10,000 cycles later, no obstacles due to shaft flex and durability.
Are distance and accuracy obstacles? You be the judge. We put our clubs to the test at Golf Labs, a leading independent golf testing facility in San Diego, CA., on no less than a golfing robot. The results speak for themselves.
First, we tested traditionally shafted DV8 clubs (no couplers) against three of golf’s leading brands to baseline our heads and shafts against the industry's best. The results showed no statistically significant difference. In fact, the DV8 5-iron was equal to or better than all brands in overall distance.
Next, we compared the DV8 driver and 5-iron (with couplers) against these same three brands and again, our 5 iron was near the top in performance and our driver showed only a minor (~3%) overall distance impact. So repeat after us: “performance is not an obstacle.”
We’ve designed, refined, honed, crafted, built and rebuilt. We’ve tested and retested. We’ve even had a low-handicap, 24 year-old 115 mph swing speed golfer hitting balls daily, in divot-taking, club-to-ground contact conditions. (He’d hit nearly 10,000 shots with one set at the time of launching Kickstarter). For the average golfer playing 2 rounds a month, that's like 5 years of shots or far more when you consider most golfers swing at less than 90 mph.
Perhaps nothing validates DV8 Sports more than what Rick Smith thinks. As a top PGA Tour Instructor whose students have included names like Michelson, Nicklaus and Norman, Rick’s reputation hangs on his judgment and recommendations. Translation: he has to be knowledgeable, honest and true to what’s good for golfers.
“Whether you travel by subway, bike or sports car, DV8 Sports makes it easier to have your clubs with you, ready to use at any opportunity. That’s important, because the more you practice and play, the better golfer you’ll become and the more fun you’ll have.”
- Rick Smith PGA Tour Instructor
DV8 clubs will be available in three (3) shaft flexes, right hand and left hand and in shaft lengths that will fit golfers of any height, male or female, young or old.
We’ve been developing DV8 clubs and bag for 5 years now. The clubs you see featured on this page and in our video are real, working and production-ready, to which we are making final tweaks.
With your support, we can bring Golf Without Obstacles to people whose lifestyles and other passions won’t easily accommodate their love of the game. Our target is for a full-scale launch in August, 2014.
Your contribution will help fund:
- inventory to fill Kickstarter orders
- plans & inventory for a full-scale product launch later this summer
Thank you again Kickstarters and we look forward to seeing you at the golf course!
