ExtraCore is a 1" x 1" 22 I/O pin Arduino Compatible. It's 1.7 grams and 16mhz of tiny Arduino style coolness.
Note: This project is Creative Commons "unported" licensed. That's fully open source hardware. Despite some lingering language about "non-commercial" this project is completely open source. Lets make the world we want rather than fearing the world we live in.
Hi, I am really happy you came to check out this Kickstarter project.
First, I want to make sure you know what Arduino is. If you already know, skip ahead to "What ExtraCore is"
A word about Arduino
Arduino is a small computer with input and output pins that allow it to interact with sensors, electronics, computers and even the internet. Along with home CNC milling and 3d printing I believe it's about to set traditional manufacturing on it's ear. It allows anyone who can use a computer to bring electronic ideas to life. It's got a great big following and tons of examples and active community members. If you want to get started with Arduino, check out the official home page at www.arduino.cc
What ExtraCore is
ExtraCore is an Arduino Compatible board created by Dustin Andrews and released under a Creative Commons "unported" license. If you think Arduino is cool but wish your development board was small and cheap enough to leave behind in your projects, this board is for you. If you have a project that's pushing the limit of one processing core and you want a cost and space effective way to add another, this project is for you.
Here are some of the features:
- Creative Commons open licensed hardware
- 1 inch (25.4mm) tall
- 1 1/8th inch (22mm) wide
- 1.7 grams
- Low pass filter on AVCC
- Bread Board friendly
- Compatible with the same 5v FTDI used with the Pro Mini.
- All Digital and Analog pins from the Atmega chip are broken out to the edge and laid out in order.
These boards are very streamlined to reduce size and cost. They require an additional bit of hardware to talk to your computer. A 5V FTDI breakout board or FTDI cable will work, just the same as the Pro-Mini. They don't have a built in power regulator like most other Arduino's and compatibles. That means you can choose your own power regulator or it runs fine off a USB cable. Like the Lily Pad there is no over voltage or reverse voltage protection. Be mindful whenever you hook one up.
The state of the project so far
The design is ready to manufacture, backers on Kickstarter will get to vote on the remaining details. Several prototype boards have been created and tested successfully. There is a detailed Instructable that was featured in the Instructable newsletter and on Spark Fun, Hack A Day and Global Geek News. We are now ready to start a manufacturing run. We just need the money and people who want them.
The Mission (What the money is for)
The mission is to make Ardunio compatible embedded micro-controllers that are small and cost effective. I want to share my creation with everyone who wants one. In order to get a bulk discount on circuit board manufacturing you have to make order at least 500. That is this project's goal. If you want the materials in kit form to put together and load your own bootloader you can get kits from this project. If you want some manufactured and tested boards, you can get them here as well. If we get over funded, we will just make that many more boards. I will use any "left over" money to help defray the cost of the prototype boards and electronics already purchase and get the product launched outside of Kickstarter.
I want to get the boards manufactured and in your hands as quickly as possible. So if you want some boards, please donate and consider asking your friends to get some. If you don't pledge or not you can help by "Liking" our Facebook page and ask your friends to like it too.
A note about the kits
Please read the Instructable before you sign up for a kit. It's a great DIY project, but it requires surface mount soldering and one component has hidden pads. You will also have to burn your own boot-loader, which requires some additional hardware. The kits are great for DIY people who already know or want to get into surface mount soldering. If you just want a small Arduino Compatible, stick with the assembled and tested boards.
Thank you very much.
If you don't want or need an Arduino but want to support the project, here is what the t-shirts look like.
They are onsale at this URL: https://shop.ruggedcircuits.com/index.php…
Please add enough to cover postage to your country from Redmond, Washington 98052. The boards weigh 1.7 grams each. Packages will be around 1lb total with padding. Postal rates are $10 to Canada, Australia, UK and Germany. It's probably $10 to your country unless you have reason to believe it is hard to ship stuff to you from the USA.
Choose 10 as your reward and add $9.50 for each additional kit or $14.50 for each additional board. Then drop me a line with how many you want so I can be sure to order the right number.
