We think, that everybody should be able to create maps with DUNGEONFOG.   

After launch, we will offer Free Access with limited cloud-space and limited features to everyone and those of you who join our campaign will be the very first with access to the platform. You'll be able to draw maps using our basic tools, props and textures and you can share your maps and download them as JPG.

If you'd like to have access to all of our features, upload your own textures and props and use our advanced tools, like the GM notes, or the possibility to copy and edit maps from other artists, then you should consider backing us at the Bronze level or higher for Premium Access

DUNGEONFOG Premium 
Once we have finished BETA, DUNGEONFOG will offer Premium Access based on a subscription model, that will range around 4,90€ per month or 49,90€ per year. This will cover our costs on servers and allow us to continue developing the platform and adding cool new features.

Stretch Goal #4 - unlocked

A completely new approach to ambient sounds & sound effects. 

We have teamed up with Reinhard Schmid, an Austrian composer, who wrote his master thesis on the influence of sounds and music for role playing games. Rei developed a system to generate endless, seamless and never repeating ambient soundscapes based on items, textures and generated room size. Ambient sounds are automatically created without any additional work.

Instead of painfully adding sounds, noises, effects and music to a playlist in external tools, you can now handle all of that directly from you game master notes. They are exactly where you need them.

Immersive ambient sound

By placing props in a room, you automatically create an immersive ambient sound for that room based on the items you’ve used. This soundstream is generated dynamically based on random parameters and your room’s content.

  • Add props to your room to automatically generate an unique soundscape.
  • You can easily edit the sound of a prop while placing it on the map.
  • Add audio containers to your map to give every room additional music.
  • You can also use the audio container to place one shot sounds that you can trigger when it’s time.
  • Every sound or music played will be mixed together automatically, so you don’t have to worry about every single sound source. All you need is one intensity control for each room.
  • Foreshadow rooms by playing a dampened version of that rooms soundscape.
  • For every new prop that we release as part of the DGNFOG PREMIUM prop sets, we will add sound to it. (Of course, only if it naturally emits sound.)
  • You are used to your tabletop music collection or sound collection? You can add your own audio to your map or your rooms. Just make sure, that you legally own it and be aware, that only DUNGEONFOG sounds will be shared when you bring your map to the platform.
  • If you don’t want any audio, don’t use it. You can activate or deactivate this feature whenever you like.

Here’s an example:

So let’s assume that you are building a kitchen and want it to have an ambient sound:

You add a stove, a cooking pot and an old faucet from the DUNGEONFOG prop list to your room.

Each prop inherits a unique sound to it: 

  • Stove: crackling fire 
  • Cooking pot: bubbling sound 
  • Leaking faucet: dripping water

DUNGEONFOG recognizes all three sound sources, mixes them together, plays different samples in random order and creates a reverb based on the room size and texture. You've created an individual, endless and non disturbing ambient sound for your kitchen.

Directly in the editor, you can preview the ambient sound of your kitchen and adjust its volume, to preset it for your actual game.

Your party arrives in an adjacent room. 

Even if your party has not entered the kitchen, you can foreshadow the sounds of it, by simply activating the foreshadow function in your GM-notes. We will automatically adjust volume and equalization to make it sound damp. So if your party’s perception check is high enough, they can hear the kitchen from where they currently are.

In your GM-Notes you can decide, if the ambient sound of each room is played automatically when the room is revealed. You can also add one-shot effects, like the growling of a creature or the shattering of glass once the room is revealed, or an event is triggered (chest is opened, trap is activated).

No more DJing.

All you need are your digital game master notes, that you can have available on your tablet, smartphone or laptop. If you have activated the ambient sound for your map, you will find a new controller in your digital notes to foreshadow adjacent rooms, play/pause the rooms sound manually adjust the intensity play one-shots manually play/pause/loop the rooms music.

When you created your map, it does not only look great, it also sounds great.

We will add 25 additional props to all settings, so that each unlocked setting will consist of 125 props.

Dynamic Lighting
We will add dynamic light sources to your maps to cast shadows and enhance the design of your maps with additional light.

+25 props to all existing settings. We will add 25 additional props to all settings, so that each unlocked setting will consist of 150 props.

NPC/Monster Database

We will add a database including all OGL (Open Game License) Monsters from a game of your choice (D&D, Pathfinder, D20, etc.). The monster database will help you to prefill your dungeons with monsters. Or to add predefined statblocks in your game master notes. All statblocks will stay editable, so you can change them on the fly.

Hex Grids 

Once we reach that stretch goal, we will implement hex grids to the editor core function. When you create a map, you can select if you want to use a square or hex grid and the snap tool will adjust accordingly. Snap-to-Hex so to say!

Multi-Level dungeons 

Instead of creating a new map for each level of our dungeon, you can draw the whole dungeon in one take. Simply add a new level above or below the one that you have drawn and use the previous map as a blueprint.

Isometric dungeon view 

Once we have implemented the multi-level mechanic, we can make use of that to render dungeons in isometric view. To help you arrange your isometric levels, we will add an additional iso-level editor, where you can arrange your levels and draw connection lines.

For the last six months, we've spent every minute of our spare time (well...outside of actually playing D&D) developing DUNGEONFOG. We've made a lot of progress, but we'd like to be able to have all of the features we planned ready and available for you by the end of 2017. That would mean we'd have to take a break from our day jobs and dedicate ourselves full time to DUNGEONFOG. With your support, we can make this happen!


 

 


Like you, we love being game masters. Preparation for a session is all part of the fun — you can spend hours fantasizing about the next adventure you will take your party on. For us, we noticed, most of that time is usually spent drawing maps and writing GM notes. So we thought... why not create a tool that does that part for you!

In 2015, we decided to start a D&D office game that is still ongoing to this day. As graphic designers, we have Photoshop at our disposal, so, after a while we started to create our own maps in the office.

Nonetheless, Photoshop is not a map-drawing tool, and there is a lot of room for improvement to make drawing maps even more convenient. Also, we know that not everyone is a graphic designer that owns or has experience with Photoshop. So we decided to do something about it.

We wanted to create a tool that is like Photoshop, but even better when it comes to drawing maps and available to everyone. As the we began to develop the idea more, we realized that we could kill two birds with one stone by addressing each room as an object with its own properties. That made it possible to dynamically generate a text describing the room.

In other words, make a GM-note based on the picture we draw.

That's when we knew we had something exceptional, that should be available to all of you!

Risks and challenges

DUNGEONFOG is our baby. This project has the potential to completely change the lives of all of us here at the studio, so we're putting our all into it.

We've been very open with the development on our own blog and we take comments and concerns from our community very seriously. In fact, a lot of the new changes in the editor came from tester suggestions. We will continue to take and implement suggestions long after this Kickstarter campaign ends.

We are trying to make everything compatible with as many operating systems & browsers as possible and eventually with mobile devices as well. Due to the use of newer tech, some older computers and browsers will not be able to support all features. Please try the demo to see if your computer has problems running the editor (just keep in mind, that the demo is pre-alpha and there will perfomance updates for alpha and beta).

We are aiming for fairly regular build updates with monthly intervals, and the progress can be seen by all. When we say we will try to include something, we really will find a way to try it. We will try our hardest to make DUNGEONFOG a tool everyone will enjoy and will remember.

Web development isn't always smooth sailing and there are a lot of uncertainties (especially the programming part), so that's why we added a bit of a cushion to our timeline and chose February 2018 for the release date. This will give us a bit of breathing room so that we can get it to you on schedule or maybe even earlier.

If it comes out early, it'll be a pleasant surprise. But in case we have a little delay (though unlikely), a bit more of your patience will be highly appreciated.
