Pure summer, all year round
Pure summer, all year round
Latest information about this project : dshott.co.uk/pool
Introducing our next everyday object : A miniature swimming pool drinking glass.
A minimal design with a little touch of lovelyness, to give you the positive feeling that comes with summertime, all year round.
A frosted area around the glass creates the pool “wall”, and a gold ladder appears to wrap over it. A blue circle is printed on the bottom, which then gently fades up into the frosted wall as a halftone gradient. As a final detail, a reversed-out depth gauge runs up the edge of the frosted wall.
Expertly made and decorated in Japan, each glass is decorated with six sets of decals before firing in a kiln, which bonds them to the soda-lime glass.
The boxes are constructed from premium E-flute cardboard, made locally in Bristol, UK. The design is simple, neat and easy to wrap, making a great gift! ^^
75mm diameter, 81mm high, 220g, hand wash only. (In box = 90 x 71 x 86mm, 256g).
*Pool glass/pool glasses should not be used by the pool, due to the risk of broken glass.
My name’s Duncan Shotton, I’m a British designer running a small design studio in Bristol with my wife Nozomi. We’ve already completed four successful kickstarter campaigns.
Focusing on designing happiness into everyday experiences, we use themes such as play, wit and illusion to create tools and objects that converge simple ideas with serious product design.
Thanks for viewing, reading, sharing and pledging!
After seeing “pool” imagery starting to micro-trend in the illustration/art world a couple of years ago, I started to think of ways I could embed the iconic pool and ladder combo into an everyday object. Pool glass was soon a simple sketch and a rough paper prototype and after a little more refinement, I pitched the design to a Japanese company in the hope they would license the design from me. They explored it for a while by making the first glass prototype and pitching it to their retailer customers across Japan. After a while (more than a year!) they decided not to pursue it’s development. They only sell products to retailers (who demand high profit margins), so it either wasn't worth it for them, or the retail price ended up too high. The classic middle-man idea destroyer model.
Determined not to let the idea get brushed aside, I decided to take on the project myself as a studio original. We're less focused on making high profits, and more on making ideas happen, plus by selling directly to end users (you guys!) we can keep costs down.
I tried to source a UK based manufacturer, but could only seem to find extremely specialist makers, or budget “We print your logo on a pint glass mate” kind of companies. I had the same issue in mainland Europe. So, I contacted the Japanese makers I had been working with before, who could produce a high quality product at a non-ridiculous cost. Starting last year, I’ve been through three more rounds of sampling to get the glasses up to the excellent quality we expect.
The boxes are to be made locally in England, the labels in Germany, and the assembly & packing will be done by us as usual.
Pool Glass is now ready for production which is why we’re back on kickstarter in order to meet minimum order quantities and finally make these beauties a reality! ^^
Special Thanks : Everyone who backs this project, Nozomi, Usui-san, Miyuki-san, Owen, Craig, Nakayama-san, Moriyama-san, Shimada-san, Hoshino-san, Jerome, Big Pete, Clive, August, Mum, Dad, Carol & Nigel.
When we were based in Tokyo, we always used Japanese postage stamps. They were loved and appreciated by our kickstarter supporters and online shop customers alike. Since we’ve been in the UK, we don’t have access to lovely off-the-shelf stamps, so we’ve decided to make our own. It took us a while, but we finally found a maker that can produce our simple pool design on a silver-metallic stock so the ladder shines a little. We'll be including them on the packages we send to you, and also supplying a couple to you on backing paper so you can decorate your own packages.
We’ve already invested a huge amount of time, effort and money into this project.
Launching this project on kickstarter is not just to help pay for the production cost. We’re here because we feel close to the kickstarter community, and know it’s the best platform to share our progress and story with you.
Our studio is only a 3.5 x 4 meter space, and is already jam-packed with tools, parts and boxes of materials that we need to keep our little business ticking over. Our website might make what we do look easy and fun, but behind that cool exterior every project is a leap into the unknown and takes months of hard work to bring it to life.
Even with great platforms like kickstarter, it's still incredibly difficult for independent designers and makers like us to bring physical products to your door.
By backing this project, you are essentially making a pre-order. You’ll be the first to get your hands on the products on offer, and more importantly, be part of the founding community of people that got this project off the ground. We’ll also love you forever.

A kickstarter survey will be sent after funding is complete to retrieve delivery addresses and product selections if applicable. Approximate USD($) and JPY(￥) pledge amount is provided below for reference only. Not all rewards are shown at relative scale.
For more info on any of the items listed, check dshott.co.uk
We’ve also developed a silver-ladder version of Pool Glass. If we can reach £38k, we’ll add it as an option (and hopefully everyone will want an even division of both! ^^)
The Kickstarter interface allows only one shipping type per country, per reward.
Delivery is included in the “Quick Dip”, “Kickin’ Catch Up Set”, “Studio Originals” and “Pool Party” tiers only.
For all other tiers, once you select your reward, you will be presented with the price for Standard Delivery. Standard Delivery is the cheapest option but is untracked & uninsured.
UK Standard Delivery is +£3 (all applicable tiers)
International Standard Delivery is +£8 for “Single Swimmer” & “Cool Couple” tiers
International Standard Delivery is +£10 for “Dive and Dine Table Set” tiers
Backers will be given the opportunity to upgrade their rewards delivery service to Registered Delivery (which includes basic tracking and insurance) after the funding period has finished, for an additional £5. (option will be presented in the kickstarter survey and payable via PayPal).
Neither Duncan Shotton or the studio can take responsibility for items posted with the Standard Delivery option that are subsequently lost in transit. (But luckily, this hardly ever happens ^_^)
THE FINAL WORD
Thank you for your pledge in advance, and for sharing this campaign with as many people as you can, through word of mouth, social media and email. Your support means a great deal to our small business.

Risks and challenges
Every project has it's challenges but you can see from our portfolio we have a lot of experience designing products and coordinating their manufacture. We also have great experience in order management and fulfilment. Since 2011, we’ve successfully processed and delivered more than 5,000 orders, to customers all over the world via our online shop. On top of that, we now have 4 successful kickstarter projects under our belts (search "Rainbow Pencils”, “Sticky Page Markers”, “Soy Shape” or “Planet Pins”) which gives us further capability to plan and execute this one too.
All four of our previous Kickstarter projects have delivered all rewards as planned, and we don't have any plan to let that record slip now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
