Hold the entire solar system in the palm of your hand with this unique set of planet push pins. Add a bit of outer-space to your home & office space.
The 8 planet shapes are moulded in the UK over german-made, black steel pins, then sent to Tokyo where they are painstakingly brush painted by hand and assembled into their serial-numbered, polished-acrylic display cases.
Also available are single Moon pins, cast by hand in concrete by our friends in Taiwan, and assembled by us in Tokyo.
My name’s Duncan Shotton, I’m a British designer running a small design studio in Tokyo with my wife Nozomi. We’ve already completed 3 successful kickstarter campaigns.
Focusing on designing happiness into everyday experiences, we use themes such as play, wit and illusion to create tools and objects that converge simple ideas with serious product design.
Thanks for viewing, reading, sharing and pledging!
THE MOON & #Make100
In January, kickstarter announced their #Make100 project. Anxious to get involved, we wondered how we could incorporate the concept into our Planet Pins project, which we were already planning to run this year. We decided to produce a super special concrete-cast moon pin to complement the main set. The first 100 moon pins will be hand-signed, serial numbered and feature the Kickstarter “K” logo on the reverse. They are available only in the ltd #Make100 reward tier.
Each moon has a number of tiny craters, including a small arrangement reflecting the famous “the man in the moon” image. The flag of the USA is printed on the card insert that is set behind each pin, so it appears as if in its iconic setting, lanced into the moon’s surface, on a backdrop of starry, starry cosmos.
We met Taiwanese concrete artisans Himi and Yao whilst exhibiting together with designboom mart in 2014. They run a small studio in Tainan, specialising in the hand-casting of small concrete-based items. They’ve already helped us make a few moon samples and are set to continue with production if the project is a success, in which case we plan to visit them and share their work and the making process with you! ^^
Our first venture into transforming the standard push pin format into an object of desire came in 2012 with our limited-edition Real Boy Push Pins (sold out). Then in 2013 & 2014, we ran successful kickstarter campaigns for Rainbow Pencils and Sticky Page Markers, supported by thousands of you who share our passion for turning mundane objects into extraordinary tools.
Nearly 2 years ago we started thinking about new push pins ideas and soon after the first rough sketch of Planet Pins landed on a page, we started to get excited about how badass it would be to hold the entire solar system in the palm of your hand.
We initially pitched the idea to a Japanese company who turned it down when their research into manufacturing it cheaply in China proved too expensive to meet their profit margins. As with many of our projects, we weren’t going to give up there, and decided to go down the incredibly strenuous, but reliable route of producing it ourselves as a studio original.
We’ve already produced the injection-mould tooling and produced the first batch of pins in the UK, working with the same awesome team in Cornwall (south-west England) that helped us produce real boy push pins. The planets are moulded in a base colour of either sea-blue or bright yellow, over black, German-steel pins. The rest of the colours and details are added by hand in Tokyo, by my wife and I. We use enamel paints and small model-making brushes, and finish each piece with a final coat of clear, semi-gloss lacquer for a more consistent and durable finish. They’re then assembled (or ‘put into orbit’) into their display case, which we finally stamp the base of with a unique serial number.
The display cases are made in China and have been the hardest thing about this project. Even for this seemingly simple design, it’s taken more than a year, and 5 rounds of samples to finally get the cases up to the excellent quality we expect.
It’s taken a long time for us to get to this stage, and the painting process is and will continue to be incredibly labour intensive. We hope our supporters can understand and share our passion for this project enough to get behind it by pledging on kickstarter.
Special Thanks : Everyone who backs this project, Nozomi, Francis, Lisa, Hannah, Alex, Himi & Yao, Mr.Moriyama, Donna, Sk'p, Takashi & Mayu, Fab Cafe Shibuya, Surangkhana, Hawken.

We’ve already invested a huge amount of time, effort and money into this project, and have got through a large amount of the painting work.
Launching this project on kickstarter is not just to help pay for the production cost. We’re here because we feel close to the kickstarter community, and know it’s the best platform to share our progress and story with you.
Our studio is only a 3.5 x 5 meter space, and is already filled with boxes and boxes of our other products and materials. Our website gives the perception of success and stability, but in reality it’s still incredibly difficult and risky for independent designers and makers like us to bring physical products to life.
By backing this project, you are essentially making a pre-order. You’ll be the first to get your hands on the products on offer, and more importantly, be part of the founding community of people that got this project off the ground. We’ll also love you forever.
Our funding goal in pounds reflects the circumference of the the moon in kilometres. We did of course calculate how much we realistically needed to reach to make this campaign worthwhile, and then (after researching countless “space numbers”) found a there-abouts number that fitted our project theme. We hope you enjoy this attention to detail, and look forward to your support.

Backers will be given the opportunity to upgrade their rewards delivery service to Registered Delivery (which includes basic tracking and insurance) after the funding period has finished, for an additional £5. (option will be presented in the kickstarter survey and payable via PayPal).
Neither Duncan Shotton or the studio can take responsibility for items posted with the Standard Delivery option that are subsequently lost in transit. (But luckily, this hardly ever happens ^_^)
THE FINAL WORD
Thank you for your pledge in advance, and for sharing this campaign with as many people as you can, through word of mouth, social media and email. Your support means a great deal to our small business.

Risks and challenges
Every project has it's challenges but you can see from our portfolio we have a lot of experience designing products and coordinating their manufacture. We also have great experience in order management and fulfilment. Since 2011, we’ve successfully processed and delivered more than 4,000 orders, to customers all over the world via our online shop. On top of that, we now have 3 successful kickstarter projects under our belts (search "Rainbow Pencils”, “Sticky Page Markers" or “Soy Shape”) which gives us further capability to plan and execute this one too.
All three of our previous Kickstarter projects have delivered all rewards on time and as planned, and we don't have any plan to let that record slip now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
