A New Game On Ancient Hardware
Nebs 'n Debs is a new game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Run, jump, and dash your way through 12 levels as you search for the missing parts of Debs's ship to escape the hostile alien planet Vespasian 7MV! Nebs 'n Debs runs on the same type of game cartridge as the original Super Mario Bros. Download and try the first level of Nebs 'n Debs on your emulator of choice.
- 12 unique levels
HAAAAARRRRRDDDDDDDDD Mode (unlocked after beating all 12 levels)
- Run-jump-dashing-platforming-crystal-collecting action
This Kickstarter campaign will raise funds for the first run of the game. This includes, depending on your pledge, the actual game cartridge, a dust sleeve, box, manual, and poster. The box, manual, and poster are expertly designed by Klinger Creative. All game parts will be new: PCB, cartridge shell, and dust sleeve. No donor parts! All illustrations are created by Kaela Camille Agustin. For example, check out this awesome box cover:
Partying Like It's 1986
Creating a game for an older console like the NES can be a fun and rewarding challenge. Lucky for me, both Anders and Kulor were up for the challenge of creating content for the NES--specifically a resource-constrained game cartridge called NROM-256. Anders Gullmarsvik's gorgeous pixel art and Kulor's catchy tunes are the foundation of the Nebs 'n Debs experience and I think have made the game the best looking and sounding NROM game for the NES.
Nebs 'n Debs Enhanced OST ($12,500)
This will be a digital download available to all reward levels once we hit $12,500! The OST will contain all the original awesome tracks from Nebs 'n Debs as well as a number of enhanced tracks where kulor arranges the original song on more sophisticated hardware such as the SNES...
Curious how an enhanced OST works? Well, check out kulor's work on the Altered Ego OST. My favorite is "Level 2 (Enhanced)".
NESDEV Competition 2016
Nebs 'n Debs started as a 2016 NESDEV Competition entry. That demo version of the game won 2nd place and is included on the Action 53 Volume 3 cartridge. Since then, we have developed the full game with updated graphics, physics, and more music! Note, this is not to dissuade you from playing Action 53 Volume 3.
Nebs 'n Debs is possible due to following talented people:
Kaela Camille Agustin - Artist
Richard 'kulor' Armijo - Musician
Chris Cacciatore - Programmer
Anders Gullmarsvik - Artist
Heather Klinger - Graphic Designer
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge in developing an NROM game for the NES is wrestling with memory constraints. Fitting in the physics, rendering logic, animation definitions, enemy AI, and level definitions into 32K is like assembling an Ikea bed-frame; you're always left with a handful of pieces that didn't quite fit. So you try again! To mitigate this I've waited to Kickstart the game 'til the majority of the levels were complete or in testing and the majority of in-game content was created.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
