Inspired by the terrible brilliance of H. P. Lovecraft, Cthulhu Deckbuilder is a deck building card game. Everything you need for a great game is in the box.
Each person plays as an Investigator and starts out with an initial deck that is built upon by gaining the storyboard cards as the game progresses.
During game play, Investigators are driven insane and need to devise strategies to regain their sanity. If they fail, they’re out of the game.
Players that remain sane (or sane enough) continue building the strongest deck to defeat the Ancient Ones and whomever has the most Victory Points at the end wins.
For those brave enough to challenge the Ancient Ones, you will receive special gifts. These gifts are included in the first printing of the game and then will be available as promotional cards, sold separately and/or included in expansion sets.
Hound of Tindalos
The first gift is the image of the Hound of Tindalos captured in its displaced form, the second printing will get the regular artwork instead.
Lost 13 Tribe
The second gift is the Lost 13 Tribe card pack included for free (14 cards, 13 Lost tribe cards and 1 location).
Occult Specialist Investigator
The third gift is a special Investigator, the Occult Specialist bonus card.
(side note - we have adjusted the Investigators to balance them out, including the ability of the Nun - which is now the Priest's)
Setup The Game
As the threat from the Ancient Ones rises, our fate rests in the hands of 2 to 5 Investigators who must risk their own sanity to defeat these sinister forces.
Cthulhu Deckbuilder is not a collectable card game. Everything you need for 5 players to compete to build the most powerful deck comes right in the box.
Players each start out with equal decks but will build better decks as the game progresses adding stronger cards or banishing weak ones.
Winners are decided based on who has the most victory points at the end - but be careful you don’t go insane first or you’ll be out of the game early.
Play the Gangster, the Constable, the Nun, the Priest, the PI, the Professor, or the Psychic.
Each becomes an impromptu investigator, tasked with getting to the bottom of the mysteries of R’lyeh and the ancient evils crawling the earth, using their unique abilities to give them an edge along the way.
Not losing your mind -
Be prepared when you go toe-to-toe with the Ancient Ones, for madness is always lurking nearby.
Game scenarios including event, surprise effects, and the use of certain arcane or artifacts push and pull on your sanity.
Take care not to accumulate too many Insanity points lest you succumb to the madness and cross over.
From there, it’s a fight to the death for whatever scrap of humanity was left inside of you to claw its way free. Hurry, or you may really be done for.
Ancient Ones -
Drawn in simultaneously beautiful and gut-turning detail, any active Ancient Ones invoke The Haunting. To make matters worse, when the card for an Ancient One is revealed, it “awakens” unleashing a catastrophic attack on each player. If an Investigator is fortunate enough to overcome the Ancient One's haunting and can manage to survive long enough to banish them, the Investigator learns something from the encounter they can use later on in the game.
Psychic Blast -
If things get really dire, fate has chosen to give you an extra opportunity.
You can buy your way out of trouble with special Psychic Blast cards when the situation calls for it… just beware of running this resource dry. Once the Psychic Blasts run out, there’s no way to get them back.
Should you be unlucky enough to stumble upon a corrupting force in the game, you’ll find yourself drawing from the Corruption pile. Get rid of it quick or it could come back to haunt you.
We’re not saying this box is going to crawl out of the closet while you’re sleeping and whisper ancient chants into your mind, but if you suddenly feel compelled to worship ancient malevolent deities, you may want to considering burning it.
When you take home Cthulhu Deckbuilder, you invite over 270 seething cards with 6 unique layouts for various game elements over to your humble abode. Pray the forces of good will outweigh the evil trying to drive you mad.
Here is a look at all of the types of cards in the game:
Possible Box Cover Art:
As if staying sane wasn’t hard enough, we’ve devised special dice to help give your character that extra push over the edge of insanity.
Each custom die will have numbers 1 – 12 in white and numbers 13 – 19 in red, with number 20 replaced by an icon.
If you want to upgrade the chaos in your game, select the HRII reward and we’ll send you a pack of 5 extra madness-inducing dice to go with your collection.
From the ashes, a unique Investigator is born… and they look curiously like you.
With the CHTENFF and HAFH’DRN rewards, you can become an immortal when your image is reborn as the face of one of the Investigators or Allies waging eternal war with the Ancient Ones.
Send us your pictures and our team of alchemists will transform you into a powerful adversary against evil, complete with your own special abilities.
Keep in mind – you’re dealing with dangerous and unpredictable forces. We can’t trust the fate of our world to muses who aren’t prepared to take the task seriously. Send in only pictures of yourself prepared to be the inspiration behind playable characters or powerful allies who are on the cusp of a secret war.
Once you send us your pictures, you entrust us to use your essence wherever it is needed in an effort to save humanity – without wasting precious hours contacting you first.
And last but not least: pray that when the Ancient Ones are temporarily vanquished by the spirit of someone who looks a lot like you, it doesn’t inspire their wrath.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed for you.
Invite the Ancient Ones in to your home with these 5x7 prints of their madness inducing pictures, you can tempt fate by selecting them all for $40 or believe you will be safe by selecting the individually for $8 each (non-USA add $2 postage per package) - Will be shipped separate from main reward as a letter to wherever you're hiding away.
Shipping in the USA - We will ship Cthulhu Deckbuilder directly with USPS, it will cost $6.
Shipping to Canada - To keep your costs as low as possible, we’re shipping through a distributor in Canada. We found a reliable and cost-effective distributor who will ship for $15. We are taking care of the VAT. Customs are handled by the import company.
Shipping to the EU - We are shipping through an EU company and we will pay VAT on the import and ship through the UK Royal Mail, it will cost $20. Customs are handled by the import company.
Shipping outside of the EU/America/Canada - shipping outside of the above areas will be $27. Unfortunately, we won't be able to cover any of the VAT or customs charges.
Why no free shipping? We worked through a number of models trying to figure a way to fairly provide free shipping to as many people as possible but found that through every model, the shipping issue came out skewed because of the wildly different costs involved in shipping to different parts of the world.
We want everybody to have a good experience and to do that, we did everything we could to reduce costs to expensive regions and then simplified our shipping policy to be the actual costs to get the game to you.
We wanted to reduce the funding needed to get Cthulhu Deckbuilder off the ground while reducing our environmental impact.
The solution was specialized packaging that is smaller than what you would see in the stores.
The box will be an off-the-shelf card storage box - which is large enough to hold the game cards sleeved and room for the 5 dice.
This packaging will help us to send the game anywhere in the world using the United States flat rate shipping. It will also greatly reduce the excess materials that would end up in a landfill at some point.
I've participated in a LOT of Kickstarters - most have been successful, a couple are years behind (but still working it) - and some have completely failed. I paid a lot of attention to the late and the failed and figured out the reason they failed was due to poor planning, depending on others for their timeline and a failure to actually secure and test manufacturers of the goods. I'm determined to not have my Kickstarter fail - or be late - so I've done crowdfunding a little backwards - I've searched out vendors for the card printing, I've already placed an order for the dice (which are *very* custom and required molds, layout plans, back and forth with the makers, quotes from dozens of dice companies, etc), I've already placed an order for the beta versions of the decks to make sure they print out as desired, I've secured sourcing from several vendors for the final product. Going with the Kickstarter Eco Packaging(tm) - I can get and assemble the packages rapidly and our company has had years of experience with shipping orders timely and tracked. Lastly, apart from the graphics that are part of the rewards, I've already commissioned the artists to make the artwork and more than half of it is done.
I believe in my project! And I've put my money where my mouth is - I've spent several thousand dollars of my own money on just the production and I'm currently spending thousands to advertise the project. While I do need your help to complete the project, I wanted to make sure I've put in my money to show my dedication to this project. I want to make an entire line of games and I need a loyal group of supporters who want to see games that are fun to play, made and delivered on time and won't break the bank buying them - and - will trust and fund my Kickstarters!
What I will promise you is, should some unexpected delays happen, or things aren't what I've planned - I will communicate this to you as soon as I have verified information - and as soon as I know something is wrong, you'll know. I know it is a rip from a certain TV show on HBO and a series of books, but I have said this for a while now - I always pay my debts. You will get your product.
The funding we raise will be used for:
Production costs Graphics
We’ve already invested thousands ourselves to get Cthulhu Deckbuilder to where it is. We believe in this project and we’re avid fans, ourselves. We want to play this game, and we want fans all over the world to be able to play.
We already have everything in place and paid for. All we have to do is complete the reward level artwork and then order from the manufacturers of the various components, assemble and ship.
We believe this reduces your risk greatly.
Is the haunting too much? Need to escape from the nightmare? We believe in Cthulhu Deckbuilder. We back it up with a Money Back guarantee for our Kickstarter backers. If you pledge to support Cthulhu Deckbuilder and you decide the game isn't for you within 30 days of receiving it, you may return it for a refund.
Risks and challenges
1. Creative setbacks.
Cthulhu Deckbuilder is a highly artistic project resting on the creative endeavors of multiple artists. While the people we’ve been working with are phenomenal, whenever you’re dealing with creative projects, there’s a risk that the artists involved could face a creative block which would delay the production.
On top of that, we’ve included a reward feature that requires input from the backers themselves! We have faith that we’ll receive what we need from them as soon as the project launches, but it does carry the risk that they might delay sending us what we need to meet our promises on our end.
2. Manufacturing setbacks.
Our project could be delayed if the manufacturers we’ve contracted with start falling behind or bump our order back in line.
We could also face setbacks if political changes created additional tariffs that don’t exist right now.
While all looks good now, should any of these problems arise, we will be flexible and continue to forge ahead by devising new adaptive strategies that put the product in your hand in a timely manner.
3. Acts of the Ancient Ones.
As with any human endeavor, there is always the risk of major catastrophes, political upheaval, and death that could get in the way of production.
While I can’t tell the future as far as the big things go, I can tell you that I have poured so much into this project and taken it most of the way already that if that proverbial bus were to get me tomorrow, my wife would have more than enough information to finish my work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
