About

Statue of players in Hangzhou.

Xiangqi (Also known as the Chinese chess) is one of the most popular board game in China.

Originated from Saturanga, an ancient chess was invented in India from the 5th century to the sixth century then moved to the west, became Western board game or "International Chess" and went east became Chinese Chess game.

The Chinese had improved Saturanga board as follows:

• They did not use "square" to differentiate the two cells, they switched to "line". Only with this changed, they have increased the number of troops from 64 points to go up by 81.

•The two countries were antagonists, they must have clear borders, thereby, they posed a river to divide to sides. When the "River" appears on the board increased 18 more points. Thus, the chess table is now 90 points compare with 64, which is a significant expansion. However, the general area of the board almost did not increase much only up to 8 cells.

•As a nation it much have provisions and could not walk around like chess board games like Saturanga board game. So a provision was created each side. This reflects the oriental thinking.

•Ancient chess game did not have Cannon. Researchers agreed that Cannon was added from the Tang Dynasty.

•Saturanga board game shaped pieces are cubes, but Chinese Chess pieces are the same shapes, only different name and are written in Kanji. This may be the reason why chess is not popular outside China.
