For nine years, New York pie-oneer Down Under Bakery Pies - or DUB Pies as fans know and love them - have made delicious, savory New Zealand-style pies for New York’s pubs and cafes.
Along with life-changing Flat White-style coffee, the pies have been served for the past five years from our café in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn.
In New Zealand, you can get a pie anywhere, anytime. This isn’t the case in New York, so we’ve decided it’s time to take our pastry pockets of goodness mobile with The DUB Pies Food Truck. People need pies!
Few foods are better suited to food trucks than our meat (or vege) pies. The portable pie is the perfect street and event food, and once upon a time, the humble kiwi “pie cart” was ubiquitous. We believe pies are just as suited to the streets and events of New York City, and deserve to be equally ubiquitous.
The truck once served pizza, but our pie-kitchen needs are so different that a lot of work needs to be done. The truck needs to be 'wrapped' to look like a pie truck and it requires a complete re-fit inside with the following specialist equipment:

WHAT ARE DUB PIES?
Ask any sensible New Zealander and they will tell you: the pie is the perfect delivery mechanism for pleasure. We’re not talking about apple pies, pumpkin pies or even “a slice of pizza pie”, but a delicious dose of hand-held goodness.
Light, buttery pastry. Rich gravy. Fresh vegetables. Tender chunks of prime meat. And a whole lotta love.
In the South Pacific, where it is revered as the ultimate comfort food, this protein-packed portable meal is a peerless lunch-on-the-run, an unimproveable slab of succulent soul food you can eat anywhere, at any time, even while driving your car.
At Dub Pies, we've thought a lot about the perfect pie. Inside ours, you’ll find only the best ingredients, and our vegetarian pies are just as popular as the meat ones. We don’t want to say they’re perfect, but actually … they are.
The pies you can expect to find aboard The Dub Pies Food Truck include: Mince (delicious ground beef in succulent gravy), Mince & Cheese, Steak & Cheese, Steak & Mushroom, Curry Vegetarian, Creamy Vegetable, Chicken & Vegetable, Spicy Thai Chicken, New York Shepherd’s Pie, Sausage Rolls, Spinach & Feta Rolls and much more!
We’ll also be serving Counter Culture Coffee espresso-based coffees, including the world-famous Flat White: the perfect combo of espresso and finely steamed milk.
Like most food trucks, we’ll be using social media, apps & like-minded websites to get the word out and let you know where the Pie Truck is on any given day. And we'll keep our Kickstarter friends up to date with our progress.

UPDATE 3/13/2013: WE MADE OUR MAIN GOAL WITH 8 DAYS REMAINING - PLEASE KEEP PLEDGING SO WE CAN NOW REACH OUR "STRETCH GOAL" - DUB FOOD TRUCK JUNIOR!
We made it! And we still have momentum! We need another $10k to put actualize our goal of putting 2nd smaller - DUB Pies Food Truck Junior. This truck will be specialized for pies only (probably too small for coffee too) and will be available for special events, festivals & private parties. Look at it! It’s the cutest truck ever.
Because of amazing people like you - we surpassed our goal! But don't fret - the pledges are still active for 8 days and you too can help on this project!

Risks and challenges
We're confident that the success we've had with our pies and coffee, served from our cafe for 5 years, will translate well to the food truck format. That said, we know there are plenty of challenges ahead - not least with regard to the bureaucratic hurdles that are part & parcel of running a food truck in the highly regulated New York City food-scape.
We've done our research to make sure we're crossing the t's and dotting the i's and we've availed ourselves of the experience of several people that have worked food trucks in NYC for years. We expect to use them as a resource moving forward and we'll do everything we can to make proud the giants on whose shoulders we will be standing.
From DUB Pies' inception, it was Gareth's dream to share his love of the great Kiwi pie and the flat white with New York and beyond. He will apply the same determination in putting this food truck on the road as he's shown in each step of his grand pie project thus far. The pies must get through!
