A finalist for the 2018 Golden Arbutus Game Design Award, PEDIGREE is a board game based on actual genetic biology and real life decisions of animal breeding to produce show ring champions and top dollar animals.
CURRENTLY AVAILABLE SPECIES: Beef Cattle, Suffolk Sheep, Brangus Cattle, Quarter Horses, Labrador Retriever Dogs, Berkshire Pigs, Jersey Cattle, Southdown Sheep
The game is species-neutral, except for the 140 Animal Cards, so by adding new Animal Card decks it would be easy to play PEDIGREE with horses, dogs, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, llamas, or whatever specie you fancy. However, each new specie will require new artwork and graphic design so the available species will depend on the success of this campaign. When the campaign ends, all backers will be able to choose from all available species. At the start of the campaign, the only available specie was beef cattle, but we have added Suffolk Sheep, Brangus Cattle, Quarter Horses, Labrador Retriever Dogs, Berkshire Pigs, Jersey Cattle, and Southdown Sheep thanks to Breed Sponsors, and it might be that more sponsors will join us to promote their favorite breed or their favorite specie. These sponsored Animal Card decks will then be available to all backers.

"...unique realistic theme flooded with thematic scientific aspects!" — Dan King, Game Boy Geek
"...the way the entire game plays out was very unique and interesting. I found myself just smiling the whole time playing. Every aspect of the game just kind of clicks."— Ed Farias, convention playtester
"When I first saw Pedigree, I wasn't as intrigued by the theme - until I began to play. It is a fast, streamlined game and the theme jumps out as both complementing the gameplay and being much more interesting than 'trading in the Mediterranean.' It is an interesting, 60-minute, action-selection game, but it's especially great for animal lovers or those interested in ranching or agribusiness." — Ben Vaterlaus, convention playtester
“There are some solid mechanisms at play here. Great set of options and decisions for a truly strategic and rewarding experience. I also sense a very creative way in which everything is brought together.” — board game industry exec
"An exciting game where you strive to breed the best of the best, learning the decision process and animal husbandry along the way. A great learning tool as you learn real-life failures and successes." — Jeff McClure, Illinois Suffolk sheep breeder
“At family gatherings, my rancher husband and my dad tend to ‘conveniently’ disappear outside to do cattle chores when it’s time to bring the board games out. However, last Christmas, we had the opportunity to play a prototype of Pedigree, and we talked my dad and husband into playing ‘just one round.’ Hours later, they were more into the game than the rest of us! We all got pretty competitive in the many rounds that we played, and I think it was because the game was so relatable to our real life on the ranch. I have fond memories of that weekend playing the game Pedigree with my dad and husband, and I look forward to many more rounds when we receive our published copy of the board game! Plus, I see this as an amazing tool to educate my kids about the realities of cattle business, and I believe this would be an incredible resource for the classroom, as well. We love Pedigree at our house, and I think anyone who loves animals will enjoy it, too!” — Amanda Radke, South Dakota cattle rancher
You are a breeder trying to make the most money by raising the best animals. Your ability to breed champion stock will be determined by your management and mating decisions, along with the luck of genetics. You pick the best animals based on their phenotype (appearance), but their phenotype is an imperfect predictor of their genotype (DNA). The game is played over five years with each year consisting of six seasons:
There are five trophies total, one is awarded each year, and when the trophies are gone, the game is over and whoever has the most total wealth wins the game.

Promote your breed by pledging at the $950 Breed Sponsor level. We will commission custom art for the 140 Animal Card deck with the 5-star male and 5-star female modeled after your chosen animals. The name or logo of your stable/kennel/ranch will be printed on the cards, and you can name up to 25 of the animals. Most importantly, your sponsored breed Animal Card deck will be offered as an option to all backers of this campaign. If you want to save money, join together with other fans/breeders of your breed to jointly sponsor a breed, and the names of all sponsors will be printed on a sponsor-recognition card.
Attaining Stretch Goals allows us to upgrade the physical components of the game due to the economies of scale in manufacturing. The more backers that support PEDIGREE, the higher quality production that we can make, and this will benefit all backers. That's why it's important to get the word out to every potential backer that you know so that we can make the highest quality game possible for everyone.
Kickstarter is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every month, tens of thousands of people pledge millions of dollars to creative projects in dozens of categories.
A person who supports a project is called a "backer." The process of giving money to this project is called a "pledge."
In return for your pledge, we (the creators of the campaign) are able to offer "rewards," depending on the amount you pledge. For example, if you pledge $49 to help back the project, we'll offer you a copy of the game along with any stretch goals we achieve as soon as it is manufactured.
You can become a backer in just two easy steps:
Step 1: Read through the pledge levels and rewards we're offering in the right sidebar of this page, and then click on your chosen reward level.
Step 2: Enter your pledge amount, and complete the steps for filling in your information. Shipping cost will be added automatically according to the table below. This process takes just a few seconds! That's it! It's really that simple! Thank you for backing!
Once you've backed this project, we encourage you to share this page on social media platforms, such as Facebook, and share with your friends and family. Also, be sure to like The Game of Pedigree on Facebook!

GIVING PEDIGREE AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT?
Because we do not know if we can publish the game until after we reach our funding goal, it is not possible to manufacture the game and deliver it by Christmas 2018. However, if you would like to give PEDIGREE as a gift, click HERE to download and print a PDF file to let your gift recipient know what excitement awaits.
Hi. I'm Duane Wulf, the designer of PEDIGREE. I am a former university professor in Animal Science, now serving as a missionary businessman in Mexico. My favorite memories from childhood are playing board games, adventures with my dog, riding horse, and showing cattle at fairs and national shows. I have been fascinated with genetic selection since college, and I first had the idea for PEDIGREE over 20 years ago during graduate school. I started writing the rules and playtesting in Sept 2013 with the goal to create the “feel” and “thrill” of animal breeding and show ring champions. I'm super excited about PEDIGREE, and I sincerely thank you for supporting this effort to make this game a reality.
Risks and challenges
We have been playtesting for five years and the rules are finalized. The artwork is 100% complete (except for any new backer-sponsored breed decks) and the graphic design is almost finished and will be completed shortly after the campaign ends and we have the animal names. As with any board game production, there are always risks related to manufacturing issues, production delays, freight delays, and shipping damages (among other risks). This is our first Kickstarter campaign, but we have done our homework and will work diligently to bring the best-produced game possible in a timely manner. We will be working with established partners for manufacturing, shipping and fulfillment, who have helped fulfill many thousands of past Kickstarter orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
