A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Born In a Basement Workshop
The incredible Dually Bikes dual wheel design was created by a retired tinkerer with the goal of teaching his grandson how to ride a bike without the aid of training wheels. "Training wheels are useless," he said, "they don't teach a kid how to balance."
Our prototypes were made from salvaged bikes that were disassembled. cut, welded, re-assembled, tested and painted. The bike below was being re-assembled for testing. It was one of our very first attempts to make something that works. We've done many since, always improving.
After much tinkering, welding, scraping, and painting, the Dually Bikes dual wheel prototype was born. Now it was time to test it. The impact was immediate. On his grandson's first attempt riding the Dually, he was up and pedaling in minutes! Our tests with other kids produced similar results. And the neighborhood kids loved it.
Now we're ready to move to production. The funds raised here will provide for our first production run. We've got everything ready to go and need sufficient funds for a large enough order to keep the price in line with what most consumers can handle. In other words, we need volume to keep the price reasonable. Affordable to the masses. Please help us get this off the ground!
Balance + Traction
The extra balance wasn't the only benefit from the dual wheel design. Dually bikes have better traction than their single wheel counterparts, creating safer riding on wet streets and uneven surfaces. That means less instances of crashes and the resulting scrapes, bumps, bruises, and tears. Going to the beach? Take your Dually with you - It performs great on sand, too.
Besides the added safety the Dually dual wheel offers, kids are drawn to the distinctive design. Each time we took the bikes out for tests and photos they would draw crowds of kids. It seems they think Duallys look rather cool. But it wasn't just kids that admired the Dually design. Tweens, teens, and adults all expressed interest in Duallys.
The First Dually Bike
Our first production run will be the 12 inch Dually Bike. This will also be the Kickstarter reward bike. The 12 inch is the perfect bike for kids just learning to ride. After communicating with several manufacturers for many months, we are finally starting to work out the details for production costs and timelines. Our bikes will meet all U.S. safety standards and requirements. We will be moving forward quickly after a (hopefully) successful Kickstarter campaign. All money generated from our campaign will go towards production, shipping, marketing, and fulfillment costs.
As with many companies, our beginning production runs will be done overseas due to cost constraints. However, our co-founder has been in talks with another entrepreneur that working toward converting a vacant factory into a production facility that will make Dually Bikes in a distressed neighborhood in the US. Reclamation of a brownfield site! He was a teacher and wants to use his production facility to hire and train local residents for job skills that will help them get and maintain jobs that can be used not only for Dually, but for other companies as well. Make no mistake, Dually Bikes is not a charity. We are a for-profit company looking for long term success. At the same time, Dually believes that partnering with others trying to improve local neighborhoods will strengthen both our company and our community, making Milwaukee a better place to live and work.
Risks and challenges
As any company that partners with overseas companies can tell you, there are inherent risks and challenges. Trade policies, acts of nature, communication, design changes, and quality control are all possible challenges to be overcome.
Our overseas partner has many years of successful experience in manufacturing and exporting, and our co-founder has great relations with them. We've been working on this for over a year to make sure we're doing it right
At Dually, our co-founder has 40 years of business experience and the resultant knowledge of how to make business decisions that make sense for all parties involved. He also used his business skills to create a widely lauded product for deer hunters over 20 years ago that still operates today. WE won't make it if it's not good.
