The Place: An Alcohol Free Entertainment Center.
We are going to refurbish an existing venue, facilitating face-to-face socialising, exciting games, dances, karaoke and much more.
Please be aware that the establishment's policy will require a minimum age of 18 in order to become a member!
If you find yourself being tired of uneventful night outs, or having no interest in what venues are being offered to you, then you're in the same boat as we are. This is a problem that we intend to solve by opening a place where entertainment relies on variety.
The venue we're targeting is located in Ballyconnell, Cavan, and has direct access to the main road. Very easy to get to, it also has ample parking area. Inside, a myriad of activities will be taking place, we'll outline them one by one, in no particular order of importance.
Since the building has 2 floors, we'll start with the ground.
This floor is geared towards socialising and playing games during daytime, and more of a lounge area during special events where music will be played on the second floor. The presence of a microphone system also means that comedy nights are going to be popular, as well as accommodating things like speeches during birthday parties or anniversaries.
It will also house a minibar, where soft drinks ranging from sodas, smoothies and freshly juiced fruits will be available. Aside from that, there are a number of activities our visitors can participate in.
Billiards. Yes, a proper single sandstone slate pool table, with a clean felt, straight cues and hefty balls. Not only does a levelled table provide a much more enjoyable game, it also enables fair friendly competition and possibly even tournaments. A dream come true for any avid pool player.
Board game tables. Something that is sorely lacking in the country. There are very few places that have a dedicated environment for such activity. Usually players are forced into low light, high noise conditions that are a detriment to the enjoyment of the game. The average table is too small in size to accommodate enough room for the actual game, let alone for people's elbows or soft drinks. On top of that, game flow is usually interrupted by hunting rogue dice. In our establishment all those problems will be eliminated, allowing not only to enjoy the game, but these tables have lids, meaning that sessions can be saved until your next visit.
Naturally, other, more traditional activities, will be supported as well. Cards, Chess, Backgammon and the like don't require such a big table, therefore smaller ones will be provided. After all, a chess session pales in comparison to a Warhammer 40k game.
Darts is another common game that is badly represented. Predominantly low light conditions are an impairment to the enjoyment of a game, and puts unnecessary strain on the players. As such we will eliminate this problem and allow people to unleash their deadly arsenal onto the target, without any obstacles stifling their attempts. We are still debating on whether a digital, or a more traditional route should be taken for counting points.
The second floor is a planned stretch goal.
A huge floor space allows for pretty much anything to be undertaken. This is where activities are little bit more, well, active. During daytime there will usually be fitness classes, while at the weekends it will be a place for dancing. We will cater towards all age groups and music tastes, by splitting the weekends into oldschool and newschool style of music.
Throughout the week it is of course possible to have presentations, master classes, educational lectures and talks in the hall.
Risks and challenges
There are several problems that will have to be dealt with if we are to successfully open The Place.
The first and most important one is satisfying the Health & Safety Authority when it comes to adhering to Fire Safety. The building was not designed to have more than 30-40 people in it at a time, as such it needs to undergo an audit, since during disco hours the number if people may rise to more than 50.
Satisfying the auditor aside, the fire escape staircase is in serious disrepair, with birds having nested there for the last 8 years.
The second challenge will be clearing out the facility from the stockpiles of old inventory. Things like old TV's, used carpets, broken doors, and others, are littered around the place, mainly because it was used by others as a temporary vault for equipment and other assets. In basic terms, it's akin to a warehouse.
Some structural changes will have to be introduced, but while a challenge, it certainly is not a major one. Walls are basically plasterboard, so knocking them down won't be the problem, but reestablishing room boundaries won't be so easy. The more difficult aspect would involve refitting some of the showers into toilet cubicles. We are currently unaware as to the state of the piping, but given that the building is fairly new, we don't expect it to have archaic piping, hopefully won't be an issue.
Another problem will be the procurement of the board game tables. While Darts and Pool are fairly common in terms of availability to purchase, these tables are only handmade in the USA. They don't ship, and even if they did, the costs would be very high. We have talked with several carpenters who have confidence they can reproduce, or at least emulate the design and functionality.
Speaking of functionality, it seems no major ISPs have a high speed solution for connectivity. While we do intend to provide High Speed Wi-Fi to our members, acquiring an affordabe solution for the connectivity issue will prove to be most difficult. This being a stretch goal though, is not an immediate concern.
While on the topic of stretch goals, the second floor will require a significant improvement for acoustics. Currently it's an echo generator.
Lastly new carpets and flooring must be laid out. We already have an industry veteran who can perform the refitting, so this issue only requires financing to resolve.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
