About this project

When I decided to write a series of fables I wanted to make readers care about and root for creatures they might otherwise fear or despise. These stories draw on folklore, myth and legend from around the world. Myths have a timeless power to teach and enchant and I wanted to bring some of that magic to these stories.

Each book is illustrated by a different and talented artist and I am thrilled with how they have so far envisioned and depicted the characters.

The first two books are currently available in print and Kindle editions. All five titles will be produced for print and Kindle and will have audio book versions available on Audible.

The funds received from Kickstarter pledges will allow us to finish the remaining artwork and audio and launch a modest marketing campaign for the series.

Below are the titles, summaries and some sample art from the current and upcoming fables. There are links to my website where you can find more information and links to some of the artists' websites as well. We will be developing the final fable in the next few months and intend to share that journey, a pre-publication copy of the book and the chance to create a name for the story with the highest level pledges.

On behalf of the artists and myself I would like to thank you for taking the time  to view and consider our project. We welcome your thoughts and comments.

The Devil and the Darning Needle

Artist: Doug Campbell

Myths have long held that darning needles are nothing more than the devil’s own mouthpieces. In exchange for being transformed from dull, gray, wingless, grub bodies into beautiful winged dragons, they carry the devil’s evil whispers to the ears of men, women, and little children everywhere. Nigel is the largest, strongest, and brightest blue dragonfly ever to emerge from the water and the first to break this pact. He defies the Devil’s minions and refuses to play his part, but can a simple, single darning needle hope to stand against ol’ Scratch himself and change the fate of all his kind?

NAJA

Artist: Samantha Torgersen

Nissa is the smallest cobra born of an aging queen. Her size, unmarked hood, and dull scales are the subject of much torment from her siblings. All of the the royal slither have been schooled by One-Fang, the oldest and wisest cobra, for one of them will rise to become the new queen. Despairing, Nissa chooses to follow the path taken by her teacher in his youth and venture forth amongst men. She is ill prepared for what she finds there, but even more so for what she learns about herself when she is forced to return home.

In Shadow's Sea

Artist: Candace Loehn-Lillis

Very few denizens of the reef do not fear the octopus. All the fear that Umbra inspires in others however, does not compare to the fear she herself harbors. She prefers the shadows and is content to be shunned, for she know that in the sea there are real monsters to fear and solitude and darkness are ever her friends in avoiding them. Will Umbra have the courage to face those monsters when they finally come calling and threaten not only her, but all the reef as well?

The Oracle Who Ate Ants

Artist: Amanda Rose Hunter

It has been many years since the village has found an oracle. The strange creature with scales like a dragon is said to have the power of prophecy and to make strong and wise any who would eat it. Suah's father, Rashidi, is the village medicine man and would offer up the oracle in sacrifice to the village elders. Suah, however, has different plans and soon he and the oracle are struggling for survival in the wilds, far from home and with only each other to rely on.
