The iDreamSaver is an iPhone® and iPod Touch® charging dock and alarm clock that monitors your sleep state and wakes you only from light sleep, which is easier and more natural.
You know how some mornings when the alarm clock sounds, you’re totally unprepared to wake up? Yet there are those mornings where it seems quite easy to wake up -- as if you were already awake. We wanted to ensure that you wake up that easily every day.
ScienceHow you feel in the morning really depends on what sleep state you are in when your alarm goes off. If you are in deep sleep when the alarm sounds, then it's difficult to make the transition from deep sleep to being fully awake so quickly, and the result is a bad start to an otherwise nice day. What we needed was a way for the alarm clock to know your sleep state, so it can avoid this situation altogether and only go off when you are in light sleep. Waking from light sleep is much easier, since you are closer to being awake.
It turns out that body motion is a great indicator of light sleep, whereas lack of motion indicates deep sleep or dream sleep (also known as REM sleep). Using this clear distinction, we engineered a simple and elegant solution to monitor your body motions (from a distance!) and then wake you at the best time. The iDreamSaver is designed to wake you when you move around within a time window that you specify, which we call the “wake-window”. When this wake-window begins, the iDreamSaver becomes ARMED. Once it senses body movement (meaning you are in a lighter sleep state), it will trigger the alarm. Our solution will wake you up more naturally and leave you feeling great the rest of the day!
What makes us different?
Smarter waking isn't exactly a revolutionary concept; people have been tinkering with similar ideas for over a decade. But we feel there is a fundamental flaw in how this waking concept has been executed to date. Other “smart” alarm clock technology requires that you wear a headband, wristband, or other sensor on your body. That means you must remember to put on this equipment every night before bed and make sure it’s charged, too. These systems are cumbersome to set up and use and are not comfortable to wear to bed. We wanted the entire experience of using the iDreamSaver to integrate seamlessly into your normal night-time routine while greatly improving your morning.
The core of the iDreamSaver lies in the state-of-the-art Passive InfraRed (PIR) sensor technology used to monitor your body motions. The PIR sensor sees heat, and it is tuned specifically to the human body temperature (this means it can sense your movement in the dark). In front of the PIR is a Fresnel lens and visible light filter. The Fresnel design extends both the range and the Field Of View of the sensor, so it can detect body movement even from across the room. Additionally, filtering the visible light while transmitting the InfraRed allows for maximum contrast between you and the background, which further improves sensor performance. We are using a high-quality sensor and filter, wrapped in a meticulously-engineered system, so that the result is both robust and extremely reliable. The iDreamSaver is on par with the quality you expect to go with your Apple products.
The iDreamSaver is designed to replace your current charging cable with a dedicated dock and charging stand. Our power cable is twice the length of the standard Apple charger, which provides more flexibility when placing the iDreamSaver near your bed.
Included with the dock are small support spacers, in various sizes, that fill the gap between your device and the back panel of the iDreamSaver. These spacers will help your device fit snugly onto the dock and provide support, while also accommodating a range of case sizes, from thick to thin (or none at all).
Additionally, we wanted to prevent our dock from lifting off the nightstand or sliding around when tapping the screen; we also wanted docking and undocking of your device to be a one-handed operation. We found that simply adding weight to the dock does not always solve these problems. So instead, we chose special micro-suction feet, which solves our requirements. And, they still allow the dock to be removed for travel or to be repositioned without leaving marks, sticky residue, or stains on your nightstand.
The App that accompanies the iDreamSaver hardware will be available for free in the App Store. We offer a wide array of options for the user-interface so that you can set it up according to your preferences, such as multiple alarms that can be independently scheduled, color schemes, snooze options, brightness, screen timeouts, and much more. Best of all, you can access your playlist and select the music of your choice. And, you can use AirPlay to pipe music out of whatever Bluetooth®-compatible device you choose.
We are excited over the number of innovative features we can add to this product via software updates. We plan to continually improve this product long after we deliver the hardware to our backers. Obviously, we cannot promise we will implement everyone’s suggestions, but we will try our best to implement the majority of ideas that we know our user-community will generate.

We call it the iDreamSaver, because it allows you to finish your dreams. Since the alarm doesn't go off until you move, it ensures that you have finished dreaming before waking you up. This is another benefit of waking from light sleep only.
No. The alarm will only trigger during the wake-window, which you set. As soon as you reach this wake-window, the alarm then becomes "armed” and is ready to wake you as soon as you move.
What if I don't move during the wake-window? Is it going to wake me up eventually, or am I going to be late for work?
Don't worry! There's a failsafe. The end of the wake-window is the latest possible time that you want to wake up. If you don't move at all throughout the entire wake-window, then the alarm goes off at the end of the window, defaulting to a normal alarm clock.
Yes. You can set it according to your preference. We recommend thirty minutes for optimal usage. Too short of a window may result in the "failsafe" trigger described above, which negates the benefits of waking up according to your body motions. You can play around with the settings to find a wake-window size that consistently catches you during light sleep. You can even set the wake-window to zero so it defaults to a normal alarm clock, if you prefer.
By adjusting the location of the dock on your nightstand, you can position the sensor so it will only see your body movements. In addition, the App provides a setup screen, which allows you to look at the raw sensor values so you can do your own testing and adjust the sensitivity if needed. However, even if you don't make any adjustments, the device’s default settings will work well for most users right out of the box.
