About this project
Stretch Goal: $12,500
Wow! We hit our goal in less than 3 weeks! Thank you. We are so honored to be a part of your community and are proud to be able to keep bringing you podcasts, essays, programs and even our first book.
Next we want to raise $2,500 dollars to help support two Publishing Residencies this summer. Your contribution will sponsor a recent graduate through 8 weeks of intense publishing training. They will learn all things arts publishing: writing, soliciting, submitting, copyediting, funding, proofreading, and promoting arts writing. Help us cultivate the next generation of arts writers and editors.
Daily Serving | Art Practical is 10 years old!
For a decade, you have trusted us to offer new perspectives and brave critical thinking on arts and artists. We are proud to be reader supported, and for our last 10 years together, we say THANK YOU!
To kick off our 10th year, we’re raising $10,000 to fund original arts writing, events, and unique publishing and audio initiatives for two publications that provide meaningful views on art and culture.
Who are Daily Serving and Art Practical?
Daily Serving and Art Practical are family—two separate publications that share your enthusiasm for thoughtful discourse and belief in the power of independent arts media. Daily Serving focuses on regional art scenes and social issues that make up our global arts world; Art Practical remains one of the only arts-focused publications committed to the San Francisco Bay Area’s vibrant and expansive arts community.
California College of the Arts is Daily Serving and Art Practical’s publisher, but we are responsible for raising 80% of our own operating budget to pay writers, editors, artists, designers, tech and web support, events, and more. Last year, the majority of our funding came from individual donations and ad sales. Now we are asking our two audiences to come together in a shared effort to keep critical and original arts media strong in our 10th year.
What will your contribution support?
Your contribution goes directly to supporting a year of production, in which we:
- pay our contributors, editors, and staff.
- publish regular reviews, interviews, and monthly columns on Daily Serving.
- publish columns and thematic issues on Art Practical.
- launch the new lecture series "Art and Crisis" and collaborate with multiple institutions on Radical Feminist/Non-binary/POC Wikipedia Edit-a-thon events.
- launch two new podcasts hosted by Weston Teruya and Elena Gross focusing on art, race, and visual culture.
- produce our first print publication with #Hashtags columnist Anu Vikram.
- hold space for Shop Talk, a meetup for art critics in cities around the world.
- initiate an editorial mentorship program specifically for emerging editors of color.
And our most important goal for year 10: Daily Serving and Art Practical commit to creating programs that feature the voices and perspectives of those who are historically and systematically underrepresented in the art world. Equity happens on our public-facing side through our articles, episodes, and events, but most importantly on our administrative end by supporting a new generation of writers and editors with the experience, skills, and access to create the art world they wish to see.
Daily Serving and Art Practical will continue our commitment to making the art world more equitable with targeted editorial, programming, and mentoring initiatives and opportunities that create space for those who have historically faced systemic disadvantage.
Our choice of Kickstarter was a no-brainer! Daily Serving and Art Practical have always been crowd-funded and community-created endeavors. Our publications were built from the ground up by artists, writers, and thinkers looking for a different kind of art world. This spirit is who we are and why we continue to work. Help us continue to build an inclusive art world.

Risks and challenges
Combined, Daily Serving and Art Practical have been around for 17 years. No matter the economic climate, we have always found creative ways to continue our production. Last month, we successfully renegotiated our three-year contract with our publisher, California College of the Arts. We are in it for the long haul; and we are directly supporting an arts community that is in economic crisis—housing, work space, exhibition venues, and patrons are all at risk. We are one of the only arts publications that focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area, and we plan to fight tooth and nail to be here with and for you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
