About

Why Kickstarter?  After four years of testing and design, DryAway is ready for it's first production run.  Much time, money and energy has gone into proving out the product.  A successful Kickerstarter campaign will finance the large inventory and setup costs of a first production run without obtaining an investor or loan.  Doing this keeps the cost down and rewards you the backer with a great new product at a price below future retail.

What's the Problem?  “Doing the laundry” is a never-ending chore in every home. In the United States, the average family does 400 loads of laundry per year. Households spend hundreds of dollars each year on gas or electricity to run their dryer. Even more costly is the shrinking and damage that excessive dryer heat causes to your jeans, microfibers, delicates and cotton clothes. To avoid these problems, many people are choosing to hang dry… even if they don’t have the space. Current choices for hang drying are very limited. Outdoor clothes lines are not intended for all weather and many times not even be allowed per community rules. The accordion style rack. These Clunky racks are hard to load, unsightly, in the way and easily collapse. Yet no matter how awkward the process, people still continue to hang dry because it keeps their clothes from being damaged. Reacting to customer demands, builders have been building larger Laundry and Mud Rooms in an attempt to be more efficient. Yet there hasn’t been a suitable air drying solution tailored for these spaces. Until Now!

A Unique Solution!  DryAway is a permanent fixture that dries clothes out of the way and out of sight without any fans or energy. A series of sturdy bamboo frames that individually pull out with adjustable poles for hanging, DryAway is easily loaded with wet clothes and then pushed back to dry… out of sight, and out of the way. The unique space saving design is flexible… adjusting to your laundry volume, and your lifestyle. DryAway is compatible with almost any laundry room. The high capacity universal mounting system can be built into a custom cabinet, mounted from the ceiling or installed in a standard closet. DryAway saves you money while protecting the environment and your clothes.

DryAway Options:  Choose from four, six or eight frames (every two frames drys one load of wash).  Three different frame heights to match the mounting style and location (ceiling, cabinet or closet).

The Design Story: My wife Lisa and I built a new home in 2000. It was an opportunity for us to design our space to fit our needs and life style. Of course the engineer in me went to work trying to think of everything and anything to make our lives more efficient. The laundry room and mud room were a top concern. Routinely a lot happens in the laundry room yet it is generally an afterthought in the builders plans. We wanted to design an area to hang dry clothes in our first floor laundry room to cut down on carrying wet cloth all over. In our prior home we used three accordion style racks to hang dry laundry and that took up a lot of space. To make hang drying efficient the product had to be close to the washer, out of sight, out of the way and easy to use. I searched long and hard, and found no products on the market that did all the things I wanted, so I built my own solution.

The original design used pocket door track hardware at the ceiling with solid 1”x 2” maple frames hung from them.  While our house was being built, I setup shop in the garage and drilled holes for cross poles in the sides of the eight frames every two inches.  In order to mount the pocket door track hardware to the ceiling it required my builder to put solid backing behind the drywall in the ceiling to mount to.  My builder thought I was nuts.  Drywall itself would not be strong enough.

For poles I found curtain rods would easily retract and relocate to another set of holes.  Amazingly my original design worked great and we have been useing it happily since.  Over the next 9 years I found the best spacing and methods to make my drying racks work efficiently and incorporated that into DryAway.

I've had many compliments on my drying racks and people who wanted them in their own home.  I never pursued making them for anyone else because they ware custom to my home and no one had the support in their ceiling to replicate what I had done.

The Turning Point: In 2009, the housing market collapsed and my mortgage company was suffering.  Looking for an additional source of income, I decided it was time to redesign my drying racks so that they could fit into anyone’s home. What I thought was going to be an easy modification turned into a long design adventure to create the perfect drying racks.

In addition to my original design criteria, I needed the drying racks to fit in an 8’, 9’ and 10’ high room. They also had to fit in a standard closet for those who didn't have an open space. The closet version required that no hardware could hangout (i.e. pocket door track) so an entirely different mounting system needed to be created that would allow a frame to individually pull out without clothes catching on the neighboring frame. This meant that the frames needed to swing or slide side to side. Spreading them out would take up additional space. I tried a number of designs that worked on paper but didn't function smoothly in real life.

Slider and metal fabricated parts.
Slider and metal fabricated parts.

I shifted my attention to using a drawer slide that already had a proven design.Yet this still posed problems because the slides were not made to handle twisting forces. Along with trying to make the frames swing side to side, I needed to come up with a mounting bracket that would be able to hit the ceiling joist no matter which direction or spacing they were. The final answer to solving the combination of these problems is what I believe is a functional patent. The final patent application has been in the US Patent office for one and half years with an estimated one year remaining before it is reviewed.

Early frame prototype testing.
Early frame prototype testing.

Over the last four and a half years I've entertained many frame designs. Injection molded plastic, thermoformed plastic, metal and finally back to wood. Solid wood had functional problems of twisting and warping while furniture grade plywood worked well but didn't look as nice. Of all the wood products bamboo turned out to be the best choice. Bamboo is not only beautiful but resists twisting, warping and even water damage. Bamboo was perfect for my application accept that as a raw material it wasn't readily available in the United States. I found a reliable manufacturer’s rep, Yi Wang, together we narrowed down to one furniture company in china to provide the final prototype and pricing. The frames were a large portion of the overall product cost and until I got pricing to meet the business model it didn't make sense to push forward. This was a critical hurdle to overcome.

I have been lucky to have many friends and a large network that has helped me through the design and testing phase.  As the product design came together I also had to get production costs to make sense.  Once I found vendors to produce all the different parts for the right price, I focused more heavily on the branding and marketing needed to take DryAway to the consumer.

DryAway's First Production Run: Heading into Kickstarter, DryAway is ready for production. There are four major vendors to make the different parts and send to Jilidon Designs for packaging. The Metal fabricated parts for the mounting system are all made by Technical Metal Specialties (TMS) in Milwaukee, WI. These parts have all had small runs that confirmed production will be smooth. The fiberglass poles are a simple sourced material that has also been proven reliable.

The sliders are a significant component functionally. The only way to could confirm that everything worked properly was to order a small run of product. The slider is a standard catalog product for this large manufacturer with exception of the custom mounting holes specific to DryAway. The sliders are run on a high production line that require a tooling change for DryAway. Because of setup, a minimum order was required to get the final product made. So I bit the bullet and currently have 1000 sliders on hand to cover the first production run and remove one potential bottleneck.

The final production challenge is manufacturing the frames in China and getting them to my warehouse in a timely manner. I will travel to the manufacturer and confirm the design and quality control before shipping. Shipping overseas from China is the slowest part of the process and would be the main cause of any delay. This is the phase that I will keep my backers informed on.

Installation: DryAway has many applications so it is going to be important to communicate with backers through pictures, drawings, phone and email to make sure that the installation is nothing but perfect. That is one of the reasons why I want to install the first 60 units and make sure that each situation is done to satisfaction. If not satisfied, I will take the product back and give them their money back. The units that are installed by the backer or by a contracted party will need clear directions and support. An installation video along with written instructions will be finished after DryAway is funded but before delivery.

The amount of orders will dictate the number of employees and contractors I need to hire. At the minimum goal of $10,000 approximately 20 units would need to be delivered and installed. This is an amount of orders that I would manage and fill myself with help from my family and friends. Currently my slider inventory is in a friend’s warehouse and I could handle it from there. If Kickstarter creates a large demand for DryAway, employee and overhead costs have been factored in so that Jilidoni Designs, LLC would be able to ramp up both to handle the volume. That’s the dream!.

Risks and challenges

Much of the risk has been taken out as DryAway is finished and tested. The main challenge is the delivery time of the bamboo frames. Since bamboo is not readily available in the United States it is more cost effective to produce over seas and ship finished. All the other parts are made locally and will be combined with the frames in Brookfield, Wisconsin to then be shipped to you.

I will be working closely with my frame manufacturer in China to make sure final details are covered and the product inspected before taking the long boat ride. I anticipate delivery in June. I will be scheduling installations in the order pledges are made.

Your satisfaction is most important. We want every installation to be the best it can be. Because of the variations in customer laundry room designs we will work with you and your contractor in the placement and type of system to make the best match. Email us a picture or drawing and we can create the efficient clutter free laundry room you have always wanted.
