About this project
Aliens came to save us. They thought it would be easy.
They were wrong.
"A playfully original beginning to what promises to be an epic alien invasion story… I like it." —Fanboy Comics
Broken Saviors is an original graphic series that explores what happens when humanity becomes the subject of a global “nation building” endeavor conducted by a mysterious race of aliens who claim they're here to save us. It’s Saga meets The Walking Dead with a twist of Morning Glories — in this alien invasion epic characters are challenged to confront who they are and what's worth saving.
The first six issues are written, revised, and ready to be produced. After reading over 120 submissions from interested artists, I found Patrick (the artist for the project). We spent several months working together to develop the visual style for the project and produced Issue #1. Now we're making it available to you for free to read and share. (Click here or below to download a .pdf of the whole first issue!)
The goal of our Kickstarter campaign is to raise enough funds to produce Issue #2 and keep the story going. Patrick and I are both experienced comic book creators, and we're eager to deliver a compelling and unique story to our supporters.
We're turning to crowd funding for support because producing a comic book is extremely labor intensive and expensive. I've already worked on the script for a couple years, and the whole thing has been thoroughly revised. It's a complete narrative with several character arcs. Now we want to produce the story so we can make it available to you.
Please look below for our Budget, Production Plan, and Story Background. Check out the nifty rewards we're offering to supporters. And read and share Issue #1 with anyone you know who loves comics.
Thank you for visiting. We hope you'll join the rebellion, or the invasion, and keep the story going.
Any amount will help bring this story into the world!
Doing pencils, inks, colors, and letters for each page costs about $100 per page. Each page takes around 3-4 days to produce (not counting revisions). Since most issues are 22-24 pages, the average issue costs around $2200 to create. So nearly 90% of your support goes to covering the production costs and making this story something you can read, enjoy, and share. 5% of funding goes to covering the cost of purchasing fonts and other software. 5% goes to covering printing and shipping costs for the rewards, and Kickstarter and credit card fees.
For this campaign, we're trying to raise the minimum amount of funds needed to produce Issue #2 so we can send our supporters a quality visual story.
Issue #2 has been funded! (Thank you Backers!)
Now we're trying to raise funds to produce Issue #3 and beyond! The more funds we raise, the more pages we'll be able to produce and send to you. This means:
—More pages sent to you
—A greater possibility of a print edition
It costs about $2200 to produce each issue. So our next stretch goal is $4700. I'm going to take on extra jobs to try to double the funds folks have already contributed. So if we make the Stretch Goal of $4700, I'll find a way to chip in another $2,500 and we'll produce issues 2-4. That means Backers will eventually get 90 pages of an original comic series sent to them, along with other rewards.
Although I've written and published comics and novels in the past with traditional publishers like VERTIGO, Scholastic Press, and Candlewick Press, I'm not planning to make any profit on this project. More the opposite, actually. I'm willing to pay a bit out of pocket to enact this vision because I strongly believe in this story, and I believe it needs to exist in the world. I hope you'll believe in it too.
Broken Saviors began as an exploration of the question, What would happen if aliens came to save us? For some, this might speak to a deep-seated fantasy for a higher power to rescue us. For others, it's a nightmare.
In writing this narrative, I wanted to explore issues of nation building, what it means to be free, our connection to the cosmos, and our moral obligation to the creatures we share this planet with. As I got into the story, though, the characters took over and developed their own responses to the invasion that I never predicted.
The narrative follows three main characters: Mackenzie, Chase, and Hannah44 (one of the alien Tem), who go on three drastically different journeys when cultures and desires collide. It's a complex, interwoven narrative that's full of twists and turns. Where it goes surprised me, and I think it will surprise you as well.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please check out Issue #1, and please share this project with others who might help this story exist.
Risks and challenges
I've spent years working on these scripts and the story is ready and complete. Patrick and I have produced Issue #1, and we're confident that if funded we can produce Issue #2 in a timely fashion.
If we're able to raise more funds through a stretch goal, we'll produce more issues and send them to you. Please see "Production Plan" for our ultimate goal to take over the surface world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
