About this project
If you missed a chance to pledge or you decide later that you'd like to increase your pledge, OR you just want to continue supporting the project, you can donate via PayPal on our website and join the Druid Origin Guild any time!
Our most heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has participated (and will participate!) with us in our campaign, we couldn't have come so far without all of you, contributors great and small! We will continue to do regular updates so keep checking back and keep spreading the word about our project!
In Dreamtime, the player assumes the role of a young Ursine from one of four main tribes, whose destiny has not yet been determined. At the game's start, they have reached the age of maturity known as the Chut’que (chewt kay) a time to undergo an honored ritual, the dreaming. Guided by the clan seer, the dreaming is an astral journey where Ursines travel into the spirit world to stand before their patron god and receive divine messages about their destiny.
However, things will not be so easy for our intrepid player. For the first time in the long oral history of the tribes, the dreaming does not go as planned. The player finds more than a god waiting for them in the mists and is left with disconcerting images of a shrouded figure whose intent seems far from benevolent.
The story’s focus hinges upon the legend of an ancient relic and the player’s quest to retrieve it in an attempt to avert the looming threat foreshadowed in their vision. Through this journey the player will unravel the true purpose of the lost relic and of the Ursine tribes entrusted to its safekeeping, but will it be enough to divert the danger away from their family and homeland?
A prelude title in the Witanlore series, Dreamtime is expected to release on Steam semi episodically with the first episode retailing for around $4.99 USD. The official publish date is yet to be decided but our goal is to have the core episode on the digital shelves this year!
Is not just about kickstarting our game project, our engine is licensed and production is well underway. We're here to raise funding to help us get over a serious financial hurdle; raising money to pay freelance artists to fill a highly specialized role in our development team. Only with the support of fans like you will we be able to hit our development milestones on schedule and add all the awesomeness we have planned!
What We Need & What You Get
Our goal for this campaign is very small and straight forward. After Kickstarter and Amazon take their cut of the money raised, the rest goes to funding freelance artists to complete the jobs we need to outsource.
Character Models are the largest part of this budget. AAA quality character models cost a pretty penny to have made, but will bring so much polish and diversity to the finished game; allowing us to offer our players characters they can customize to their perfect vision of an Ursine hero! Your funding will allow us to create all five Ursine tribe types, male and female, young, old, lean, heavy, the customizing options will be amazing! = $5,000
Enemy Models are the second largest part of the budget, it wouldn't be fair to leave the bad guys looking less than their best next to our awesome Ursine warriors. Your funding allows us to commission proper enemy models for you to hack, slash, pierce, and bludgeon! = $1740
Prologue Artwork brings our talented concept artist dleoblack out of the background and into the game as he hand paints the prologue sequence that will play at the start of the game. With your help we'll be able to start production on this art so that the opening sequence can be finished in time to animate it as well! = $1000
Detail Concepts will allow us to add weapon/armor concepts as well as additional concepts for each area showing more details to the artists. We currently have only two pieces of concept art per location and the art team could use more concepts with more detail to guide them. The better the concept art details, the faster the production goes. More artwork also means more pages in your digital artbooks! = $1000
Kickstarter/Amazon have to pay the dues for using this awesome program and getting our problem to the people who can help = $760
To keep costs low, we are not offering many physical rewards, but we have lots of great stuff to make pledging worth your time! And digital goods mean no long waits for your rewards, no shipping, and no limited quantities! For just $5 you gain membership to the Druid Origin Guild and access the inside track to our development!
What is the Origin Guild Collage?
The collage is a huge banner image similar to the graphic below. Every member of the Druid Origin Guild is asked to submit a personal photo or avatar to represent themselves in the collage. The images will be fit to form the words "Druid Origin Guild". When the doors to the guild close this banner will hang on our website so that the world can see the people who made our success possible. That's not even the best part! When we move from remote development to a physical studio, we plan to have the collage banner screen printed onto a huge physical banner to hang in the reception area of our studio! Each of you will forever be memorialized as the founders of Druid Gameworks, and that is awesome.
Your pledge will have a huge impact on our project but the biggest difference you make is time! Your support gives our artists the time they need to do their jobs while still sticking to our current development schedule. Without you, fundraising will drag on for months before the artists even have a chance to start working on our designs. Those delays also increase the odds of someone else snatching up our artists and making them unavailable to us in the future, which sets us back to more months of recruiting new artists.
We understand some people just can't contribute even though they want to, hey times are tough for a lot of folks, but that doesn't mean you can't help! Share our campaign on your Twitter feeds and Facebook/MySpace pages, rave about us on your YouTube channel, blast some emails out to old friends and clan members!
The more people we have looking at this page the better our chances are at funding so please take a few minutes and badger a friend today to help our cause!
Risks and challenges
What Happens If THIS Kickstarter Fails?
Obviously the best case scenario would be success, it would allow us to continue development with no delays and production would be expedited to deliver the quickest release possible. If our campaign here fails we will continue developing the parts of the game we can without characters, continue recruiting in hopes of finding a quality character artist on a profit share basis, and promoting the Druid Origin Guild, whose memberships have brought us this far, in hopes of raising the money we need to commission the art we require.
There is no chance that the game will fail to be made, our engine is licensed, we will get there, but crowd funding keeps us on schedule for a quick release and allows us to give the project even MORE polish and content! Without Kickstarter, our publishing date will certainly be pushed back and delayed while we nickel and dime our way to "funded".Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The simplest answer is "Wise Men's Lore"
Witanlore is a deeply rooted part of the series universe, a long dead school of study that is on the verge of becoming essential to the modern world at large. Around Arthanswold grow the old growth god trees called Witanwoods. These ancient timbers are said to have been planted by the gods and contain the magics of creation. In times long before the start of our tales, archaic wizards would study these great trees, their significance and connection to the living world, and most importantly how to harness the creation magic inside them.
The practitioners of Witanlore believed that the study of the trees was the way to unravel all the mysteries of the universe and it's that truth, that connection, that our players will seek, save, or destroy as they shape their story within our games.
Thanks to the generosity of private investors we have been able to finance much of our development to date. While extra money is always good in a development budget we don’t want to set our Kickstarter above our most basic financial need and that’s $9500. If we raise more we certainly have lots of good uses for it, but our goal, is just the bare minimum of what we need to get past this hurdle.
The majority of our team works on a profit share basis, meaning they don’t get paid until the game sells and generates revenue. This is a tough arrangement for most artists and usually means those who accept it need to supplement their income with other jobs. Some positions on the art team are so specialized that they can easily find paying work elsewhere, so they don’t have to settle for the delayed payout of a profit share contract. In order to fill these roles on our team, we need to contract the jobs out to these paid freelance artists.
We can admit our previous Kickstarters were high for an Indie team!
It’s funny how when a couple of guys decide to break into Indie Development folks have all kinds of advice to offer. Upon hearing the news almost everyone said “Hey great, you can do a Kickstarter!” and linked us to a bunch of successful gaming campaigns. Naively we thought the idea was to put together a plan/budget for the best game we could possibly make and still come way under the goals achieved by these others. Turns out it’s not that simple. There were a lot of other factors to consider but a combination of being completely unfamiliar with Kickstarter and only a few weeks into development, left us overly ambitious in regards to crowd funding. It really was the sort of lesson you can only learn by going through the process, and we learned a lot, made some amazing fans and friends here, and came out better for it overall.
Witanlore: Dreamtime is planned for a Windows PC release only. We’re not closing any doors, it’s possible that once released we may do some conversions for other platforms, but for now focusing on one platform allows us to keep our project scope simplified.
The game will have a toggle feature to switch between first person and third person, as well as a zoom feature for examining detailed environment clues.
The planned combat style will be free form, not turn based or command prompted, though you will be able to give companions strategic commands and set their fight style before engaging an enemy.
We plan to sell a DRM Free digital version on our website as part of our public release, provided it's not a violation of our other distribution agreements.
Yes, we sure do!

Not yet, but as the campaign goes on we will introduce some. You can add onto your pledge at any time.
Physical rewards cost money to manufacture and ship and our goal is very small; it will only cover our needs and costs associated with running a Kickstarter. However, if we raise more than our goal we may be able to offer some physical rewards.
Yes! On both of our previous Kickstarters you can still see the old series title too.
During our 2013 Kickstarter campaigns, we were approached by another studio who had chosen a similar title for their series. After their Kickstarter succeeded they began to reportedly have legal trouble from DC Comics which produces a graphic novel series titled "The Unwritten" and took issue with the similarities to their series. It would seem by this example, once our game starts to generate a decent revenue, we will likely receive the same alleged attention. This means we would either face a costly legal battle or a costly PR battle when we have to rename the series post publishing. If we renamed the series we could do so with little hassle and it was early enough to renew our brand, so "Unwritten" was changed to "Witanlore"
Echoes of Twilight is still in development, just very low on the active duty list right now. We designed Dreamtime to be a low budget introduction to our universe in hopes that the sales from Dreamtime would be enough to fund development on Echoes of Twilight; which costs much more to make. So once Dreamtime is complete you will see news and development movement on Echoes of Twilight.
Good question! For the $20 tier you get a lot more than just a game pass, but your game pass IS special. Unlike folks post release who will pay episodically to get the full game, your pass is good for the complete game, not just a single episode! The $20 pledge is basically the retail value of the game, you get everything else as a bonus!
It IS! Well it's hard to make a T-Shirt spectacular, but what's special about the shirt on this reward tier is that it's a developer shirt, the ones ONLY issued to actual employees of Druid Gameworks Studios, with your name or ID emblazoned on the back as part of our team. Yes it's a T-shirt, but other than getting a job in the company, there's no other way to get one outside of our Kickstarter, that's pretty fancy. :D
