About this project
Who whispers "fire" when their home is ablaze?
We need your financial support to complete this film! The entire team is working on contingency; that’s how much we believe in the need to produce this documentary, and to produce it now. Consider:
Fact: There are more than 300 million Americans.
Fact: African-Americans are 13% of the U.S. population.
Fact: African-Americans account for 50% of all those newly infected with the HIV virus annually.
Fact: The numbers are still growing...
What was once considered a disease of white, gay males and IV-drug users has now spread widely among ALL sectors of the black community.
Our film, Thirteen Percent, is an exploratory journey asking political leaders, medical doctors, media personalities and members of the religious community, “How so?” Why is it that 13% of America's population is so disproportionately affected by the HIV virus, at the staggering rate of 50% annually?
More importantly, Thirteen Percent also follows the lives of several individuals representing three of the hardest-hit sectors of the black community:
Men having sex with men (MSM)
Young people between the ages of 13-29
Women in their prime child-bearing years (24-35).
This last group, black women, is what particularly drives the urgency of Thirteen Percent; they are are not just getting HIV/AIDS at alarmingly high rates, but are dying in greater numbers than any other sector.
Fact: Women are the progenitors of a culture.
Fact: When women in prime child-bearing ages cease to bear children and start dying in large numbers, it is the beginning of the end of that culture.
Fact: The Inca and Aztec cultures are extinct today.
- Fact: They disappeared primarily due to disease.
Most major media have have turned a blind eye to this social plague that is silently engulfing American's black communities. HBO has seen the production trailer and now wishes to see the rough cut. With your help we can produce a rough cut of Thirteen Percent with a creativity and quality that will ensure HBO will want to air our film. It will also inspire organizations across the country to show and promote it.
Our partner, The Balm In Gilead (which educates through churches), have signed on to host community screenings when the documentary debuts at the International AIDS Conference in July.
Initial support was made possible by an unsolicited contribution from Riverside Baptist Church (SW), Washington, DC.
Your contribution will go a long way towards making Thirteen Percent a reality.
