Young inventor Walter Wells, struggles to transform his grandfather's failed inventions into the stunning sport of Cloudsurfing.
The Invention of Cloudsurfing was written to help inspire future generations of inventors, dreamers and thrill seekers. A live action, stereo 3D short film introduction to dare devil young inventor, Walter Wells as he struggles to turn his grandfather's failed inventions into a stunning new sport.
This production began as my Masters of Fine Arts in Visual Effects Graduate Thesis visual component towards my degree progress. The moment Walt is finally able to achieve cloudsurfing with his grandfather's inventions, is the very moment Walt begins to see his future path as a prolific inventor.
It’s been an honor to watch this production grow with the many highly talented individuals that have come on board. I’ve been funding the production with work I’ve done on feature films, commercials and music videos while in school. As this production has grown to fit the needs of the story, the budget must also grow if we are to continue with our high bar of quality that we have set for ourselves. This is a student production that is also helping to create great portfolio work for everyone involved. The funds raised through Kickstarter will go towards the production costs of shooting the remaining shots needed for this action packed short film. We’ve already seen outstanding support from our school, the Savannah College of Art and Design. The Invention of Cloudsurfing has become a large scale collaborative production between many departments. Phenomenal stereo cinematography professor, Joerg Schodl came on board early as director of photography. Gifted performing arts professor, Stephen Geller brings 45+ years of industry experience breathing life into the character of Walt’s grandfather, J.P. Wells (Gramps). There has been an outpouring of student support as well. We’ve gained many highly talented students in industrial design, film, visual effects, animation, production design, sound design, game design and many others, all seeking to make this production as amazing as possible.
The concept is very loosely based Kit Cloudkicker from Disney's TaleSpin. With the idea: What if surfing on clouds, behind a plane could actually be achieved? What would it take?
If you're interested in seeing this action packed short film, beautifully projected on a big screen and future handheld devises in stereo 3D, please support our cause! If we receive more funding than is listed on our KS page we will use that additional funding to enhance the project. With any film, funding directly correlates to quality

As the adage goes: Time, Money, Quality. . . Pick two.
We're taking our time on this production to ensure that it is of the highest quality from the character development, to the story, to full HD output with seamless stereo 3D convergence of every shot, down to the to the efficiency at which we render our entirely computer generated clouds. Time and quality are what we have on our side, money is not. Between now and June 1st, I will be plugging away in post production ensuring that every element of this stunning visual story is handled with extreme care. Our teams are working rendering volumetric clouds, animating the board and gyro engine and defining the stereo 3D convergence per shot. Many people's jaws drop when they hear about a 15 minute film taking this long, while others know the true endurance it takes to stay with such a passion project for years to see it through to completion.
We've been working on compositing the green screen elements, and will be shooting the remaining elements in the weeks ahead. Everything is on the schedule and seems to be moving along with quite a good pace, picking up efficiency with every new day.
I've been working in post production for over ten years and have been obsessed with the technicalities of how film's visual stories are constructed for even longer. Film making and visual storytelling are my most extreme passions. I do them everyday around the the clock because it's the only think I can think about constantly, even when I try to sleep. I love films, visual effects and taking viewers on rides they cannot currently experience in everyday life. Those are some of the things that qualify me to see this production through to the end, and I hope you join us for the rest of the ride.
