If you love Star Wars I expect you're already excited about this. If you love oil paintings done with skill, sensitivity, careful observation and love for the subject, you're in the right place too: I'm doing still life paintings of the lightsabers from A New Hope, and making prints of them. The paintings are each 8x12 inches, with life sized lightsabers.
This isn't a Lucasfilm project, and I won't be using film stills or promotional photos. I'll be using my own replicas, each customized, lit, and staged for these specific paintings. While painting I'll be paying special attention to light, details, and atmosphere -- just like in the rest of my work, really.
When they're done we'll photograph them and make prints for you. The original artwork will be available, as will four commission slots for oil sketches of saber hilts in my collection. I believe art makes life better and I'm doing my best to make something you'll love for years to come, no matter which option you choose.
Each painting is 8x12 inches (20x30.5 cm), oil on panel.
Reward options include 8x10 inch (20x25 cm) and 12x16 inch (30.5x40.6 cm) prints on photo paper, 8x12 inch (20x30.5 cm) canvas prints, up to four 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) oil sketch commissions, and the 8x12 inch (20x30.5 cm) Original oil paintings.
The 12x16 inch prints and 8x12 inch canvas prints are actual size reproductions, with life-size lightsabers.
8x10 prints for $25 each or $75 per set of three.
12x16 prints for $40 each or $90 per set of three.
Hand painted embellishments on canvas print: $100 per print. (Only available on canvas prints.)
Risks and challenges
There are essentially 3 challenges for this project. 1, Getting the paintings done in time, 2, Getting the prints made in time, and 3, getting the art shipped in time.
I started my professional art career about 20 years ago and have quite a bit of experience doing high level work on a deadline – and I also have a head start on these paintings. Things are totally under control on that front.
As for production and shipping, I've worked with my printer for more than a decade. They're local which makes for quick and easy communication and they have years of experience doing order fulfillment. They're on board for this project and have also begun preparing, so we're in good shape there too.
I know the December delivery date looks a bit suspicious, so to hedge our bets there is a “12x16 Ship Me First” option. If time is a big concern for you select that, don't complicate it with add ons, return your survey promptly, and we'll take care of you.
This is my first Kickstarter project, and I want to start out on the right foot. With the tight schedule we're working with I've been very careful to keep this project well within our expertise. I feel like we've been able to get risks down to the level of a car accident or falling on the stairs – so I'm being careful about those too.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
