A heist gone wrong in 2050. Heat meets Lord of the Rings.
An Urban SciFi Fantasy
Metroplex is an adrenaline packed SciFi short concept film full of action, suspense and a lot of bullets.
Set in 2050, the world is co-inhabited by humans, trolls, elves, dwarves, and dragons. Official governments no longer exist, instead laws are enforced by mega corporations through private security forces. Large sprawling cities called METROPLEX'S are divided into autonomous districts, each self governing and at odds with one another.
The film centres around Avin Sull, a hardened career criminal that leads a team of mercenaries on a heist to steal the CODEX, a mysterious virtual book buried deep inside the Disconnect, a digital world representing all that is left of the shattered remains of the internet and fiercely controlled by virtual and real armed guards. Betrayed by Yamada Kitashiano, a lawyer to the Yoko-gumi Yukuza clan, who initially gave them the job, they must now all fight to stay alive at all costs.
The 10 min live action short will act as a stand alone high octane piece of entertainment but also act as a proof of concept for a feature film that will hopefully spark interest in getting the project off the ground. It's highly ambitious and that's why we're here on Kickstarter to prove that there is an audience out there that wants to see films like this get made.
METROPLEX is an idea I've been working on for a number of years. It a sort of cross between Heat and Lord of the Rings, a serious crime thriller filled with magic, fantastical creatures and lots... of... guns. Having grown up playing tabletop games like Shadowrun, I've always loved the idea of creating a film set in a similar world and so started working on the story for METROPLEX. Now with the script ready, I'd love to make it a reality with your help.
We're the creative team that brought you the dystopian proof of concept thriller BIOPUNK and the post apocalyptic comedy THE FITZROY!
Our creative team have worked together on a number of projects and is made up of long-time friends and collaborators: myself, director Liam Garvo, Director of Photography Ciro Candia, Production Designer Natalie O'Connor and writer Andrew Harmer.
Before METROPLEX we all worked together on BIOPUNK, a short SciFi dystopian thriller that I directed as a proof of concept for a feature film. BIOPUNK was successfully funded here on Kickstarter last year. And since then we have been working hard in the background to get the feature version of that film made.
You can check out the teaser for BIOPUNK and THE FITZROY below.
And if you want you can view the full concept film for BIOPUNK on the DUST YouTube channel here.

Sam has depicted a future world of urban decay, setting the tone of the film. Armed private security forces patrol the streets of METROPLEX as citizens continue on about their business on a knife edge of normalcy and danger.
Vincentius takes us up close and personal in a rain of bullets. Below he captures a scene from the film of a mercenary laying down fire to protect her comrades.
Avin Sull discusses the heist with his employer, Yamada Kitashiano in a traditional chashitsu.
Every good story needs a bad guy. Ours is a dragon.
Neil Emmanuel has created some fantastic character sketches adding amazing detail to some of our main roles. Each totally unique and inspiring.
Again the super talented Neil Emmanuel has been working tirelessly behind the scenes storyboarding the film. Check out some of the boards below!
To pull off the visual effects (VFX) in METROPLEX we're working with one of the hottest outfits in London, Territory Studio. They've worked on some of the biggest eye popping films around from Blade Runner 2049, Ready Player One, Pacific Rim Uprising, Ghost in the Shell, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy, Prometheus, and The Martian, just to name a few! So we're in good hands.
Check out their work on Pacific Rim Uprising.
And their Blade Runner 2049 reel.
To bring the fantastical creatures in METROPLEX to life I'm working with Dan Martin.
Dan has done prosthetics for A Field in England, the ABCs of Death 2, and Journeyman. He has also worked on the special effects for High Rise, Nina Forever, Utopia, and The Wolfman as well as a host of other films over the past 15 years. Dan will be working on the prosthetics for our elves and trolls.
For me, the music is an integral part of the filmmaking process in creating the right mood and atmosphere and I'm really excited to be working with the extraordinarily talented Joseph Trapanese. Joe has written and composed the music and soundtracks for some of the biggest SciFi and actions films in recent memory.
Have a listen to one of Joe's tracks on SoundCloud for Tron: Uprising.
If you want to have a further listen to Joe's work you can get stuck in below:

Risks and challenges
METROPLEX is a super ambitious project and that's why I'm here on Kickstarter. With the backing and support of the community I hope we can prove that there's an audience out there looking for these types of films to get made. It won't be easy and there are bound to be challenges along the way but having worked together on so many other projects previously, we've gotten pretty good at being inventive!
Physical rewards can have a nasty habit of eating into the budget, ultimately affecting what ends up on screen. That's why our lower tiered rewards are all digital and only the higher tiers have physical perks. Having done previous Kickstarter campaigns we have carefully selected rewards that we know we can fulfil in a timely manner. As with all things there may be setbacks along the way but we'll be sure to keep you up to date with everything that is happening.
