New Demo you can Download!

I made a demo of the game in its current state that everyone can now download.  It's basically a demo of what you'll get with the OUYA CUT FOR PC reward tier, except that it ends in the third "Dungeon" (same as the actual OUYA game demo).  Check it out!

From OUYA to Windows

The Secret of Universe Alpha started as a project for the OUYA game console, a brand new budget game system.  I started with a top-down space shooter, and tweaked the controls to be fun to just fly around shooting asteroids, and then I designed a full shooter game around that with Zelda-style exploration and puzzles.  I just love games that give that feeling of exploration, and wanted to craft one myself.  Unfortunately, I didn't have very much time at all to make the game, nor much of a budget to have art made specifically for the game.  But I finished the game anyways! It is an OUYA launch title, and can now be purchased and played on the OUYA.

What I want to do now is bring Universe Alpha to Windows (hopefully under Steam), while making it the game I originally dreamed of, a true Director's Cut.  So I want to pay an artist to improve (or replace) much of the artwork, while I go in and polish the game, add more levels and more enemies, and rework a couple of the existing levels and enemies to play better.  

Don't worry, OUYA owners, I'm not going to leave you behind - should this Kickstarter get fully funded, any improvements I make for the Director's Cut will also make it into the OUYA version.

The Need for Funding

This isn't a hobby, I've been working on this game for more than full-time. Sadly, one cannot survive on passion, devotion and hard work alone. A developer needs to eat too, and pay rent! There's also other costs as well that come with making a decent game, such as various software tools (I've been using a tool called Unity, for example, for the Director's Cut I'm going to upgrade to Unity Pro) and different hardware to test with (like various game controllers).  And I'll need more music for the new levels, and of course I need to find and pay an artist to fix up the game's look, and maybe even get the help of a dedicated level designer.

What about other platforms?

People who buy the old game on OUYA get the Director's Cut for free, but there are of course other platforms out there than just Windows and OUYA.  I'd really like to concentrate on making the Windows version the best it can be, but I have other platforms in mind as stretch goals (hint: Mac will be the first).

Risks and challenges

Entertainment software development is always difficult. A successful game must work well feature-by-feature and be compelling and fun at all times to sustain player interest. "Fun" is very hard to define on paper, and is further complicated when tasked with integrating complex features that the players will find fulfilling. This iterative experimental process creates inherent risks in game development.

Luckily, I've already done the hard, riskiest part - The Secret of Universe Alpha is already a complete game, that I and other people think is fun. And my many years of experience as a gameplay programmer will allow me to add to the game without ruining that fun.

The other big risk is in making sure I find a good quality artist (or two), but luckily I have a number of connections in the game industry, I'm sure I can get some great artwork for the Director's Cut.
