Fantasy Dynasty: Civilization meets Crusader Kings
Forge your Dynasty and make your Bloodline stand the test of time in this strategy title inspired by Civilization and Crusader Kings.
Play as an elf, a human or orc leader, and lead your people into becoming a new civilization.
Start out with a primitive village, and make your way across an impressive number of possible paths!
Or die a shameful death and see your Heir hunted by your rivals in a War of Succession, betrayed by your vassals... and old allies.
Please make yourself at ease and listen to this music from the game soundtrack while reading:
Pledges at the Beta level (and above) also receive an exclusive Kickstarter scenario.
Pledges at the Founder level (and above) will also receive a special digital bonus called the "Founder Challenges". It is a collection of beast variants and special loot that they may activate before beginning a new game!
Mixing inspiration from Dominions 3: The Awakening, Civilization and Crusader Kings, the game is a turn by turn grand strategy simulation.
Grand strategy has rarely been taken to the fantasy scene.
Swords and magic, dark rituals, forgotten gods and cursed lands all blend in Fantasy Dynasty. They deepen the challenges you will face and decisions you will have to make.
Before I go on, you should know that I believe in mods.
Fantasy Dynasty supports mods.
The whole game exposes all its values as a "vanilla" mod, and you may create a race, a culture, a weapon, a monster, a technology by adding simple lines of texts in a text file!
You play as the leader of your civilization, as a character fully detailed with roleplaying attributes, class and experience.
You will transfer power to your legitimate heir upon your death.
However, if the legitimacy of your heir becomes low, a war of succession may occur. If you are defeated - thus failing to become king again - your game will be over!
You must then watch and fear your own vassals when playing, as much, or even more, than enemy kingdoms.
If you have time, please take a look at this long footage preview to get a closer feel of the game.
Viewers beware! It is a prototype of the game, a short preview of the footage, and there is a french guy there explaining things at length! Are you daring enough?
The game mechanics will be covered in detail in the game updates, so please check the Updates tab to view more about the game simulation!
Your King or Queen has a group of followers at his Court. You will reward their loyalties with titles and privileges. Quickly you will be surrounded with a group of (ambitious) Advisors, and (selfish) Lords administrating your regions.
These characters of note follow their own agenda; this may include serving you faithfully to their death... or something nastier!
Every citizen in your kingdom (and in other kingdoms) also behaves as an individual with its own age, gender and needs. Women will give birth, children will be raised, then educated into specialists, people will become of old age, and eventually die.
Mages will try to teach their art to other people, and warriors will train other fighters. Spies could infiltrate your kingdom as citizens and your Lords could even serve another power than yourself.
Note that cultists may also act in the dark, sacrifying your citizens without your Advisor noticing it (but maybe your Advisor is the secret leader of these cultists?).
This engine works automatically and without any requirement from yourself. It also provides a strategic canvas where your own decisions will be central! Everything you do and build may have a strong effect.
Note that this system already works in the current build. Most of the "behind-the-scene" work is already in the build; most of the development to make is for the front scenes and UI.
More about game mechanics: (added as time goes)
.... know that I LOVE to share every possible detail about the game, so do not hesitate to ask more about a specific topic!
The world of Fantasy Dynasty is based on a full indie roleplaying game, so there is much to know about the game and its story.
This movie will show you some of the events that led to the rebirth of your civilization:
Despite deep mechanics, the game can be played intuitively.
But that doesn't meanwe have to hide its inner workings!
There will be no hidden RNG factor in the game. I want everything to be explained, as should be in a full moddable game!
The Compendium acts as a story book and rulebook, and will provide you with every possible formula about the game.
It is available as a digital reward for all Founders and also as a physical book for people two pledges higher.
Thanks to 10 playable factions and 3 playable races, you will get plenty of reasons to play the game more than once!
Factions have their own unit looks, music tracks, classes and abilities. It is in the mechanics and gameplay that their difference will shine best, as they will all play differently.
Factions evolve and change across the Eras.
Imperials look like Picts during the Primitive Era and will evolve into Roman-like legions in the Antique Era. And then, they'll possibly reach knighthood in the Medieval Era.
Now you have to imagine how this translates applies to exotic human civilizations, or Orcs, or Elves. Maybe one player will be able to make them survive up to the medieval times!
All factions have many paths
Will your medieval orcs have a religious powerbase, with Orc Priestlords ruling in the name of their dark gods, or become Orc Swashbucklers with saber and cannons?
Factions are based on a unique history and legacy
You will discover their past in the campaigns Fantasy Dynasty will offer. You will often have to choose between restoring this ancient legacy or making a new one.
The Eastern Empire is based on the remains of the Empire of Katagone, a japanese-inspired empire with original aspects. It is a land empire with the best and fiercest cavalry of all times. And black magic wizards. And ties to Fehzul, the God of Darkness. And assassins. And so much more.
The Kingdom of Sands is based on the Empire of Kazir, a desert middle-eastern empire. Their erudites are famed but also explored the most forbidden knowledge. Their sorcerers contacted powers from other worlds, and in some cases, invited their horrors to our world.
The Desert Tribes are the dark-skinned south Kazirian tribes who took the fiercest fights against the Primals and their minions. I will take here an ingame quote: "... their pride was not in their cities or in their wealth, for they lacked both at this time; but proud they were of the Hsak'ri, the Way of the Hunter. Yours is a legacy of blood and sands, of dire fights with the Primals."
From the asian-inspired Katagonia to the desert lands of Kazir, human dwellings have been strong and numerous.
Of the factions that still bear their legacy, 6 are available as playable factions.
Elves live for centuries. If you play one of the Elven Kings, you will then enjoy a very long reign and attain tremendous power.
Alas, this power doesn't come without a price. And here the price is simple.
There is one important value ingame that is called the Time to Adulthood. Elves have a high TTA; they take many decades before becoming adults.
Their soldiers are trained for decades, and their armies formidable. But despite this power, elves should not involve themselves in petty wars. They just cannot cope with casualties! Elves must look like isolationists to cultures more inclined to growth, expansion and war.
If Elves should enjoy a long reign made of decisions they must think about twice, the same cannot be said about Orcs.
With a very short Time to Adulthood, Orc rulers quickly face new generations challenging their leadership. This usually involves cutting the head of you... their former leader.
As Orc Leaders cannot rely on much time or legacy, they must always prove themselves on the field to retain some power. Orcs use their numbers and fierce strength to take what they cannot build.
Dark Elves and more...
Dark Elves and Dwarves are also mentioned... and available as Stretch Goals!
... and tons of spells and rituals!
This is the kind of content that you will enjoy in Fantasy Dynasty.
The current build already features 107 technologies for the Primitive Era. This is actually more than all the technologies available in an entire Civ episode.
The next two Eras (the Antique Era and the Medieval Era) will propose a comparable amount.
"Volume" doesn't mean much; originality is much more important. I am having much fun with technology design, and many technologies will actually unlock new aspects of the game.
Musical instruments may sound like a cultural tool allowing new citizens to increase happiness. But it also mean discovering drums of war, to boost your soldiers morale. Or powerful war horns to signal your troops in battle.
The next updates will tell you more about technologies and how they are played ingame!
The rewards will grant you a copy of the game; and for the most supporting backers, an access to the Alpha and Beta builds!
The Compendium is the game manual, full of lore and game mechanics . Receiving a physical copy of our Compendium will be a great enhancement to your fantasy experience.
An excerpt of the Compendium will soon be shared on this page.
Tracks they composed or agreed to contribute will be featured in this reward!
For a sample of this experience, you may listen to 6 tracks of the Fantasy Dynasty OST . This music is from the Primitive Era and will accompany your first steps ingame!
I added 2 bonus tracks from other places, as 8tracks requested it, but no one could feel bad about listening to Lindsey or Tryad.
In addition to greatly benefiting the game quality and features, more support will reward you with:
- signatures from the game creator and Peter Siedl, the main artist,
- an original art of yourself,
- your name in the credits section,
- a whole page of credits with a fun fantasy art!
The game creator
I released an update to reveal more about me and the story that led to this Kickstarter.
You may read more about it here!
Composers of Fantasy Dynasty
Let's say it in all honesty: musician artists have always helped the video game scene and been both inspired, generous, and so inspiring with their skills.
So let's take a short time to thank them... and pay them a visit!
Gregory Bakay created his own company with "Mosaique Music". Visit it to enjoy free music tracks!
Zero-Project is a musician artist with millions of listeners on many sites; you may visit his albums here. He also is a composer working on EXODE, another of our projects.
Erdenstern is a group composing and playing scores perfect for the roleplaying experience! If you want to find more of their tracks, feel free to click here. You'll be surprised with the quality of their works and the number of themes they feature; you will be traveling from fantasy to Lovecraft, and from that to the sci-fi genre!
A nice note : according to Kickstarter stats, once the project will be above 20% of its funding, it will have 80% chances to get fully funded. We have to get there!
Make gold flow, and get rewarded with:
- new Campaigns,
- new Races,
- new Game Modes,
- new Character Classes,
... and more!
More about the game will be shared in the next updates!
Remember the game needs you; it can't happen without your help.
Risks and challenges
There is a lot already made in the current game, but there is also a lot to do. Some of the main challenges expected for such a game are described below; more is also described in the FAQ sections.
ONE MORE TURN...
Players must feel committed to the game; gameplay must be addictive enough to get that "one more turn" experience!
This is a main objective.
However the formula behind the "one more turn effect" is hard to catch. Many great titles made by experienced designers still failed to make it happen. Fantasy Dynasty must provide it.
...AND ONE MORE GAME!
How about giving the players a game they can play over and over again?
I can guarantee we'll have the content for many playthroughs in Fantasy Dynasty.
But the main job here will be to make the content "shine". Having loads and loads of content is great, but it also must be organized.
The UI must address that need.
UI design is an important part of games today, and as a one-man studio it is something that I often have to work on a lot without having the best results.
If we exceed expectations on this funding, I could consider hiring someone to improve and deliver on the UIs and help organize the massive contents available ingame.
In addition to that, there will be bugs.
Dire ones, critical ones, crashing ones...
Development cycles must include fixes and features on a regular basis.
That is the reason why funding is important; it allows more development workforce, more focus, and makes it possible to fix and upgrade at the same time.
Last but not least, vour playtests and feedback will also be very important to help balance the game and make sure it plays smoothly!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
