About this project
BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules
Back in the beginning of 2013, Dreamscape Design (that's me) launched a little retroclone intended to faithfully model the "Holmes" edition of the worlds best-known role-playing game. The BLUEHOLME™ Prentice Rules, like the original Holmes Basic book, only covered character levels 1 through 3.
The stand-alone BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules go much further than that.
- Character levels 1 through 20
- Over 230 spells for clerics and magic-users
- Over 120 creatures, including may sub-types
- Over 250 magic items
- Rules for combining character classes
- Rules for playing any species in the creature chapter
- Rules for adventuring in the Wilderness and in the Realm
- 115 pages in 8.5" x 11" format
The Journeymanne Rules are more just than an accurate rendition of "Holmes" edition game-play, they draw from a wide range of sources to more closely model the eclectic and unique approach to the game promoted by Dr J. Eric Holmes himself. In BLUEHOLME™, anything goes - but the dice never lie!
What's this Kickstarter about?
I'm glad you asked! This Kickstarter campaign has only one goal - to fund excellent quality interior artwork for the Journeymanne Rules. Stretch goals mean more art, until there are no empty spaces left. That's it - the text has been written, the layout is ready. Once the campaign ends the only thing you're waiting for is the artists to do their thing.
You can already see the outstanding cover art produced by Jean-Francois Beaulieu in the video - his art was commissioned up front, because I believe a creator should have enough faith in his project to invest in it himself. A bevy (is that a proper collective term?) of artists has been lined up to grace the interior pages from cover to cover. In no particular order (click on their names to see more of their amazing work):
- Russ Nicholson
- Del Teigeler
- Scott Buoncristiano
- Denis McCarthy
- Joseph Garcia
- Guillaume Tavernier
- Chris Holmes
- Bryan Syme
- Todd McGowan
- Luigi Castellani
- Andrew DeFelice
- Bradley K. McDevitt
- James V. West
- Chad Thorson
As a teaser, there are already two pieces of art in the book - by none other than Chris Holmes, son of Dr Holmes and the creator of the player characters Boinger the halfling and Zereth the dark elf, two adventurers who went on to star in many of Dr Holmes's short stories and the novel, The Maze of Peril.
HK$5,000 - Funded: Important Art!
The initial funding goal will provide the most important interior art - larger pieces which will set the tone and really bring the game to life, including 3 half-page illustrations by Russ Nicholson. All art will be newly-created for the Journeymanne Rules.
HK$10,000 - Funded: Big Art!
This level of funding will allow the rest of the larger pieces - more images around 1/2 page or so. Now I don't need to fill up those pages with public domain art.
HK$15,000 - Funded: Small Art!
There are lots of important illustrations which give an insight into how rules work in the game world - images around 1/4 page size each. Now this book is looking pretty good, I think you'll agree.
HK$20,000 - Funded: More Small Art!
The remainder of the 1/4 page illustrations unlocked! We're almost there ...
HK$25,000 - Funded: Spot Art!
All those little empty white spaces are looking at you. If we reach this level they will be filled with small but perfectly-formed works of art. The book has reached the pinnacle of perfection!
HK$30,000 - Funded: Character Sheets!
If we reach this level, James V. West will create six illustrated character sheets - one each for clerics, fighters, magic-users, thieves, and fighter-mages, plus a generic type suitable for any class. Note that these will not be in the printed books, but they will be in PDF.
Below is a sample of the sort of thing he creates when he's let loose on a piece of blank paper:
HK$35,000 - Funded: Referee Repository!
There are certain rules every referee needs to refer to time-and-time again. Rather than flip through the rulebook every time, the Referee Repository collects useful charts and tables and clearly presents them in one place for your convenience and "ready reference". And, as this Kickstarter is all about the art, the RR is of course illustrated.
HK$40,000 - Funded: Blueholme Brochure!
The Known World of BLUEHOLME™ will be exposed piece-by-piece through published adventures, a whole raft of which are lined up in the production queue. But you might be wondering about the sort of places within the Realm where characters can safely (?) rest and recuperate between adventures ... or get into worse trouble! The City of Blueholme is one such, hinted at in The Necropolis of Nuromen: one of the independent city states holding the Wilderness at bay. This stretch goal will give you a map of the city, plus enough information to use it as a base for exploration, or even an adventure locale in itself.
HK$45,000 - Funded: Explorer Encounters!
Time is money, and game prep takes time. This illustrated collection of creatures, treasures, tricks, and traps helps the busy referee stock adventures and provide inspiration for encounters. A veritable assortment of monsters & treasure!
PDF of BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules (No Art): The immediate reward for backers is a 115-page PDF of the manuscript, without art. This allows you to see what you're getting in terms of rules, and to imagine what wonders will fill those white spaces. Go to the updates, and scroll down to Update #2 for instructions on how to claim your manuscript.
PDF of BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules (with art): The first reward once the artwork has been completed is a 117-page PDF of the finished rules, including cover and interior art.
PoD Softcover of BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules: After 6 months or so, the book will be made available via print-on-demand. The delay is to ensure that any remaining errata is caught in PDF form before killing any trees. This book will be a perfect-bound softcover with colour covers and black & white interior pages, just like the PDF. Backing at Journeymanne, Master Thief, Lord, or Lady level entitles you to a softback copy of the book (excluding postage). 115 pages, colour cover and black & white interior illustrations.
PoD Hardback of BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules: Released at the same time as the softcover, this will be identical except, of course, for the harder cover. Backing at Maester, Matriarch, Patriarch, or Wizard level entitles you to a hardback copy of the book (excluding postage). 115 pages, colour cover and black & white interior illustrations.
PDF of Illustrated Character Sheets: This pack consists of six beautifully illustrated character sheets by Jams V. West. As well as a generic type suitable for any class, there is one for each of the four basic classes - cleric, fighter, magic-user, and thief. On top of that, one of the most iconic combined classes is represented: the fighting mage, a combination of fighter and magic-user. 6 pages, illustrated
PDF of Referee Repository: A set of useful charts and tables for "ready reference" by the referee, whether at the table or during game preparation. 8 pages, illustrated.
PDF of Blueholme Brochure: A 16" x 11" map of the City of Blueholme, complete with key, encounter tables, and other useful information.
PDF of Explorer Encounters: A collection of tricks, traps, travellers, and treasure waiting for the intrepid adventurer to stumble across. Covers the Realm, Underworld, and the Wilderness. 12 pages, illustrated.
Add-Ons for Journeymanne or Maester
Only if you have pledged as a Journeymanne or Maester can you add extra PoD vouchers to your pledge level if you wish, limited to a total of no more than 3 copies per backer (including the copy under the Journeymanne or Maester reward levels). This is because these prices are basically below cost - you won't see these again once it goes to retail.
+HK$40: (approx. US$5) One more softcover PoD copy of the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules when it becomes available approximately 6 months after PDF publication (postage not included).
+HK$120: (approx. US$15) One more hardback PoD copy of the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules when it becomes available (postage not included).
Add-Ons for Everyone Else
But don't worry! If you have pledged as a Hireling, Master Thief, Lord, Lady, Matriarch, Patriarch, or Wizard you can still get extra PoD copies. This is also the price a Journeymanne or Maester pays for additional PoD books beyond the three discounted books (e.g. a Maester who wants 4 extra softcovers would pay an additional 40 + 40 + 80 + 80 = HK$240).
+HK$80: (approx. US$10) A voucher for one more softcover PoD copy of the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules when it becomes available (postage not included).
+HK$195: (approx. US$25) A voucher for one more hardback PoD copy of the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules when it becomes available (postage not included).

Risks and challenges
The cover art is done. The text is done. The layout is done. All that remains to be done is create the art and insert it into the manuscript.
There is, of course, the risk that the art will take longer than expected - but you can't rush an artist! The biggest risk is that the funding level won't be reached - and that is entirely within your control!
What happens if the stretch goals aren't met? Well, the book will still happen - but any blanks will have to be filled with free public domain art, like in the Prentice Rules.
The only reason for the 6-month wait after publication of the PDF before shipping the physical books is to catch any remaining errata before going to print. The actual task of converting the PDF to PoD takes minutes.
