EEW Mini Status Update

Posted by Maurice Ribble (Creator)

In this week's update I'm going  to describe the current status of all the major components used to make the Mini.  If you just want the quick summary, overall the pre-manufacturing status is on track.

Wooden Case

I have finalized selecting the wood panels and picking a manufacturer to do the laser cutting for all the pieces, but I'm still finalizing the the digital files used to make the actual pieces.  This manufacturer has just mailed me some more samples and those are on the way to me.  It's possible I'll need to do one more round of samples or that these will be the final ones.  Either way I expect to be able to order these pieces around the end of January.

Power Supply

I have selected a supplier for these.  These can be delivered a few weeks after placing the order.

Custom Plastic Pieces

These parts are the black plastic spindle, bobbin, and slide bar.  I have finalized the mold and actually already have a few hundred of these in stock so I can start assembling anytime.  The lead time is 1-2 months and I plan to order more as soon as I get the Kickstarter funds.

Circuit Board and Motor

I have selected a manufacturer for these and have received samples.  One part on the circuit board needs to be changed.  Once I verify that part I can place the order for the circuit boards.  The same company doing the circuit board assembly will be soldering some wires to the motor I selected.

Custom Wire Flyer Slide Hooks

I actually already had these made and they are sitting in my basement.

Miscellaneous Hardware

There are lots of screws, bolts, nuts, and that sort of small parts used to make the Mini.  Most of these are easy to get from multiple sources.  The one exception is that orange pulley on the motor.  I'm still working on getting a good source of those in the quantity I need.  If I can't get those pulleys then I'll have to make a new mold for them, but I'm still hopeful I can just buy the orange pulleys.

What Could Go Wrong?

Most of the above sounds really good, but there are lots of things that all need to happen.  I'm pretty sure there will be some delays that I just can't foresee yet.  Maybe some package will get held up in customs.  Maybe one of my suppliers will go away.  That said I've manufactured many things in the past and I've come to expect a few delays and include those in my schedule.  That means even if there are a few small to moderate delays I should still be on track to shipping all the EEW Minis by the end of June.  So all told I'd say things are on track right now.

I love these updates and someone that anticipates all the difficulties in filling orders when a kickstarter goes far over its goal!
