Hi, I’m Loretta Widen, a photographer and designer out of San Francisco. I spend a lot of my free time traveling with my husband and sharing our adventures on our travel blog, Whole Widen World.
In 2016 we road-tripped around Ireland for our honeymoon. We spent 10 days stopping in places like Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork, Killarney, Galway, and Belfast.
We hiked the windswept Cliffs of Moher, we explored abandoned castles near Galway, and we were serenaded by a traditional Irish band in a lively pub in Belfast.
When we returned from our trip of a life time I couldn’t get Ireland out of my head. I had already taken photos and began to draw and write about what we had seen.
I spent time drawing the mythology, the food, and ancient Celtic symbols. 9 months later and I had a book!
The book is called "Dreaming in Emerald: A Love Letter to Ireland." In it I’ve shared vivid photographs taken from the trip and whimsical illustrations about the culture, the food, and traditional Irish symbols.
My hopes are that it feels like a mini coffee table book. One that will inspire you to get out and explore the beautiful country for yourself.
The regular cost to print one copy of the book is $60, but by backing me today, you can pre-order your own copy for only $40 in this this limited run of books.
Digital Copy + Process PDF
Get a beautiful digital copy of the book in PDF form and see behind the scenes of the making of the book and the kickstarter video.
Digital Art Print
Pick one of eight digital art prints from the book. The print is made 8"x8" and comes on premium matte photo paper. We have a large format printer, so It will be printed and shipped from my house and may arrive separately from the book.
I collaborated with my husband, Jeremy (Widen Wood Works), on some hand made image transfer wooden coasters. They depict four different places in Ireland that gave me pause.
Torc Waterfall - a lively and very popular waterfall in Killarney National Park.
Cliffs of Moher - the magnificent and grand cliffside south of Galway, famous for its height and stunning views.
Dingle Peninsula - empty fields of long grass dancing in the wind against a cloudy blue sky.
Bunratty Castle - a gorgeous view of Ralty River from the top of Bunratty Castle.
The coasters are roughly 4" in diameter with a glossy lacquer finish and a cork bottom. Because the image transfer technique is a chemical technique, the coasters will vary slightly and have a weathered look to them.
Irish Blessing Mug
Enjoy some tea and a warm sentiment with this Irish blessing mug. The opposite side has a Celtic tree of life. The mug will be made by Society6 and will likely ship separately from the book.
A custom hand-made wooden frame
In another collaboration with Widen Wood Works, Jeremy has made beautiful wooden frames. The frame holds your choice of one of my 8"x8" print.
You have a choice of one of three finishes:
Black paint - A modern and slick semi gloss
Shou sugi ban (light) - A Japanese technique of burning wood. We have a lighter treatment where you can still see some of the warmth of the wood shining through or you can choose Shou sugi ban (dark), a double burned look that is almost black.
Finishes In order from front to back: Sho sugi ban (light), Semi gloss black pain, Sho sugi ban (dark)
I have commissioned Sweetpea Beadweaving to create an Ireland Inspired unisex beaded wrap bracelet. It has green and turquoise beads, with a strong leather cord, and copper Celtic and Irish accents; and can be made for any wrist size.
Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal, the book is completed and we're eager to start printing. If we fully fund, then I will be able to publish the run.
In order to make the book printing affordable, we have to print in bulk. The money we are trying to raise covers the limited run bulk price. By donating at least $40 You are essentially pre-ordering the book. We also have padded the cost of the book with the fees included with kickstarter, so that we can break even.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
