About

Become a part of a supernatural mystery and help publish my debut novel.

Hi there. My name is Chris.

That's me, there in the yellow.
That's me, there in the yellow.

I just finished writing my first novel, The Dreadful Objects. I've dreamt of writing novels for my entire life and finally made it happen. The book is finished, but I need your help to have the manuscript professionally edited, typeset, and to develop cover art. The funds from Kickstarter will go directly to paying for these services and ensuring that the book makes it into your hands.

What’s the book about?

The Dreadful Objects is a supernatural mystery. It’s about the power of seemingly ordinary objects to control our everyday lives and even determine our fates. Jamie, the protagonist, inherits his distant uncle’s sprawling estate, after his uncle’s tragic suicide. His uncle is a semi-famous horror novelist, known for his unfinished trilogy, The Dreadful Objects. Each book in the series revolves around a cursed object that creates devastation and destruction in its owner’s life. As Jamie sorts through his uncle’s things, he finds documents that show that his uncle’s works mirror actual events. Only, the events all occurred after the books were written. Jamie must uncover the truth behind his uncle’s books while navigating the complexities of a budding relationship following a string of tragic losses in his own life.

What the story promises:

  • Sprawling mansions
  • Cursed objects and oddities
  • Impromptu roadtrips
  • Australian Cattle Dogs

How do I know if I'll like it?

Take a look at the manuscript draft of the first few chapters here. These chapters will likely change substantially after professional editing and proofreading, but they'll give you an idea whether or not the story is for you. They'll also look a lot better, once the manuscript is professionally typeset. The word count of the current draft is approximately 61,000 words.

I admit that this is my first novel; however, writing has always been a huge part of my life. In fact, I blog about it regularly. I've written short stories, academic articles, and I even wrote for the, now defunct, iPhone and iPad Appstorm tech blog.

Rewards you say?

I've tried to keep the reward tiers simple. All reward tiers come with a copy of the eBook, as well as access to regular backer updates. eBooks will be made available to backers at least a month prior to release for sale to the general public. Reward tiers of $25 or more also come with an autographed paperback. Backers who back at tiers of $100 or more will have their name added to the Special Thanks section in the front of the book. There are even a few higher level rewards, including character naming and early access to the manuscript draft. I'll also investigate stretch goals, if I'm lucky enough to have the project significantly surpass the initial funding goal. If you have an awesome idea for a reward, feel free to send it my way.

Can I purchase more than one paperback?

Absolutely! For backers who've pledged at levels of $25 or more, simply add $20 to your pledge for each additional autographed paperback that you'd like. For example, if you pledge at the $30 level but want an additional paperback, add $20 to your pledge to make your pledge $50 total. You'll indicate the number of books that you'd like in the final backer survey, and I'll verify that your survey response matches your pledge amount. You can add to your pledge at anytime by clicking the "Manage Your Pledge" button, when logged in on the project page.

Why crowdfunding and self-publishing?

As a new author, Kickstarter offers a fantastic way to connect with potential readers and build a community, while offsetting the costs of initial book production. Sure, I could slap together a crappy cover, do some basic typesetting, and upload my book to Amazon, but no one would ever read it. I could also submit to traditional publishers, wait for months or years to get the book out there, and have zero creative control over how it looks and is marketed. I’d rather use the opportunity to acquire new skills, and I plan to use everything that I learn to publish again, and again, and again. This is a very small first step towards my dream of writing full-time.

Why $2000?

The total cost of professional editing, artwork development, and typesetting is approximately $1600. The remaining funds will be used to offset book printing costs, Kickstarter’s processing fee, and taxes related to the project. $2000 won't completely cover the cost of the project, but the remaining costs should be small enough to cover with personal funds. I should have some skin in the game right?

What's the timeline?

I hope to blow this timeline out of the water, but wanted to leave room for unexpected delays.

  • Mid March - Commission cover artwork
  • Mid March - Submit post-Kickstarter manuscript to editors for line edits
  • Late April - Submit updated manuscript to editors for proofreading
  • Mid June - Submit final manuscript for typesetting
  • Early July - Post eBook for all backers and prepare book for print
  • Early July - Place initial paperback order
  • Early August - Use pizza to con friends into helping ship paperbacks to backers

That's great, but I have more questions.

Check out the Faq page.

Thank you so much for checking out my project page. Without support from people like you, this project won't be possible.

Risks and challenges

I didn’t want to go into this project asking for money for something that may never exist, so I’ve eliminated most of the risk by writing the book first. The primary risk is project delay involving the editing and artwork design processes. I've checked the availability of the editors and artists, and this shouldn't be an issue. I'll also need time to incorporate edits. There is a risk that the book will need a major rewrite, but I've built ample time into the delivery dates to accommodate for this. I hope to deliver both the eBook and paperback well before the estimated delivery date, but I would rather promise a later delivery date and surprise backers than disappoint them with late deliveries.
