Hello. I'm Janie Skuse, I'm an artist, and I run the DiningRoomDrawingClub. Originally a series of free open-submission drawing shows in non-gallery spaces, we now also invite people to come and draw with us in exciting/interesting/derelict/mind-bending and/or inaccessible places. We draw for a limited period of time, usually one or two days, then exhibit whatever we've made in a public exhibition in the space itself.
We never know what will happen, and it is the most fearsome, challenging and exciting thing ever.
On 1st October this year, we're starting the biggest thing we've done yet!
We are taking over a HUGE and beautiful building in Brixton (see W-O-W photo below) and drawing in it for SIX whole days.
Now, this sounded good already, but we started to think that if we had just a little bit more money, we would be able to expand the project wildly, and make it much broader, more inclusive (more for free) and have a whole programme of events running alongside the drawing; talks, dance, live music, film, printmaking, international Skype-portrait drawing (amazing!) - all inspired by the beautiful building.
And that is where you come in...
To enable us to run the programme we need just £2000, which will mean that not only can we pay our artists, including 10 artists in residence, performers, musicians etc, where possible, (always a good principle) - and pay for the hire of Brixton East itself, but that we can run most of the programme as free to enter - with only a few very special ticketed events, like an Art Historian Nicholas Friend's lecture on 1871, the year Brixton East first opened.
You will also enable us to publish and display a set of 10 limited edition prints by 10 of the artists taking part, in a series specially commissioned for The Brixton Drawing Project, called, kind of predictably...'10x10'. 10 editions of 10 prints by 10 artists.
And we want as many people as possible to come to Brixton in October to join in! Everyone will be welcome, for 1 minute or 1 week, to draw with us, have a tea, wander about, watch us work, see whats up. We will be making a world of amazing site-specific collaborative happenings and goings-on, with everyone working together for 6 days, culminating in a spectacular exhibition of everyone's work, in the space.
So...are you in?
This is the biggest project that we at the Dining Room Drawing Club have ever put together. It is gut-twistingly frightening, and breathlessly exciting. Support us if you have ever been so excited about something that you can barely stand up...
Risks and challenges
There are many challenges that come with putting together a project that involves a lot of people, working together to produce something amazing.
It is possible that we will have 9 artists-in-residence instead of 10, for example, or that there are production issues with the 10 x 10 prints that will mean we are late with delivery. Potentially one of our speakers may not arrive on time, or at all, or the beautiful building itself may suffer some terrible calamity that means that we won't be able to open at all.
The diningroomdrawingclub is made up of a core of artists who are all experienced in delivering successful public events. We will have contingency plans in place for lecturers being stuck on trains, for example, and although if the building has to close it is unlikely that we will be able to house the whole project in another space nearby, there are several options, including hosting the majority of the supporting events in a local pub. It would be a very different project, but we would 100% find a way to pull together and go ahead.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For 6 days, Brixton East is going to be THE BEST place to be. Open to the public from 10 am - late, Tuesday - Sunday, with a gallery/lounge/bar downstairs, events, lectures and happenings upstairs, and drawing all over the place, come and spend some time with us. There will be lovely things in the shop, tea/coffee/cake and gin.
And if you do want to draw (if you arrive and are overwhelmed by a need to do your first drawing in 20 years...) then you can! We'll provide everything you need.
Well - its very hard to predict, but this is a project that will benefit from as many people as can squeeze into Brixton East taking part, and so that is what we will be aiming for!
The count begins with the 10 artists in residence, working in the space throughout the week. We then add people who will be popping in here and there, another 20. Then those taking part in specific events, such as the 1871 lecture - 50 people, and Julia Kay's Portrait Party, potentially another 50, plus several more, so,say the count is now about 150. Then take into account the fact that we are listed with both Lambeth Open and The Big Draw - and think about the people who wander in, or come to hear the music, and then come back because its wonderful.
I think its reasonable safe to hope that a minimum of 300 people will experience and engage with the Brixton Drawing Project during its 6 day run.
