Drank The Gold's new album: Sipped The Silver

...first, let us introduce ourselves...

“At times, they dived into the track of the moon in the dark sea water and opened their mouths to swallow the silver.  At times, they plunged into the path of the sun in the green-blue ocean and opened their mouths and drank the gold.”
  — Pat O’Shea, The Hounds of the Morrigan

From Upstate New York, Oona Grady, vocals/fiddle/viola, and James Gascoyne, vocals/guitar/banjo, play and sing North Atlantic dance tunes and folk songs.

Steeped in Irish music for as far back as she can remember, Oona spent many years living in Cork, Ireland, where she honed her skills as a fiddle player and Irish music specialist.  Upon moving back to her hometown of Ithaca, NY, Oona immersed herself in the local traditional music scene and incorporated old time and Cajun tunes into her repertoire.

Growing up outside Louisville, KY, James was surrounded by music from an early age; radio, vinyl records, church music, and live concerts were a part of daily life. Finding his own musical style as an adult, James always keeps his ears open for sounds – new, old, familiar, or strange. While singing and playing guitar and banjo with Drank The Gold, he delves into the traditions of American old time and Irish dance tunes, while keeping true to his borderless, experimental musical roots.

Now based in Saratoga Springs, NY, Oona and James collaborate as Drank The Gold, bringing new perspectives and innovative arrangements to the music they love. Craic agus ceol (good times and music)!

...the project: Sipped The Silver...

In March of this year we traveled to Oona's hometown of Ithaca, NY, and recorded an album's worth of material over two days.  It was an intense and focused time, but the once the recording gear was set up, the music bubbled out of us!  These are tunes and songs that we have been playing over the past months and years, honing the arrangements and locking into a groove.

We traveled back to Ithaca the following month to do a day of mixing, and have spent the subsequent months coordinating all the other details involved in producing an album (more on that below).

We chose Sipped The Silver as the title for this project in reference to the quote above - the same quote where we got our band name.  A bit obscure, but we like the ambiguity and the poetry of it!

...the space: Electric Wilburland...

We have been really lucky to work with Will Russell at Electric Wilburland in Newfield, NY (a small town outside of Ithaca).  The studio is situated in an old church next to the oldest covered bridge still in use in New York State.  A beautiful and serene and inspiring space - good vibes abound!

We tried setting up in a few different spots, and eventually chose this corner up on the stage.  We sat facing each other and played without headphones, as if we were in our own living room!  Will set up the microphones with care to pick up the best sound possible, yet not disturbing our performance.

...the material: Twelve Tracks...

We played some of our favorite tunes and songs, two or three takes each, choosing the next piece organically, following the flow.  In the end, we found ourselves with twelve tracks that we feel represent our current work as a band.

Our main source of inspiration is various North Atlantic fiddle and folk music traditions, especially Irish and Appalachian old time music.  Some tunes came out sounding somewhat similar to how we learned them, with simple duet arrangements.  James wrote four of the tracks, and we worked up arrangements on fiddle/viola and banjo.

And the rest of the music falls somewhere in that beautiful grey area between traditional and original!

A couple of sneak peaks: James "ruined" a set of Irish jigs by playing them in a different time signature on the banjo; he also adjusted the feel of an Irish song by playing it on the banjo.  {insert banjo joke here!}  And Oona experimented with the mode of an Irish reel, dramatically changing the mood to suit the title.

Though the material comes from many disparate sources, we can't help but play it sounding like us, putting our Drank The Gold stamp on it.

...the people involved: an amazing crew...

We have been supported from start to finish by experts in their fields!

Will Russell (engineering and mixing) is a grammy winning engineer who has made this process feel "easy" from start to finish.

Dana Billings mastered the album beautifully, taking our requests and nailing them on the first try.

Elizabeth Pedinotti Haynes took so many gorgeous (and flattering!) photos of us during our photo shoot that we agonized for hours trying to choose which ones to use.

Mike O'Donnell has taken the graphic design to the next level, while also being positive and encouraging about our own graphic contributions.

And, last but not least, Pat Burke has shepherded this project to completion, offering trusted advice and insight into the business of music making.

We are so proud of this album, and of all that these folks have done to help make it great!

...how you can help: action steps...

We appreciate all of the support we have already received over the years, from the venues that have hired us, to our families, and of course to everyone who has enjoyed our music!  THANK YOU!

Have a look at the pledge rewards and see what appeals: first and foremost, we'd love for you to use this Kickstarter campaign as a way to PRE-ORDER THE NEW ALBUM - get the CD if you still have a player, or even if you don't (it includes beautiful album art + a DTG designed sticker: keep it on your coffee table!).  If you have gone purely digital, we have that option too.

If you are able to give a larger pledge, we have a lot of options: support Oona's newfound obsession with block printing by ordering a set of cards or a t-shirt; sign up for a lesson with one or both of us; or get James to write you a tune.  Last but not least, we'd absolutely love to come and play a house concert for you in your living room with all of your favorite friends!

However you are able to help us along the way to making this project a reality, thank you!  Like we said above, the music is recorded and we're very proud of it, and can't wait to share it with the world!

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge we see in launching this Kickstarter campaign is getting the word out and receiving enough pledges in just a couple of weeks. The way Kickstarter works, we won't get any of the money raised here unless we reach our goal by July 17th.

The music for the album is recorded, mixed, and mastered. The photos are taken. The graphic design is in progress, and we are nearly ready to send the whole project to press.

Please support in whatever way you can, including sharing widely with friends!
