I created that simple Cyborg Highway game jam for Ludum Dare 44. I've gotten a lot of very positive feedback, and I'd love to make a full game of it:

  • Story campaign
  • Unlock powers and upgrades
  • New enemies, boss fights
  • Tuned gameplay
  • Many more vehicles, with gameplay significance
  • Varied highways
  • Always fast paced and fun
  • Focus on leveraging vehicles and other terrain

Ludum Dare 44 Game Jam Entry

Ludum Dare is the oldest and largest online game jam, wherein individuals or small teams make games from scratch in two to three days.

Inspirations

This game is principally inspired by movies like Matrix: Reloaded and Black Panther wherein super-powered combatants are fighting not in vehicles but upon them. This principle has made for some fantastic action scenes, but seems under-explored in interactive media. Let's change that!

To accomplish such a scene on a very tight schedule, I went with a Frogger-inspired viewpoint.

Crowdfunding

As excited as I am by this project, I have two darling daughters to feed, so I need a bit of up-front capital to bring this properly to fruition in a reasonable timeframe. That's where you all come in! Jump in right away and help make this vision a reality.

Some Details

Here's a brief sampling of the features I have planned:

Environment

Fewer lanes and a closer, following camera. On and off ramps. Bullet trains that periodically go by the top most lane, and then go into tunnels. Buildings to wall-jump off of. Overpasses that can hit jumping or kicked combatants.

Vehicles

Big rigs to climb up and run around on. Garbage trucks that you can hack and "dispose" of enemies with. Fuel tankers. Cement trucks, dump trucks, large drones.

Upgrades

The weapons available to civilian cyborgs aren't very good at actually hurting other cyborgs - at least, not directly. Get a shotgun to knock opponents away from a distance, a magnet harpoon to pull them to you, and a hammer to try to smack away incoming attackers. Hack the vehicle you've jumped onto and drive it around. Get longer jumps, or even the ability to run on the pavement at highway speed for short distances.

Enemies

Your opposition has access to much of the same technology you do... But some will have access to massive, abnormal bodies and/or military equipment.

Here's some things I'd like to add, but probably can't at the base level of funding:

I'm not going to specify an order for stretch goals; instead, when the campaign finishes, I'll ask in the backer survey what additional features are most important to everyone. Some of these may delay the project, especially multiplayer and/or 3d.

Risks and challenges

Software development is risky. Some features take longer than expected, some bugs are difficult to root out or end up requiring substantial rewrites to mitigate. Delays are practically expected; I left space in the schedule, but I will notify backers if I find the project behind anyway.

I don't have backup personnel if I fall ill. I do have cloud backup if something happens to my computers. If I find myself unable or unwilling to complete the project, I will issue refunds, and release the source project as far as I got as public domain.

The good news is that I have decades of experience in software development, this project isn't really all that large in scope, and I'm not planning on doing anything I'm not already familiar with in the core product. I'm using the Long Term Support version of Unity to minimize technology surprises and focus on the core fun.

Speaking of "core fun", another risk I'll be monitoring very carefully is the possibility that new features could ruin the fun of the existing game. If an ability is too easy, too powerful, or too boring, I'll want to cut that out right away.
