Ett bordsrollspel som spelas med penna och papper samt regelbok. Händelserna utspelar sig i en urban modern fantasyvärld helt separat från vår. I denna värld är rasfrågor, dold tyranni och religiöst förtryck viktiga spelpunkter. Systemet styrs av personliga drivkrafter.

Spelsystemet Assei
Asseis viktigaste egenskaper är motivationer och stresstålighet. Det är inte dina fysiska egenskaper som styr din prestation utan dina personliga drivkrafter. Din rollpersons prestationer påverkas av stress – när du avviker från dina drivkrafter eller då din omgivning påverkar dig. Spelet bygger på situationslösning i jämförelse med handlingslösning eller konfliktlösning. I grund och botten handlar det om att styra situationen för att uppnå vad du vill.

Kompetensen Strid
Kompetensen Strid

Bilden visar boksidan som beskriver kompetensen Strid. Alla kompetenserna är uppdelade i exempelsituationer anpassade efter dem 6 motivationerna. Utöver att beskriva i vilken situation en motivation styr kompetensen, står det även exempel på hur delvis lyckade slag och helt lyckade slag styr situationen. Alla kompetenser i spelet är lika utförligt beskrivna för att spelare ska kunna börja spela snabbt och för att behålla komplexiteten i systemet utan att försvåra spelandet.

English explanation
The image shows the page for the skill Battle. The page has yet to be translated to english. Skills are divided into 6 sections based on situation examples. The divisions are directly connected to the controlling motivation. They not only describe the situations when Battle can be used but also show what can happen depending on the level of success (partial or total success). All skills are equally described, in the same level of depth. Players can therefore start playing directly without the game having to loose complexity. The page in itself shows that Battle not only makes you able to hurt or kill a person but also can be used to make someone surrender. It also describes that Battle can be used to work as a unit, to protect someone, to capture an opponent or even to convert opponents to your side.

När jag skapade spelsystemet inspirerades jag av en resurssida på nätet som heter Gaming As Women. Det är en samling bloggar med reflektioner om hur kvinnor upplever spel och spelkulturen samt om inkludering och alternativ speldesign. En artikel om de sociologiska observerbara skillnaderna mellan hur pojkar och flickor leker var sporren bakom systemet. Jag har skapat Assei för att olika spelstilar ska behandlas likvärdigt, samtidigt som tärningar har sin betydande roll. Fördelen med mekaniken är att den gynnar spelare som vill spela själviska, precis som att den stödjer hjälpsamma och förstående spelsätt. Kön är en annan aspekt jag har arbetat med för att skapa en ökad inkludering.

The image shows the page about the player’s choice of gender for the character. The page has yet to be translated to english. I chose to describe the different genders in a general manner because gender is a complex notion. Basically, there are three pronouns: she, he and xe. They represent female, male and other genders. Cisgender and transgender persons use the first two and the last pronoun is used the gender is unknown or for genderqueer and androgynous. Another type of gender the page describes is intersexualism such as herm, ferm and merm. There are at least 9 choices of gender in Assei with the possibility of more variations.

Världen Assei
Assei är numer den enda kända delen av världen, den enda överlevande stat i det sista raskriget. Staten består av skyddade städer som är sammankopplade av tunnelbanor och separerade av en död yttre värld. Världen blev förgiftad och förstörd av en ohindrad industri samt skoningslösa raskrig. Assei styrs av en teokrati, en religiös regering. Religionen beskriver hur gudens fyra barn – syskonen – kom till världen och vägledde de fyra raserna ut ur kriget: människorna, alverna, dvärgarna och trollen. Dessa raser, även kallat blodsarven, är de sista kvarvarande folken. Enligt religionen ska raserna hålla sitt blod rent och därmed bo separat för att inte frestas i synd.

Städerna är stora utsträckta byggnader av tegel och betong. De är sammanbyggda och tornar upp sig i höga skyskrapor utan fönster. Av världen utanför ser du bara giftig smog och dimma. Taken är krönta av stora fläkt- och filteranordningar som förser livet innanför väggarna med andningsbar luft. Insidan är uppdelad i sektorer som är segregerade enligt ras; de sammankopplas med multiblodssektorer där raserna relativt motvilligt kan beblanda sig, med varandra. En dag- och nattcykel är simulerad och är baserad på tiden i huvudstaden. Då städerna växer hela tiden, blir gamla delar övergivna när de klassas som oanvändbara. Till dessa slumområden skickas personer som anses vara olämpliga element i staden; de som inte vill eller kan följa religionen. Här ska de olämpliga enligt Asseis medborgare tyna bort i sin egen syndiga sörja. Slummen frodas dock oftast på sitt eget vis, och drivs fritt av kriminella gäng.

Religionen fastsatte inte bara raslagarna utan tillsatte även ett nytt statsskick. Grunden för rättighetssystemet som alla medborgare får ta del av – d.v.s. de som följer statsreligionen – är följande: fri skola, anställning och bostad, varav de två sistnämnda erbjuds av företagen. Ditt yrke bestämmer dina rättigheter – hur mycket mat och andra varor och tjänster du får. Som medborgare kan livet vara bra, men kan du inte anpassa dig skickas du till slummen, där livet är en kamp om mat, territorier och resurser.

I Assei finns det medborgare som lyckas leva utanför lagen samt slumborgare som lever i lyx. Polisen, tillsammans med säkerhetpolisen, försöker hålla ihop samhället från de förstörande influenserna av droger och kätteri. Företagen kämpar för att få större del av kakan genom aggressiv headhunting och industrispionage. Men mitt i denna hårdstyrda stat finns de individer som kämpar för ett friare samhälle. Det är dem som Asseis medborgare kallar för terrorister. Parallellt med frihetskampen utspelas en dold kamp; kampen mot Skuggorna. Samhället förtärs sakta utan varken statens eller rasernas generella vetskap.

English version

Assei is a table top roleplaying game. The story is set in a contemporary urban fantasy world, completely separate from ours. In this world, racial issues, hidden tyranny and religious oppression are significant plot points. The game system is managed by personal motivations.

The Game System of Assei
The main characteristics of Assei’s system of rules are motivation and stress resilience. It's not the physical characteristics that regulate a character’s achievements, but its personal motivations. An avatar’s individual performance is affected by stress, when deviating from its inciting needs or when affected by its environment. The game is situation based compared to being founded on action settlement or conflict resolution. Basically, the goal is to control the situation one’s character is in, in order to achieve what one wants.

When I created the game system I was inspired by a resource page on the web called Gaming as Women; a collection of blogs about how women experience games and gaming culture. Other stimulating topics raised were inclusion and alternative game design. An article about the sociological observable differences between the playing manner of boys and girls was the spur behind my game system. I wanted the different styles of roleplaying rewarded equally: my system favors players who want to play selfish, just as it supports a helpful and sympathetic playing fashion. Regardless of play style, dice have their significant role. Gender is another aspect I have worked with, to create a more inclusive game.

The World of Assei
Assei is nowadays the only known part of the world, the only surviving state in the last racial war. The state consists of protected cities that are interconnected by subways and separated by a dead outer world. The world was poisoned and destroyed by unrestrained industries and ruthless racial war. Assei is controlled by a theocracy, a religious government. Religion describes how God's four children, the Siblings, came into the world and how xe guided men, elves, dwarves and trolls out of the brutal war. These four races, also called the blood heritage, are the last remaining people. Religion states that blood must remain pure; therefore races stay segregated to avoid temptation into sin.

Cities are constructed out of enclosed buildings of brick and concrete. The constructions pile up in tall skyscrapers without windows. The hostile world outside these fortified walls is poisonous, filled with smog and fog. In order to provide breathable air inside the living quarters, large devices with fans and filters are built upon the roofs. The cities are divided into race specific sectors which in turn are connected by multi blood sectors. A day- and night cycle is simulated with artificial lights and time is based on the capital’s time zone. As cities grow, old quarters get abandoned by the time they are classified unusable. Individuals who will not or cannot follow the religion are sent to these derelict slums. According to Assei’s citizens, unwanted elements may just as well languish in their own sinful waste. However, the slum thrives on its own and is freely operated by criminal gangs.

The religious state embedded racial laws and appointed a new government. All citizens, ie, those who follow the state religion, receive benefits such as free school, employment and housing. One’s rights are directly correlated to one’s profession: the higher up the hierarchy one is appointed, the more variation in foods, goods and services one is entitled to. As a citizen of Assei, life can be good but if one cannot adapt, the slums await. There, chances are that life is nothing but struggle for food, territories and resources.

In Assei there are citizens who manage to live outside the law just as there are slum citizens who live in luxury. The police, along with the security police, try to keep away the destructive influences of drugs and heresy. Companies compete for resources through aggressive headhunting and industrial espionage. Amidst this hard-driven state, are those who fight for a free society, those are whom Assei’s citizens call terrorists. In addition to the freedom fight, a hidden conflict is played; the war against the Shadows. The community of Assei as we know it is slowly annihilated without the knowledge of anyone.

Money

The amount gathered from this Kickstarter will mainly go to the production of a first edition - a hard cover book, 200+ pages in A4 format. Part of the funding will also go to professional proofreading, marketing and distribution.

Risks and challenges

The game is complete and about to be proofread. I need about two months to complete the illustrations. As for risks, printing might be delayed a few months.
